Shoppers are stockpiling traditional light bulbs while they still have the chance.
An EU ban comes into force on Tuesday making it illegal for retailers and wholesalers to import most of the old-style bulbs.
It means once stocks have run out, the only ones available will be the more pricey, low energy variety.
Roger King, who runs Hampton Hill Hardware in Middlesex, said: Ive taken orders this week for quantities in the 50s and 100s.
People dont like being told what to do for a start. Many are concerned that they are not going to be able to see properly with the new type of light because it rapidly diminishes in effectiveness.

I wonder if the UK bulb technology is lagging behind the American bulb technology. Ours don’t dim that quick, at least not any more. (Early ones could be pretty horrible.)
What about the medical implications? Some people need full spectrum light bulbs to combat depression.
Liberals want everyone and everything depressed, especially the economy.

I wouldn’t think this would touch medical lighting applications.
Probably not. I am certain also that the elites would get their light too. One way or another.

Just nip into an appliance store and get an “oven” or “refrigerator” bulb....
I hate the flourescent ones. My eyes are sensitive to refresh rates and they kind of flicker. On top of that they have mercury in them. You can’t just throw them in the trash, but we know people will. So how about we “save the environment” by using them and then create toxic waste dumps out of every landfill. Makes a lot of sense.
They’re getting better (and cheaper) all the time, but I must admit I never heard of them “losing effectiveness”. I always thought the big minus was the time they took to reach full luminescence.
I think daylight simulation bulbs are still available.
Better yet, hit a store thats selling a 4 pack of regular bulbs for a $1. Buy $50 worth. Furthermore, fluorescents won’t fire up in cold weather unless you have a specific ballast.
In addition to raising auto fuel efficiency standards 40 percent, an energy bill passed by Congress yesterday bans the incandescent light bulb by 2014.
President Bush signed the 822-page measure into law today after it was sent up Pennsylvania Avenue in a Toyota Prius hybrid vehicle.
They haven’t started to ration electricity yet?
thanks, bush :/
They aren’t medical applications per se. They are light bulbs that have full spectrum (ie natural light).
A “full spectrum” incandescent bulb has a blue coating, to offset the red bias of the hot filament’s spectrum so that the visible range is similar to that of the sun. They put out less light than an uncoated bulb but things look nicer under them.
Regular incandescent bulbs are nowhere near being "full spectrum".

Remember when the control freaks howled, tore their hair, and beat their chests over mercury in thermometers? We *HAD* to get the EEEEeeeeeeeeviiiiiillllllllllll mercury out of our homes!
Now we bring it back in? Oh, I see - this is *diiiiffffeeeeerent* (said in metrosexual whine) because the intentions are gooooooood.
Remind me again: Why do I hate leftist busybodies?
I’d like to put all these mercury bulbs into politicians’ recesses where the sun don’t shine.
I had a skin cancer removed from my nose and the light the doc used was so bright it made me nauseous, even with my eyes covered with a cloth.

Yeah and now they want to take over health care...
***I must admit I never heard of them losing effectiveness.***
They don’t last as long as it is claimed on the box. I’ve replaced several 5 year bulbs after they blew out in one year.
Few things last as long as they are claimed to :)
