Frederick County should secede from Maryland
The Frederick News-Post ^ | Sept 9, 2009 | Meg Tully

In a classic feat of showmanship, a Frederick County commissioner brought attention to local budget problems by declaring that the county should secede and become its own state.

Commissioner John L. Thompson Jr. persuaded his fellow board members Tuesday to ask the county's financial staff for a study of how much of residents' state taxes are returned, but the board fell short of passing a secession resolution.

Secession talk in Maryland. Thompson is a local gadfly, but his maneuver succeeded in getting the local commissioners to endorse a study of local tax revenues and the percentage returned to the citizens.

This prompted me to wonder: Of what use is a state government in the new paradigm, anyway? Great gobs of tax dollars go straight to the feds, who then regulate citizens (and their local governments) directly. Occasionally they throw some "stimulus" money in our direction to keep us quiet. But (at least here in Maryland) the state has an increasingly insignificant role.

Here in Maryland, we generally send about 5% of our income to the state government. It's never seen again. The money goes to fund welfare queens in Baltimore, and crowds of useless bureaucrats in Annapolis. But, as the state rarely returns money to it's citizens, we have little incentive to respect their authority or to pay their taxes.

As the over-reaching Federal Government expands, aren't they marginalizing lower governments and possibly rendering them irrelevant?

The I-95 corridor rules the state. I would welcome a 51’st state personally.

The Eastern Shore should go too. Leave PG, Monkey, and Howeird counties and Balmer as the “Axis of Weasels”.

Yep, make it part of Delaware — and eventually get two more Republican U.S. Senators from the deal!

I was thinking more of turning Delaware into a toxic waste site, and using those pesky Virginians down south as cheap labor. ;)

would you consider joining us in Pennsylvania? We can always use a few more State Senators from Red Counties to hold of Fast Eddie and the Democraps in Harrisburg

Eastern Shore has already threatened this years ago.

As for Frederick - bwahah? Maybe they can secede before it’s too late - which I thought it was. 270 has carted lots of those Monty Co liberals to Frederick to start ruining it, as liberals ruin everything because they want it both ways (Taxes for Thee but not for Me).

What about poor little Western MD (and I mean poor in the poverty sense). Personally, and I hate to say this, I think we’re better off joining West Virginia (by we, I mean Garrett and Allegany counties).
