Barack Obama's classroom speech backfires
The Australian ^ | September 5, 2009 | Brad Norington

A BACK-TO-SCHOOL speech planned by Barack Obama has turned into an ideological battlefield, as conservative parents claim the US President wants to indoctrinate their children.

Schools from districts in six US states have refused to show students the televised speech planned for Tuesday, after complaints from parents that Mr Obama wants to spread his "socialist agenda".

The protests appear to have left the White House wrong-footed, forcing the revision of an accompanying lesson that had asked students to "write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the President".

It had been hoped Mr Obama's address - about the need for children to work hard and stay at school - would be a positive for him after the pounding he has received over proposed health reforms.

The furore was kicked off on right-wing talk-back radio after Canadian writer and political commentator Mark Steyn accused Mr Obama on Wednesday of trying to create a cult of personality.

Speaking to radio host Rush Limbaugh, Mr Steyn said that asking children to write the letters was "slightly unhealthy". He compared Mr Obama to Korean leader Kim Jong-il and Iraq's former dictator Saddam Hussein.

"It's all part of the cult of personality," Mr Steyn said.

"Obviously, we're not talking about the cult of personality on the Kim Jong-il, Saddam Hussein scale, but I don't see that it's part of American education to get grade-school kids to write letters to themselves about things they can do to help the President."

The Republican Party's chairman in Florida, Jim Greer, has since whipped up opposition, declaring he is "appalled that taxpayer dollars are being used to spread President Obama's socialist ideology".

Mr Greer described Mr Obama as a "Pied Piper", saying he would want to know what anyone from the White House intended to say

They had to politicize it and turn it into indoctrination. The libs know nothing else. I’d have no problem if Obama simply gave a “Keep your noses in your books, stay out of trouble, work hard” speech.

How many libs have attributed the refusal to show the speech to racism?

“The protests appear to have left the White House wrong-footed...”

And hopefully, if we keep the pressure up on every sneaky, socialist thing this guy tries to pull off, we’ll eventually cut ‘em off at the knees! :)

It really ticks me off that even the most simplest facts the media screws up. Somehow they needed to get the villan Rush Limbaugh in on the story.

Rush Limbaugh has been on vacation all week. Mark Steyn guest hosted Wednesday. Steyn was "speaking to" Rush's audience - many who called complaining about this school speech. Rush was not involved at all.

All of them that haven’t tried to soft-pedal the speech as a “stay in school and out of trouble” speech.

Takes a foriegn media to get the story right. U.S. media launched into calling concerned parents “nutty Americans”.

Any doubt now that media is very much part of the Marxist takeover in this country?

Leftists aren’t used to being challenged on their ideology or on their behaviors.

They also are flabbergasted that the race card isn’t working to silence opposition anymore.

The good news is that this administration has shown itself to be absolutely tone deaf to the core values of Americans (and thus will be defeated time and again). It’s almost like foreigners are running the country (hey...wait a minute...).

Exactly...it’s time for us to fight back. We have been silent for far too long. We became complacent and it has gotten us no where.

But you and I know that is not what this little propaganda bit was going to be.

What you see as complacency is just a part of our ideology - live and let live. Let the individual run his own life, don’t use government to control others, etc.

However, the other side has the totally opposite viewpoint - gov’t must be used to control everyone for the “betterment of society”. We let them incremental us up to this point, and we’ve discovered that the water is getting damned hot in this pot.

I’d have no problem if Obama simply gave a “Keep your noses in your books, stay out of trouble, work hard” speech.

I wouldn't either, as much as I dislike Obummer.

But then, an address like that would hardly take up an hour's worth of class time, would it?

“But then, an address like that would hardly take up an hour’s worth of class time, would it?”

It also would not require follow-up studies like books about Dear Leader Obamao or studies and letters about how they can help the President.

That is not a “welcome back, study hard” message. That is a look let me guide you and how can you help me message - also known as indoctrination!!!

Simple question for the Obama leg-humpers. Why didn't he plan the speech for prime time where kids AND their parents could watch together? Think about the type of person that wants to talk to your kids without you being there. Pedophiles and social workers come to mind....

Hmm oh YEAH, that really makes it sound like he was planning to urge them to study hard and stay in school etc.

I figured his message would be: even if you do lots of drugs in high school and college, fail to register for the draft, and fail to show up for classes, you can have your records sealed and end up in the White House.

Parents subject their children to liberal indoctrination in public schools on a regular basis and have been doing so for decades. What difference does an extra fifteen minutes make?

The Dallas Morning News had an "analysis" of this in today's paper comparing previous Presidents and their speeches to schools. In the midst of this, there was this little gem talking about the Bush speech in 1991:

Back then, CNN was still widely viewed as a neutral news purveyor, and it would be years before MSNBC and Fox emerged as soapboxes for the left and right respectively.

When exactly was CNN viewed as a neutral news source?

Analysis: Why the fuss over Obama's speech to students?

this isn’t liberal indoctrination. This is all about Obama. Obama isn’t telling kids to believe in high taxes and obamacare. Those are ideas that can be debated and discussed using logic and reasoning. He wants the kids to believe in him no matter what he does. That’s all about emotion and charisma.

Just received note from my kiddo’s school: (note, he’s a Senior this year)

Excerpt:

As parents, we all have our own political viewpoints and attitudes, and we all want to be able to discuss our viewpoints with our children. From the school’s point of view, we do not feel it is the district’s responsibility or place to emphasize one group’s philosophy and/or values over another. I believe that part of the educational process is to initiate or continue the process of developing a student’s own political viewpoints and philosophies while hearing opposing viewpoints as well. In addition, this is the President of the United States, and regardless of your political viewpoints we will teach a respect for the office and the responsibilities that he has for this nation.

I appreciate the comments and questions that I have received from parents on this issue. They have been very respectful, and most have addressed the issue of the speech’s affect on their own individual students. This is how our partnership in the education of your child is supposed to work.

BCISD campuses will be allowed to participate in the president’s address to the students of the United States. The decision to view this speech will be made at the campus level. BCISD will not broadcast the webcast live but will burn dvd’s for schools to check out and use as they deem appropriate. AS with other controversial issues schools deal with, I want to make sure we are protecting our parents’ rights by allowing them to exclude their children from this activity if that is their wish. Attached to this letter is a form that you can sign and return to your child’s campus if you desire to “opt your child out” of this activity.

The speech will be broadcast live on the White House website www.whitehouse.gov at 11pm eastern standard time. To give parents the opportunity to preview this broadcast, the district will record the speech and show it in our classrooms on Wednesday.

Then it goes on to say turn in the exemption forms by Wednesday morning.

Signed by the Superintendent of Schools

We’ll be signing and turning in my kiddo’s.
