Gingrich: Obama student speech "good for America"
Politico ^ | 9/6/09 | Carrie Buttoff

Posted on 09/06/2009 9:29:19 PM PDT by pissant

Two top Republicans sided Sunday with President Barack Obama on his scheduled speech Tuesday to school children.

“I have been in communication with Arne Duncan and the team at Department of Education,” former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said on "Fox News Sunday." “I believe this is going to be posted. People are going to see it in advance. It is going be a totally positive speech. If that is what it is, it is good to have the president of the United States saying to young people across America stay in school and do your homework. It’s good for America.”

Senate Republican Conference Chairman Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, a former education secretary under President George H.W. Bush, said: “Of course, the president of the United States should be able to address students.”

Parents and teachers should be able to choose whether to show the speech, Alexander said. But it is a good opportunity to give students a civics lessons, he said, and teachers should embrace the moment by showing clips of other presidents.

If that is what it is, it is good to have the president of the United States saying to young people across America stay in school and do your homework.

Fine by me, as long as it's understood the first draft was "turn in your parents if they don't agree with my health care plan".

Just because Obama gives an innocuous speech, don't assume that he would have given the same speech without all the right wing ranting.

Actually, you should consider the reality of the situation.

Of the each 100 kids who do get forced into the room to watch....at least thirty are doped up, drunk or half-asleep from being up at 1AM.

Three will be pregnant girls sitting there and worrying about how to explain to Mom about their situation.

Eight will be anti-authority geeks who will challenge everything that the President says.

Five will be guys who are having affairs with their teachers so they are thinking about lusty things.

Twenty-five will be products of a “Rush-Hannity-Beck” household and openly repeat what Dad said or what Rush said...driving the English Literature teacher crazy because this ate up an entire hour.

Fourteen of them will be wondering what the big guy is saying because English is a second language for them.

Three will hint things related to 1936 Nazi Germany and be sent home for the rest of the day.

So finally, we come to folks who remain...who might be far-left liberal. They might take something positive out of the speech.

The White House and these national educational geeks haven’t connected to the present school system in thirty years. They grasp little about the make-up or the running of such schools. And they are attempting a tactic that has little to no value on kids who really don’t care.

And Hannity has this guy on nearly every other day, if you can believe it. Why he continues to admire Newt so much, and give him so much airtime is beyond me.

For Newt to come out and make such feel-good statements about Obama's upcoming speech to our kids just shows how far out of the loop he is on the whole story.

It makes me nuts when I know ten times more about a current and important topic than one of our so-called conservative "luminaries".

Newt’s problem is that he thinks too much, as if we were playing a serious and thoughtful chess match with Obama. Obama and his commie friends aren’t interested in playing by the rules; they want to throw out all the pieces and make it so that only he can win.

If ever there were an example of just why we can't trust either party.....

People like McLame, Newt, Romney, Giuliani et al represent not an alternative, but rather just a slower form of Constitutional erosion and National Suicide.

With the possible exception of Bachmann and one or two others, the whole of the congress and the leaders of both parties are just an Obamacare Death Panel offering end-of-life counseling to our form of government.

Out with the Newt, in with the Palin.

Out with Bill Cunningham (radio talker), too. He just made a statement that Sarah Palin "doesn't have a shot" at the Presidency because the MSM has ruined her credibility (to paraphrase him).

Here is yet another high profile "conservative" who should know better, spouting off some stupid statement that doesn't at all comport with reality.

I swear, I'm going to start demanding that anyone who claims to represent conservative views on the public stage, read at Free Republic at least an hour a day to stay informed. This crap just makes me nuts.

The Omnipresent Leader They want us to “pledge to be a servant to our president”? By Mark Steyn

"On Friday, August 28, the principal of Eagle Bay Elementary School in Farmington, Utah — in the name of “education” — showed her young charges the “Obama Pledge” video released at the time of the inauguration, in which Ashton Kutcher and various other bigtime celebrities, two or three of whom you might even recognize, “pledge to be a servant to our president and to all mankind because together we can, together we are, and together we will be the change that we seek.”

Altogether now! Let us chant for mankind and use our pens to write, “O beloved Obama, our courageous president, we are all servants defending the hope for you and marching to change.”

Any self-respecting schoolkid, enjoined by his principal to be a “servant” to the head of state, would reply, “Get lost, creep.” And, if they still taught history in American schools, he’d add, “Oh, and by the way, that question was settled in 1776.”

To accompany President Obama’s classroom speech this week, the White House and America’s “educators” drafted some accompanying study materials. Children would be invited to write letters to themselves saying what they could do to “help the President.”

My suggestion: “Not tell people what I really think about his lousy health-care plan.”

Why is Newt Gingrich considered a top Republican?

He hasn’t been in office since 1998. After he left in disgrace.

And Lamar Alexander. He could have bumrushed the stage during Gov Palin’s spech and even the TN delegation would have no clue who he was. He’s certainly not a top Republican.

Is Tom Foley considered a top Dem?

As for Newt...not a surprise.
