MIAMI It may be tempting the weather gods just to point this out, but this has been a dud of a hurricane season so far.
Only two hurricanes have formed in the Atlantic over the past three months, and neither hit the U.S. a somewhat unusual lull.
"I'm glad that I didn't have to go out and get anything yet," said Lissette Galiana, who was shopping at a Wal-Mart in suburban Miami on Friday, around what is usually the very peak of the Atlantic hurricane season. "There's always a chance."
Forecasters attribute the calm to a weak El Nino, the periodic warming of the central Pacific Ocean. It is producing strong upper-level winds out of the west that are shearing off the tops of thunderstorm clouds that can develop into hurricanes.

Mild El Nino continues, strengthening expected

WASHINGTON A weak El Nino is under way and it is expected to strengthen and last through winter, government climate researchers said Thursday.
The periodic climate phenomenon is marked by warming of the central Pacific Ocean and changes in wind direction and air pressure that can affect weather around the world.
The presence of an El Nino can help to suppress Atlantic hurricane activity by increasing the vertical wind shear over the Caribbean Sea and tropical Atlantic Ocean. ..
Global Cooling (our actual condition) lowers the water temperature of the ocean, depriving tropical storms from the energy needed to become hurricanes.
Now they gone and jinks us...
Please don’t tempt the weather gods.
From Houston
The drama queens at the Weather Channel are deeply saddened.
It is?
Oh LOOK, a squirrel, (hey, where's my wallet)
After Hurricane Katrina, the global warming cultists told us we would experience more, and more destructive hurricanes from then forward. Since, there have been no destructive hurricanes to hit the US, and only few that did damage in the Caribbean and Mexico.
Well we aren’t out of the woods or maybe the winds as of yet. For the United States, September has had more major hurricanes than all other months combined. When we get to the end of Sept and a couple of good northers blowing through to cool the Gulf/Atlantic waters then maybe we can breathe easier. Until then those along the sea shores can’t really relax.
Since, there have been no destructive hurricanes to hit the US, and only few that did damage in the Caribbean and Mexico.
I suspect those that experienced Rita, Sept. 28, 2005 and Ike, Sept, 13, 2008 would tend to disagree.
I mean to say since that year (2005). But I did forget about Ike. Still there has been one in three years, whereas we were having two or three per year for several years until 2005.
What about Hurricane Gustav, which hit the Gulf Coast at the time of the Republican convention in Aug. 2008? Where did it make landfall? Was it a small storm?
I remember the liberals/Democrats were happy to see a hurricane coming then, as they hoped it would upset the news coverage and events of the Republican convention.
You just can’t seem to be able to predict the weather. Who’d a thunk?
Due to the Obama Presidency....just wait, someone will pick up on this.
It ain’t over yet....
No sunspots, no summer temperatures, no hurricanes...
The east coast has seen surf the last 3 weekends. This weekend shapes up well also in rhe MIDLANT region.
“Since, there have been no destructive hurricanes to hit the US, “
I must have dreamed IKE, then.
Thank God for those of us who have loved ones living along the coastlines.
This is impossible because Global Warming causes more and worse hurricanes.
Ask AlGore.
The mainstream media is deeply saddened...
Gustav was one that was very destructive in the Caribbean, but weakened when it hit the US. This is from Wikipedia, but I didn't see any other summary information after a quick Google:
Once into the Gulf, Gustav gradually weakened because of increased wind shear and dry air. It weakened to a Category 2 hurricane late on August 31, and remained at that intensity until landfall on the morning of September 1 near Cocodrie, Louisiana.[5] Weakening continued, and Gustav weakened to a tropical storm that evening and to a tropical depression the next day as it meandered around the south-central US. The weak system became extratropical on September 4 and was absorbed by another low on September 5.
Ike last year was a horror for Texas and we had to evacuate, what a pain, from New Orleans for Gustave which thankfully fizzled out without doing us too much damage.
Dud hurricane season!
Only two hurricanes formed, neither hit U.S.Women, Poor and Minorities Hardest Hit!
They'd also say this lack of Hurricanes somehow proves 'globular warming' (sic), morons.
