GW Bush: "There is no [conservative] movement...I redefined the Republican Party"
Washington Examiner ^ | September 15, 2009 | Byron York

Posted on 09/16/2009 12:10:22 PM PDT by TBP

Bush was preparing to give a speech to the annual meeting of the Conservative Political Action Conference, or CPAC. The conference is the event of the year for conservative activists; Republican politicians are required to appear and offer their praise of the conservative movement.

Latimer got the assignment to write Bush's speech. Draft in hand, he and a few other writers met with the president in the Oval Office. Bush was decidedly unenthusiastic.

"What is this movement you keep talking about in the speech?" the president asked Latimer.

Latimer explained that he meant the conservative movement -- the movement that gave rise to groups like CPAC.

"Let me tell you something," the president said. "I whupped Gary Bauer's ass in 2000. So take out all this movement stuff. There is no movement."

Apparently, Dubya didn't see what happened this past Saturday in DC and 45 states. (BT, what happened to the other 12 states?)

The Republican Party long ago ceased to be any kind of effective vehicle for advancing conservatism.

Do you remember when Ed Gillespie (then RNC chairman) said there was no place in the party for limited government types?

http://www.podiumpundits.com/2009/09/16/the-speechwriter-as-gossipmonger/

.....one of the most warmed-over clichés about the Bush Administration: “[Chris Michel] was usually chipper, though at the moment his face was so pale he must have been the whitest man in the Bush White House. And that was no small accomplishment.”

Yowza! Republicans are white and out of touch. That’s fresh.

But wait, there’s more in that vein. Describing a previous job on Capitol Hill, Latimer writes: “I was assigned to coach Republican senators on how to reach out to the media and entertainment world. (You try explaining The View to a group of 65-year-old white Republican men.)”

Hah – ‘cause they’re white and men and old – they probably smell like Ben-Gay. And they’re clueless. White men are incapable of understanding four women who sit around a table and talk to each other on TV.

Yes, he did redefine the Republican Party.

However not for the better. As evidenced by the choice of McCain as the Standard Bearer.

Others in the mix were lost because of rule changes by Nat’l GOP Party leaders and by the go-along-get-along MSM.

End result: a screwing of the American people.

Yes, ‘We the People’ got screwed!

Latimer loves Obama....as he said in the WP recently:

“Obama is smarter than this. On the campaign trail, his speeches, in clear, coherent English...... Even some of us in the Bush White House studied Obama’s speeches and marveled at their grace.”

GW is. The quote is from two years ago. This is a hit piece designed to sow dissention between conservatives who want to turn the GOP back to Reagan-style conservatism and conservatives who want to dump the GOP as a lost cause. (I could go either way. Both sides have good points, but now is NOT the time for dissension among conservatives. This question will answer itself, or rather the GOP will by how it acts in the coming months.)

Look at how the two parties vote on every issue. Remove the Rino’s vote, and it’s the Republicans taking the directly opposite position against the whacked out Democrats every time. There IS a difference. This country is a Republic, you know.

Spot On.

And when you remind them that Bush gave us "No Child Left Behind" or that Bush gave us the "750 Billion Dollar Medicare Part D," they find some excuse for Bush.

And of course there was that time when Bush pushed the Amnesty Bill.

However, there is some good news, Dubya is going to dress up as a Conservative for Halloween.

Tax cuts and defending the nation (at last!!!) against Islamofascists was a good start for the Bush Administration. Sadly, the remainder of his administration was largely disappointing and clearly NOT conservative.

He and the Republican congress spent like drunken sailors (no offense to drunken sailors) which was a major reason they lost in 2006 and 2008.

Check out The National Debt Road Trip 2:46 video, to see a graphic representation of Big Government Republicans.

But for Ronald Reagan and his conservative movement, GW and his father (and his brother in Florida) could have been elected to nothing. They would have been limited to the occasional small potatoes political appointee appartatchiks as GB Senior had been under Gerry Ford and Nixon (remember, his only elective office had been as a congressman in a safe Houston district). The biggest mistake Ronaldus Magnus made was to elevate this family by choosing someone who stood for nothing as his Vice President.

That’s a non sequitur if I have ever seen one! Bauer may well have been a poor politician. Privately, Bauer probably wishes that GHWB had whupped Dubya’s ass more. The “conservative movement” in 2008, with the pitiful choices forced on us by the dysfunctional GOP primary system, was to sit home on the couch while a racist phony friend of domestic terrorists was elected to the “throne.”

Don't take the word of the speech writer, but instead look at the actions of George W. Bush.

Signed and pushed for No Child Left Behind

Signed and pushed for the 750 Billion Dollar Medicare Part D

Pushed for Amnesty for Illegal Aliens.

So no, I do not need Bush speech writer to tell me that Bush was not aligned with Conservatives.
