FORT HOOD Under a searing sun, breathing clouds of dirt and gulping metallic-tasting water, some of the nations best defense geeks tried to impress the infantrymen and tankers of the U.S. Army.
They converged on a remote part of Fort Hood last week with robots that responded to voices, giant trucks that didnt need a driver, three-dimensional light and range detectors, unmanned track vehicles with machine guns, all of it for an event billed as Texas certainly the Armys first Robotics Rodeo.

The first of the “termanitors”? I wonder.......
There are humans controlling these things behind the scenes. Since they will have lost any ability to fight, attack them. Skirt around the robots and find the humans. They won’t be far away and they won’t be able to fight. Kill them, take their toys, and turn their toys against them.
People who think we can replace our live pilots with drones are also delusional.
“There are humans controlling these things behind the scenes.”
For now. Fairly soon (before 2025), there will be autonomous similar robots, including autonomous fighter aircraft. They’ll operate at the “order” level. (Proceed to coordinate x, y. Interdict enemy aircraft within a twenty mile radius.)
“Since they will have lost any ability to fight,”
Hmmm, better check out how the Marines, for instance, work. Every soldier a rifleman.
“attack them. Skirt around the robots and find the humans. They wont be far away”
Easily up to 300 miles. That’s quite a tactical advantage. There’s also nothing saying you can’t mix and match, say put robots on point and hold the humans in reserve for after contact. This will marry nicely with overall sensor fusion and small UAVs.
Robots have three key advantages. Instant training (even if autonomous), they don’t take 18 years to manufacture, and they are truly expendable.
“better check out how the Marines, for instance, work. Every soldier a rifleman.”
That’s more hype than reality.
In reality the Basic Marine throughout their career is required to hit a target from 500 yards or meters away without a scope no matter what their sex is.
That’s not hype.
Shooting at a controlled firearms range does not equate to a warrior. My wife can hit a 1,000 target but she’s no warrior. The Marines have become every bit as PC as any other branch of service.
Does your wife use a scope at 1000 yards?
We were talking about what makes someone a rifleman not a warrior.
By any definition the ability to hit a man sized target at that range with a kill shot is the mark of a rifleman, but there is more to it than that, all Marines are trained in combat techniques such as throwing a grenade, hand to hand combat and bayonet practise. If the ability to kill using different methods is the mark of a warrior, All Marines receive the same training, and in this PC world of ours that training has if anything become more realistic than when I went through boot camp.
