PHOENIX (BNO NEWS) — Two small planes collided in midair near Coolidge, Arizona on Wednesday morning, officials told BNO News.

“We believe that a single-engine Cessna 150 and a single-engine Piper Cherokee collided in midair above Cooldige around 9.45 a.m. Wednesday,” said Ian Gregor, a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Coolidge is a small city in Pinal County, about 56 miles southeast of Phoenix.

The planes, which were both carrying two people, came down about 1 to 2 miles from each other. The Cessna crashed near the intersection of Coolidge and Jefferson. One person on board was killed in the crash, while a second was airlifted to a local hospital.

The Piper landed safely in a field about 1 to 2 miles northeast of where the Cessna crashed. No one on board, or on the ground, was injured.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are en-route to investigate the crash.

Hmmm...I was guessing a crop-duster...that area is chock-full of cotton and other farms.

Prayers up for all involved.

Crop dusters rarely carry 2 people which I have seen. They need all the weight capacity for carrying their load which they are applying to the crops.

At this time of year, the crop dusters would be spraying a defoliant prior to the harvesting of the cotton by the combines.

Uh, no...

“Coolidge is 56 miles southeast of Phoenix, and 69 miles northwest of Tucson.”

LOL. What is the mileage cutoff for being able to use the word near?

You’re real close to my son, then...!

I think we all know that you simply cannot ‘place’ most small towns in Arizona without correlating their location to Phoenix or Tucson. Or Tombstone, believe it or not. Sierra Vista, the 4th or 5th largest city (not counting Phx and Tuc suburbs) in Arizona. But you have to say we’re near Tombstone for many folks to figure out our location.

For me it’s Tucson, Phoeniz, Flagstaff, and my personal fav ... Winslow.

Have stayed at the new/old La Posada there a few times. the first time there were only 4 rooms open, no restaurant so we had to eat at the diner in the airport.

Yes, we all stood on a corner.

Right you are. I had the crop-duster thought before reading the updated article. I was up there on Friday and Monday, and noticed a lot of crop-dusting activity.

Winslow now has an annual festival to commemorate the song. They highlighted that in last month’s issue of Arizona Highways.

It’s been maybe 5 years since my last visit. On a corner, at the time, they had a bronze Jackson Browne-like statue on the main drag. I understand a fire required the removal, maybe it’s back.

I guess the festival is why the David Nelson band played Winslow a while back. Couldn’t figure out why they would go there, given that there ain’t much going on in Winslow.
