WASHINGTON (AFP) – The United States wants to enlist its 3.4 million Girl Scouts in the effort to combat hurricanes, pandemics, terror attacks and other disasters.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) launched a campaign Tuesday to entice the blue, brown and green-clad multitudes to be even more prepared, with the promise of a new patch if they pitch in.
The young scouts will be able to emblazon their sashes or vests with the patch if they undergo the training which readies them for an emergency.
"This new preparedness patch will increase citizen preparedness and enhance our country's readiness for disasters," said DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano in a statement.
"As a former Girl Scout, I know the 'Be Prepared' motto well, and I look forward to working with the Girl Scouts to spread the preparedness message to all of our nation's citizens."
The move is part of a month-long government effort to make Americans better able to cope with natural and man-made disasters.
Napolitano has urged individuals, families and businesses to stock fresh water and food, and prepare an emergency plan -- to be enacted in the event of a disaster.
The unveiling of the patch marks a partnership between the scouts and Citizen Corps, a community-based initiative under the DHS's Federal Emergency Management Agency, which coordinates national response to disasters.
Girl Scouts of the USA chief executive Kathy Cloninger said the tie up with Citizen Corps "provides an opportunity for our girls to lead the way in ensuring that their families and their communities are prepared for emergencies."

when my daiughter was in teh GSA, she was asked to do a prese4ntation on a female role model and hero. the choices they gave were all atheletes, singers, or political left wingers. When she asked to do Margaret Thatcher, the leader balked and gave the kid a hard time, until I had a little talk. the kid did Maggie, and a lot of folks were impressed, but she eventually got fed up with teh BS and concentrated on Rainbow.
Under normal circumstances, I’d probably not be bothered by this.
But, given the times, this has uncomfortable echoes of the Young Pioneers or some other youth indoctrination group.
Plus, there’s just something putrid, about Janet Napolitano having anything to do with young girls. That is just disturbing.

Concur! My daughter dropped out last year after we both were very disgruntled at the national GSA support of very liberal policies, including lesbian leaders. She’s no longer in scouting of any kind, but agree w/ you that American Heritage is THE new scouting event for girls. Encourage parents to steer their daughters there instead of GSA.
Somehow the Boy Scouts have been able to withstand the onslaught, but not without lots of slander and malicious attacks.

I know the Boy Scouts don’t allow gay scoutmasters; I guess the Girl Scouts don’t have such qualms.
Ohhh, but try to be a straight father of 3 (ages 10 to 17)girl scouts. The amount of background checks that I had to go through was mind numbing to say the least. And I am a certified high school teacher, of course they won’t use those background checks. Our troop leader and I take the older girls on camping trips, high adventure trails, caving expeditions, rock climbing and white water rafting trips over the summer - then to a huge trip every other year, usually overseas if they have raised enough money.
The looks I get from other leaders comes in two flavors: the one I get most is of distain that why is a man is allowed to be a GS leader, the other is of the thought that it is way cool that a dad would take the time to be a GS leader. The career/working moms are the ones the love it - go figure, I thought it would be just the opposite. And don’t even get me started when I have to go to the GS store at the council office.

Juniors work for it and it’s a big deal. My girls slaved for hours at a food bank that I drove them to. It was not easy work and took much of all of our time. Guess who got kudos for their “Bronze Award”?

I had four boys—no girls. Boy Scouts Troops stayed clear of politics, but always affirmed their belief in God.

I have no problem with Girl Scouts being trained in Emergency Preparedness but don’t like the idea of a government sponsored patch. What’s next? Support Obama by spying on your parents patch?
Boy Scouts must earn the E-Prep merit badge as a required badge for Eagle. It was a valuable thing for my son to do.
Radical lesbians took over our local girl scouts some time ago.
Mrs. TTR and I brought our girls in, saw them, red their propganda (with all the key words), and left in about 15 minutes.

In our area, I believe being a rug rubber is mandatory.
I was a Missionette. And my younger sister was a Joy Belle.
I would recommend the book “Eighth Moon” by San San and Bette Lord. It is the story of a girl growing up in China during the Great Leap Forward. Alot of the story reminds me of what’s beginning to happen here with the indoctrination of school children. The similarities are scary.

Why not the Boy Scouts?
For emergency preparations, all, not just the Scouts, can check the following:
1. Emergency supplies and suppliers are all over the Internet.
2.Very inexpensive canned foods are available at LDS “Bishop’s Warehouses” (I hope I remembered the name correctly) AND non_LDS can purchase there.
3. Take a tip from the Navajho - they keep 5 years of food stored away.
4. BLOAT, BLOAT, BLOAT! Buy Lots Of Ammo Today.
I believe that Obama wanted to start with ‘young male recruits in their late teens, early twenties’ for his own militia but knew there would be suspicion. So, START with little girls, then little boys, then older girls, then older boys and when you get to paramilitary young men you can say “are you afraid of the GIRL SCOUTS TOO!!!!?”
