Wow: I Never Thought Pat Buchanan Was This Stupid

Wow: I Never Thought Pat Buchanan Was This Stupid

I've always had respect for Pat Buchanan on an intellectual level, even though I've long suspected his justifiable hatred for the Soviet Union clouded his ability to see World War II clearly. But this is too much:

"Hitler had never wanted war with Poland, but an alliance with Poland such as he had with Francisco Franco's Spain, Mussolini's Italy, Miklos Horthy's Hungary and Father Jozef Tiso's Slovakia".

Buchanan seems to know Hitler's mind better than Hiler.

Hitler in Mein Kampf, Vol. 2, Ch. 14:

"Therefore we National Socialists have purposely drawn a line through the line of conduct followed by pre-War Germany in foreign policy. We put an end to the perpetual Germanic march towards the South and West of Europe and turn our eyes towards the lands of the East. We finally put a stop to the colonial and trade policy of pre-War times and pass over to the territorial policy of the future..."

The future goal of our foreign policy ought not to involve an orientation to the East or the West, but it ought to be an Eastern policy which will have in view the acquisition of such territory as is necessary for our German people.

The last time I checked Poland was due East of Germany. But that's just me and maybe my maps are different than Pat Buchanan's?

What's also odd is that Buchanan seems to forget that the very first thing Hitler did after consolidating his victory in Poland was to encourage migration of Germans to Poland. Exactly in line with his stated intent of gaining "liebensraum" or living space for Germans.

Of course Buchanan is right when he argues that Germany never wanted to conquer the world. We would not, as some claim, be speaking German now had we not entered WWII against Germany.

But did Hitler intend to invade, destroy, occupy, and then colonize the Polish state? Absolutely! Danzig was simply an excuse for the larger cause of lebensraum.

And then on to the Soviet states.

All of Eastern Europe would have been speaking German. Which is why so much of Mein Kampf is spent pining for the good old days of the Tutonic Knights conquering the East.

And while I think it is an interesting counter factual argument whether or not the Soviets and the Nazis would have annihilated each other had we not entered the war it remains a fact that Hitler declared war on us.

Buchanan is a historical ignoramus, writing his-story as he wishes it was (but for that evil Winston Churchill) rather than it actually was.

Buchanan went off the deep end a long time ago.

The media use him as their pet conservative because, first, he attacks Republicans pretty reliably, and secondly, because he is has become an apologist for war-time Germany. That fits with their usual attempts to pain conservatives as Nazis.

Double play.

Good post!

I liked Pat when he defended Reagan on The McLaughlin Group, although his Arabist viewpoint (not necessarily anti Semitic) was pretty clear.

Since then, Pat has completely lost my respect. He has obviously gone off the deep end. The concern/question is when did this happen?

IMO, he is a true reactionary who would be happy if there were less Jews and neo-cons in the world.

Hitler made his intentions clear in Mein Kampf and his actions from the moment he came to power followed those intentions. I think it is quite true that he didn’t want a general war when he ordered the attack on Poland but hoped that the British and French would again temporize in the face of the strategic difficulties of supporting the Poles and in the face of the pact with Stalin. But Hitler intended war all along and to say he didn’t is simply silly.

And the war on the Jews was clearly outlined in Mein Kampf and a central part of the Nazi war effort - so much so that it had a negative impact on the German armies in Russia and France as rolling stock and resources were diverted to feed the extermination centers in Poland.

One of the really startling things about Hitler is that he was so open about what he intended to do. And one of the real lessons of that period is how the rest of the world ignored these and pursued policies based on wishful thinking (hope and change) instead of confronting him head on and stopping him before it was too late.

The Allied countries gave Hitler everything he wanted, every step of the way.
They appeased him each and every time until his military was fully prepared for total war. Then he struck.
It’s as simple as that, and any idiot can glean the truth from even a cursory reading of the historical record.

Any idiot, that is, without a deep-seated bias against Jews.

I think Buchanan is way beyond the border of antisemitism and is in the terrority of full blown resentment of Jews.

He got his butt handed to him because of this problem and he has joined the Left in blaming Jews and Israel for all the world’s woes. Politics make strange bedfellows.

It is interesting to note that when he was a Republican, the liberal media hated him as a antisemite. Now that he has turned against Republicans, they embrace the antisemite in Pat.

From time to time Buchanan writes a piece that is lucid, factual and well done, however, the very next one may show him as a nut case.

It’s as though he suffers from being bipolar that continually screws up on his meds.

Ok, I've got my flame suit on. Here goes. I recently read Buchanan's book. As a big fan of Churchill, and with a great interest in the WWII era, I wanted to know what the fuss was all about. Buchanan makes several points worth considering:

The book is a fascinating read, a complete 180 degrees from what we've come to believe about WWII. At the very least, it will force you to think, even if you come away from it, as I did, not wholly convinced of Buchanan's arguments.

I think Buchanan is right about FDR’s interventionism and blind eye allowing Pearl Harbor, but I’ll never understand why he constantly makes excuses for Nazi Germany. I don’t even think it’s an anti-Zionist thing, because 95% of the time he doesn’t even mention jews. It’s just excuse making for the Nazi party’s actions.

Buchanan has always been Hitler's Baghdad Bob:

Why did Warsaw not negotiate with Berlin, which was hinting at an offer of compensatory territory in Slovakia? Because the Poles had a war guarantee from Britain that, should Germany attack, Britain and her empire would come to Poland's rescue.

But why would Britain hand an unsolicited war guarantee to a junta of Polish colonels, giving them the power to drag Britain into a second war with the most powerful nation in Europe?

QED Buchanan blames World War II on Poland.

We await his proof that Zionists manipulated this "junta of Polish colonels".

To listen to Buchanan and is to hear his bootheels click.

Never underestimate the stupidity of Pat Be-yuk-cannon.

He’s a remnant/inheritor/continuer of that tired old, pathetic wing of the GOP that let itself get bent over the bench and punked bloody by the nazi propaganda machine in the mid ‘30s.

He’s a nazi symp and always has been. That’s why the leftardic msm loves him so. He’s a living breathing generator of narrative fulfillment.

Pat Buchanan learned from his ancestors that Hitler was a good guy, and he has never overcome that handicap, in spite of his apparently superior intellect. Still, I think it’s fair to say that Pat isn’t as much of a NAZI as Barry is a communist. Barry is red from top to bottom.

I googled "when did Pat Buchanan go wacky?", and couldn't find anything definite, but it seems like he's always had some strange ideas which have become more pronounced in the last six or eight years. Maybe, he's always been nuts, and kept a lid on it when he was younger.

It seems that most Conservatives, and those on the left at places like KOS, and Democratic Underground both agree that WWII wasn't Poland's fault, and that Buchanan is nuts. Unfortunately, the left is portraying it as if Pat's nutty ideations are typical of Conservatives.
