New Concealed Handgun Laws (TX)
Midland, TX News 9 Website ^ | September 1, 2009

Posted on 09/07/2009 6:43:13 PM PDT by Still Thinking

This year's legislative session made several changes regarding concealed handgun licenses.

House Bill 2730 and House Bill 2664 concern CHL policies and the authority of DPS to enforce those policies.

As of today, defaulting on a student loan no longer disqualifies a concealed handgun applicant and a Justice of the Peace can no longer confiscate your conceal-and-carry permit if you refuse to display it while you are not in possession of the weapon.

And the eyes of the law are a little more tolerant concerning carrying a firearm in public places.

Previously, carrying a firearm into a business that derives more than fifty percent of its revenue from alcohol sales was a third-degree felony.

Now the same violation is considered a class A misdemeanor, and is legally defensible if the establishment does not clearly post their alcohol revenue percentage.

To read more complete analyses of those bills, follow the links below.

Oregon has no such restriction, and I can't remember the last time there was a shooting at a bar or restaurant. Liberals. . . .

Now if they can do something about lowering the price of the card. A piece of plastic shouldn’t cost that much.

And if there’d ever be a time you’d want to shoot someone in a bar or restaurant, it be so much more likely if they were a liberal, and Oregon is full of ‘em, so if it’s safe there...

I am 64 and long retired, the only thing stopping me from moving to Texas is my wife loves her job and makes a ton of money. We have enough, she could retire too, she just doesn’t want to. I am between the proverbial rock and hard place.

I currently live in Illinois, where it is illegal to think about guns.

Living in a college town in Texas, this conversation between several college students (my daughter included) was recently overheard:

My daughter - “I can’t wait to turn 21!”
Friend - “I know, me too! We should go together!”
Other friend - “To Harry’s for a drink?”
Daughter- “No! Concealed carry classes!”

Channel 9 is notorious around our house for screwing up the news. Even worse on second amendment issues.

“a Justice of the Peace can no longer confiscate your conceal-and-carry permit if you refuse to display it while you are not in possession of the weapon.”

False, A J.P. never could take your license for not displaying when not carrying.

Not displaying the license when asked for ID while carrying was could result in having a license suspended. Revoked on a further offense. That has been changed to a misdemeanor with no penalty for a first offense.

The reason is to be more inline with our “car carry” Motorist Protection Act, where any law abiding person can carry concealed in their vehicle with no license, and no requirement to notify an officer of a gun if their is an ID request.

There is really good wild pig hunting in Texas. Many ranchers consider them a pest.

Couldn't ameliorate the situation by taking some long hunting trips to Texas and bringing back some awesome pork for barbecues?

Those restrictions were concessions to the anti-gun hysterics claiming blood would 'run in the streets' if the CCW bill passed.

Fourteen years of lawful CCW have debunked all that crap, and the restrictions are loosening up.

"I always hear how great Texas’s gun laws are but Colorado doesn’t have any of those restrictions."

You can say that again! Talk about a bunch of nonsense, with all those restrictions you would think the IRS wrote the gun laws down there.

Thanks to states like Florida and Texas paving the way, newer CCW states like here in MN have passed laws with very minimal restrictions.

Next step is national reciprocity of all CCW licenses then the ultimate goal of following Vermont and Alaska and get rid of this need to have a permit to exercise a right in the first place!

Previously, carrying a firearm into a business that derives more than fifty percent of its revenue from alcohol sales was a third-degree felony.

I think that the law reads more than 50% of its revenue comes from alcohol "consumed" on its premises. Thus a package liquor store would be okay but a bar would not. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

51 percent. Thus 51 signs at hospitals an bars etc are posted. I think the 51 signs at hospitals are BS. They ought to be a standard 30:06 No Gun sign or start serving beer an branch water.

My opinion.....

They already do. Technically, you often have to get a permit for a protest public assembly. When we did the McKenney FReep back in 2002, I had no intention of getting one, but one of the other organizers went and got one.

I attempted to get statistics of people in PA who had a CCW (LTCF here) and who committed crimes, and emailed the state office for the info. I was informed that they do not collect this information.

What does that tell you if the data is not even collected? CCW holders are the most law-abiding citizens in the country.

IMO, any legislator who votes to curtail 2A rights should have their armed protection rescinded.

Only makes sense.....and if they complain, ask them why they are making a fuss?

I drove to Johnson City this weekend from Houston, a trip of a few hundred miles. I took a handgun. It was a good feeling knowing it was close by in case of emergency.

I do not have a CCW, but the law allows carry in a vehicle now. It's a great feeling knowing that I have the means to defend my loved ones (and brother in law who I do not love but who I am related to by technicality ) if necessary.

I am never moving back to California; sorry Dad.

My in-laws live outside of town a few miles north, and I only went into town proper once or twice to get beer, but my take on it is that there's a lot of uneducated, unschooled, semi-literate neanderthals who speak an unknown language. And that's the native citizens; the Mexicans are all that and overtly hostile to boot!

We took the family to the nearby Pedernales River. It was a State Park, and you had to pay $5 a head to get in, but that did not deter to scummy people; lots and lots and lots of illegal aliens, and the high point was when an illegal alien breast fed her too-old child in plain view. I saw about a yard and a half of boob, and for once in my life it was not a welcome sight. I guess I've matured. Also, they littered a lot, as if they knew someone would come after them and clean up.

But to answer your question: My brother in law lives there, so I can confirm there is at least one dick in that town.

I do not know the original name, but I think it was renamed Johnson City because LBJ originated from there.

The landscapes are awesome and beautiful. Lots of hills, which I lack in Houston.

They ARE a pest. A herd can root up several acres of good grazing land in just one night. The destruction has to be seen to be believed.

Because they are natural born theives. Visit Mexico sometime and you’ll see that all homes except for the rudest grass huts have bars on the windows. Hmmm...I wonder why?
