Minot Air Force Base to activate new B-52 squadron
Associated Press ^

Minot Air Force Base is preparing to activate a new B-52 bomber squadron that will send 10 more B-52s to the North Dakota base.
The new unit will be the fourth B-52 squadron in the Air Force. Minot base already has one squadron and Barksdale Air Force Base has the other two B-52 units. The Air Force has not said whether the planes will be transferred from Barksdale or taken from backup aircraft.
Air Force officials say adding the new squadron at Minot is part of plans to put a stronger emphasis on nuclear mission training for B-52 units.

new B-52 bomber I've got the plans right here...
To: neodad
I heard of reports of B-52 pilot discovering by aircraft serial number that his grandfather flew the very same aircraft. It would be possible I guess, but I have not seen any actual story to verify it.

And what a cast. Slim Pickens in the cockpit and James Earl Jones was one of the officers too.
That was a great movie.
For “Fail Safe” the AF wouldn’t let them film a B-58 Hustler. So they went out an caught one taking off (from outside the fence). The “six aircraft” from the “Turkey” formation taking off were all shots of the same aircraft.

The B-52 doing nuclear missions?
Riiiiiiiiiiiiggggggghhhhhhhtttttttt!
Unless it's carrying a Cloaking Device, the B-52 couldn't get to its target now in a nuclear environment in a Month of Sundays. It's radar signature must be off the chain!
"Now if you take a big plane like a 52, see..."

Teh Won's cancellation of the B-3 will have serious effects for strategic air down the line.
Best,
Chris

This is too funny. They are finally going to make a squadron of the bombers they have been keeping up to date but supposedly not in the active inventory.

Not likely as the tall tail 52s which the Grand daddy flew are either in a few museums or scrapped. The short tails are the only ones flying as far as I know.

And what a cast. Slim Pickens in the cockpit and James Earl Jones was one of the officers too. I read somewhere that Dan Blocker (Hoss Cartwright) was considered for the role of Major Kong. It's tough to imagine anyone but Slim in that role, but it might've been just as memorable.

Bingo. They don’t have to get over the target unless they were carrying B-61’s or B-83’s.
And that’s for the B-2’s.

Between the electronic countermeasures and the nuke-tipped cruise missiles, a B-52 is very difficult to defend against. I'm pretty sure that the W-80 equipped Tomahawks are long gone from the bomber fleet, shelved during the first Bush administration. The military retains the option to re-deploy them if the need arises, but AFAIK only submarines carry the Tomahawk-N these days. I suspect the warheads will be coming up on their retirement dates in a few years (and we ain't building no mo'.)

I should add that most “policies” are obviously best guesses on the part of civilians, where nuclear weapons are concerned. IIRC, the USAF incident where “armed” nukes were flown down to Barksdale AFB involved the nuke Tomahawks.

Launch shortly after takeoff from Guam and nuke Vladivostok.

The Bloody 100th was deactivated as an Air Refueling Wing when I was stationed at Beale AFB in the 1980s. It is now active at RAF Mildenhall from what I have heard. The legacy lives on even if it is only tanker trash keeping it alive and growing. As we told the Fighter jock that called us that in my youth, we may be trash, but its a long swim home without us!
As a Baby Boomer in a KC-135A (stream jet) back in 1979 I cut my teeth on refueling the B-52. You couldnt miss the receptacle it had a huge slipway to guide the boom in for a contact. I wonder if they plan on gluing the wings and tail sections back on to the old models that got cut up when I was working the START Treaty in another life.

That’s what I was thinking. We were authorized to wear our parkas off duty. And block heater plug-ins were provided to all base personnel. Even remember some civilians leaving their car run during an entire shift. Also became familiar with the use of jumper cables and starter fluid.
Ah but the hunting and fishing opportunities were great.

A very long time ago in a galaxy very far away, I live in Omaha Neb. near the Offet AFB. They held a drill and every BUFF took off! What a sight to behold, it was then I knew it was the sound of freedom!
Then, when I was back in my beloved CORPS stationed in Yuma, Az. I was posted at the “hot spot” [a rapid response post in the middle of the airfield] & after the Yuma air show we had a B-52 take off and the wings passed right over out P 19 crash fire rescue truck. We were really rocking & rolling then!
