Perhaps you are thinking of him more in office than when campaigning for the Presidency? He was already a nuanced politician, but he was unapologetic about his belief in America and first American principles—despite the scorn and derision from within and beyond his party.
And you’re right, he didn’t attack individual politicians and he abided by his 11th Amendment, or whatever he called it, about not criticizing other Republicans. Too many Red State Freepers are ready to charge, pitchfork-first at the RINOs in the Blue and Purple States—but that’s no way to build a majority.

Compromise is a two-way street. So far, all I have seen is RINOs wanting to compromise with leftists and telling conservatives to shove it while expecting conservatives to cough up cash.
In fact, that's the biggest problem with the GOP.

Remember the meme that circulated before the meltdown that McCain might win the pop. vote and lose in the EC and/or if 0bama lost it was due to racism? He had a puncher’s chance, but the mega-trends were against him.
Well, I think what Rush says is usually true.
But the next few years will mark a major test for the Republican party. If they pull their act together, stand up for values that the conservative coalition supports, and choose a good candidate, fine.
But if they pick another loser—Romney, for instance—and continue to bash and reject people like Sarah Palin, then this may be the exception to the rule.
If you were really watching when Ross Perot ran, he was not really a conservative. He got a very substantial vote for a third-party candidate, but he did NOT really stand for conservative principles.
As I’ve said before, there have been times in our history when parties have just gotten old and worn out. Then they die, and a new party takes their place. That happens just about every 150 years or so. So it’s not a common event. But it could be what we are seeing. The RNC is hopeless. The Republican leadership is hopeless. The Republican gurus are hopeless—except for a few of them.
So, if the party rejects Sarah Palin next time around, and choose Mitt Romney instead, then I will seriously consider going with Palin. I’m going to wait and see. But it’s at least a possibility that this time will be different, and third party will be the way to go.
I’m not arguing with Rush about this. Of course we don’t want another Ron Paul or Ross Perot, or the kind of third party candidates we’ve had in our lifetime. But let’s just see what happens.

The essence of conservatism is to realize that ALL politics is a matter of “holding my nose” FOREVER.
Conservatism is a DEMANDING ideology. It is based on the fundamental fact - and acceptance of the fact - of human imperfection and fallibility. That is easy to say, but consider that the implications of that are grim.
Conservatives must therefore carry on IN SPITE OF the acknowledged certainty of disappointment, in spite of hopelessness, in spite of demoralization. We cannot tell ourselves fairy tales about the future, we cannot legitimately get lost in rhetoric, we cannot, truly, even dare to hope. But still we need to carry on.
THAT is Conservatism.

If conservatives can’t even beat RINOs in a Republican primary, then they have no hope of defeating Democrats in a general election under a 3rd party.
The way we break the cycle is to get involved in shaping the Republican party. Take on the party machine that props up RINOs, and let them know they are in our sights.
We should be targeting Cornyn for his work as the chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee in supporting the primary campaigns of Arlen Specter and Charlie Crist over credible conservative challengers.
We need to start there, telling the RNC that taking sides and working to defeat conservative challengers to the Status Quo in a Republican primary is a despicable practice that must end immediately.
Republican primaries are when the voters decide what kind of party they want the GOP to be. The party elites have no place trying to manipulate that.
Third parties are there because the Republicans are corrupt and offering candidates the Conservatives will *not* vote for.

It took me until post 24 to find the thread...
Nevertheless, I hope that those in the republican party that maintain conservative values (such as Jim DeMint, Sarah Palin, and a few others) do some serious housecleaning. The party became democrat-lite several years ago and the cumulative result was loss of the house, Senate, and finally, the Presidency.
The issue at stake here is that it's our America. The path to restoring the republic doesn't have to involve the republican party, but I don't think that a third party will be effective in any major election at this juncture.
It’s not an either-or thing. Rush is right, but we don’t have to put up another McCain. I say look to the example of Reagan in 1980. He beat the RINOs in the party by taking his small-government, pro-American republic message directly to the American people and building a majority with that.He didn’t stomp out of the Party in a hissy fit or spend his time trying to defeat the milquetoast Pubbies in office. He simply and unapologetically, made his plain-spoken case to the American people.
That’s what we need to do and support candidates in doing, and all of this Democrats and Republicans are morally relatively equivalent is dangerous hogwash. A third-party would be a killer to this country right now, because it would cement the Marxists in power.

Why would she do that, and split the Republican vote and end up losing? We have an approximately 50/50 country. You split any one side of the votes and the other side wins.
Last year, I was furious with any libertarians, conservatives, or even moderates that refused to vote or voted third party due to their disgust with the GOP... last year, facing the election of a nutty, low-intellect Marxist, was not the time to entertain a third party.
Today, it is high time. Rush - a faux conservative who tried to foist the likes of Mitt Romney on conservatives - is in no position to warn us. He isn't keeping this conservative on the plantation. No way, no how, no more. No more betrayals.
