Congress Getting Ready to Move on Iran Sanctions
Weekly Standard ^ | Sept. 12, 2009

Posted on 09/12/2009 4:08:34 PM PDT by nuconvert

The Jerusalem Post reports that Congress is gearing up to move ahead with new sanctions on Iran in the event that the Iranians do not offer a serious response to the Obama administration's diplomatic overtures. And the Iranians have not offered a serious response to the Obama administration's outreach, offering instead an absurd program for talks on full of lefty talking points about environmental issues but nothing about the country's nuclear program. The Obama administration has accepted this Iranian offer. As one Hill staffer put it to me in an email today, "The Iranians just spit into the face of the international community, and the Obama administration’s response is to try to persuade us that it’s raining."

As the JPost makes clear, the Obama administration is going to have a hard time selling this kind of engagement on the Hill. The paper quotes Rep. Howard Berman, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee: "I said that I did not intend to immediately move it through the legislative process. I wanted - and still want - to give the administration's efforts to engage Iran every possible chance to succeed, within a reasonable time frame." And then an unnamed Senate aide:

He pointed out that either the administration would become a driving force for some measures against Teheran, or Congress would take matters into its own hands.

"It's going to be very hard after the deadline if nothing has happened for the administration to say, 'Do nothing, just give us more time,'" he said.

Obama has caved in to North Korean demands for bilateral talks and got absolutely nothing in return. Obama has given up U.S. missile defense sites in Eastern Europe and gotten less than nothing in return from Russia -- this week the Russians balked at imposing new sanctions on Iran, the oft-promised quid for the administration's "reset" in U.S.-Russia relations. And that's just in the last week. Given Obama's early record of appeasing America's enemies and antagonizing America's allies -- either deliberately or through sheer incompetence -- it's hard to imagine that Obama doesn't, on Iran's behalf, plead with members of Congress from both parties for more time...even when it's become perfectly obvious that the Iranians are simply stalling and have no intention of seriously engaging on the nuclear question.

Let's hope that Democrats in Congress like Lieberman and Berman are serious about holding this administration's feet to the fire because it's fast becoming clear that the administration is not at all serious about holding the Iranian's to account for their ruthless suppression of any and all domestic dissent, their brazen disregard for the international non-proliferation regime, or their continued support for insurgent groups waging war on U.S. troops.

Classic, just classic.

well you know if IDF hits Iran, oil prices will go sky high,
much higher than we’ve seen before.
As for world recession?
How about world severe depression.
Course ya know how to get out of a depression don’t ya? War.

Why don’t the Iranian dictators just sign a paper saying “We promise to be good”. Nancy Pelosi, the Neville Chamberlain of our times, can then wave the paper in front of an adoring media.

Obama has a perception problem and a reality problem when it comes to geopolitical issues, and both — the perception and reality — is that he is a weak, ineffectual, semi-legitimate (half the country don’t accept him) in over his head president. They smell blood in the water — that is America’s — and they’re goin’ for the kill! Therefore they will NEVER do anyting to help this president. It’s not personal; it’s political and their aim is to cut America down to size.

Iran..”Mess with us and we will close the Persion Gulf and give you $200 oil, rain vast destruction on US bases, destroy Israel, kick the US out of the Middle East, excite Muslims to worldwide Jihad, conquer South America, Europe and Africa, and even more that you can only imagine in your wildest, nightmarish dreams”,

AND, “Remember, the Mahdi is coming”.

Obama...”Ok. Can we talk some more? There is SO MUCH more that moving lips can convey!”

diplomacy
failure

What do these three word have in common?

The Russians and North Koreans are busting a gut laughing at the total fool in the White House. Why? Because he’s a wimp, a complete pushover. They are kicking sand in the face of the ninety pound weakling.

The Iranians just spit into the face of the international community,

And the White House is 'deeply concerned'.

"The Iranians just spit into the face of the international community,...

Few things I find more satisfying than someone spitting in the face of the "International Community". Note to congress...If you want to stop the Iranian crazies from nuking the USA or her allies then do so. If you want to get the Iranians because they had the audacity to spit in the face of the international community, too bad I won't support that.

and they’re goin’ for the kill! Therefore they will NEVER do anyting to help this president. ------------------- Can't say I blame them. They are looking out for their interests as leaders are supposed to. Obama has no attachment to his country and is looking out for himself. He's finding it more and more difficult to vote "present" as President of the United States. His naive world view is evident. He's out of his league and thinks non stop campaigning is leadership.
