Video: Precision Urban Hopper leaps over fences, makes enemies cringe
by Darren Murph posted Sep 15th 2009 at 10:46AM

It's only been a few months since we heard from the whiz kids over at Boston Dynamics, and honestly, we've been waiting on pins and needles to see what miracle would emerge from its labs next. Said outfit has just been awarded a contract by Sandia to build the next generation of the Precision Urban Hopper, which will be a four-wheeled jumping robot that can navigate autonomously.

All I know is that anytime they develop new stuff like this, the first thing I think about is it being used against us.
they test em out in other countries first, but this stuff will come back to haunt us patriots.

Well, that reasoning pretty much put a stop to any weapons development. U.S. first had a nuke, now NK has one. The list goes on.
You can only have near monopoly on huge expensive weapons system such as missile defense or hydrogen bomb, or rail gun.
On the other hand, political imperative these days tend to prohibit the use of mass destruction weapon. We are forced to go into this kind of small scale robot warfare to hunt down the enemy.

Any guesses on how? Magnetic hammer propulsion? If so, can’t imagine it can do this more than a few times on a charge.

I don't know. Maybe it has a magazine which stores a dozen bullet-size charges to give it a kick. I am only speculating.

I’ll bet it’s pretty simple, like a motor that wraps up a spring that can be triggered to release the stored energy all at once. Something like that could do quite a few hops, as long as there was sufficient time in between. It’s also possible it uses a chemical propellant, or even compressed air, but I doubt it..

With a “CRACK” it’s almost instantly on the other side of the fence!
To: bigbob
From its sound, I am guessing it is releasing a cocked spring. There is no “POW” like one would expect from an explosion or release of compressed air.

Individual citizens have *no* chance against the government and haven't for a long time. That's why the "cold dead hands" FReepers are so amusing.

First we got the bomb, and that was good,
'Cause we love peace and motherhood.
Then Russia got the bomb, but that's okay,
'Cause the balance of power's maintained that way.
Who's next?
France got the bomb, but don't you grieve,
'Cause they're on our side (I believe).
China got the bomb, but have no fears,
They can't wipe us out for at least five years.
Who's next?
Then Indonesia claimed that they
Were gonna get one any day.
South Africa wants two, that's right:
One for the black and one for the white.
Who's next?
Egypt's gonna get one too,
Just to use on you know who.
So Israel's getting tense.
Wants one in self defense.
"The Lord's our shepherd," says the psalm,
But just in case, we better get a bomb.
Who's next?
Luxembourg is next to go,
And (who knows?) maybe Monaco.
We'll try to stay serene and calm
When Alabama gets the bomb.
Who's next?
Who's next?
Who's next?
Who's next?

If a few million individuals were coordinated to act at a particular time, no totalitarian regime could resist them. Communications and coordination is the key. How to keep those lines open is the question.

I think my nephew had one like that about 10 years ago, but it was plastic, probably made in China. :)

It is super cool.
It could be dropped from a drone and hide while surreptitiously soaking up and transmitting all sorts of stuff.

Totally agree. Does anyone have the antidote or countermeasure for a Precision Urban Hopper yet?
Reminds me of that movie with Stallone and was it Gene Simmons?
