The memo that’s about to shake the Atlanta mayor’s race 12:39 pm August 27, 2009, by Jim Galloway

A memo arguing that African-Americans should unite behind a single black candidate in the race for mayor of Atlanta is about to become a prime topic of debate.

The material, which we include below, is said to be distributed by Aaron Turpeau, a long-time City Hall figure, on behalf of something called the Black Leadership Forum.

Turpeau argues that Council President Lisa Borders is the only candidate who can prevent the election of Councilwoman Mary Norwood as the first white mayor since Atlanta Mayor Sam Massell.

Both Borders and state Sen. Kasim Reed, also an African-American, have scheduled pressers this afternoon. AJC colleagues Eric Stirgus and Ernie Suggs will be there. We anticipate that Reed will demand that Borders renounce the memo.

Here’s the statement Reed’s campaign has put out in the last few minutes:

“Not only do I find these comments racially charged and vitriolic, I completely repudiate them because they are fundamentally wrong and do not belong in today’s …

This is why most of the white population lives in the burbs of Atlanta.

I would say...since the early 90’s...Atlanta has become the New Jersey of the South. It’s a failed city-in-waiting. Most of the real players or workers of the town...live at least forty-five minutes away by interstate. There is zero interest in living within the city...even in upscale neighborhoods or high-rises.

I would even go as far as saying that within forty years...it could be the next Detroit. I think the political spectrum has swung in such a degree that competence and dependability are something that they really don’t want in any political candidate.

The curious thing here....up until the early 1960s...Atlanta really wasn’t much of a player in anything. It was the biggest town in Georgia...but it had nothing beyond that. So there is this glory period...1960 to early 1990’s....and then...it peaked out.

As I look at your post, I remember a talk radio out of Louisville, KY mentioning this in the early morning. I heard it. It is discussed here. I have not heard anything about this throughout the day.

>4. The changing demographics which show a more rapid growth in the city’s white population (faster and a higher percentage than anywhere else in the country) requires that we critically evaluate all candidates;

What a stinking pile of racist trash these dimwits espouse. They keep pinching off babies hooked on crack, welfare and
the work ethic of a one toed sloth.

They won’t be happy till they start hacking their differences with machetes just like they do back in their beloved namesake homeland.

It almost as if they thrive on starting race wars with their hate and bigotry. And they propagate this crap
onto their offspring forever.

probably best to just allow the blacks to do as they wish, divide and conquer in the liberal Democrat way and install their own candidate in office simply on the basis of race. After all what’s wrong with blacks representing blacks if they are the majority? Hasn’t it worked out in the past when blacks have been elected to positions of responsibility?

Surely we can point to the likes of Jefferson in LA, Paterson in NY, Dinkins in NY, Marion Barry in DC, Kwami Infumai (sp) in Detroit, and even Obama to see the quality of their leadership abilities...can’t we?

I doubt it will take 40 years...

As one who was “born and raised” there it brings more than a tear to my eye to watch what has become of what was once such a promising city. My father worked 27 years for the dept. of Public Safety and says his best day ever was the day he left.

I dread to even drive thru it to other destinations now.

“Grizzard was a lefty, no?”

I never took him that way, so I looked it up. Best I can find is he was raised a Dem and switched over to conservative at some point as an adult.

“So, just when did he supposedly switch?”

*******

“Grizzard deals with the end of the Carter years including his own feelings of reluctantly becoming a Reaganite (the evolution took awhile, but Grizzard when from liberal to conservative over a ten year period).”

*******

This, though, says he frustrated his conservative readers by supporting abortion and going after the NRA. It also says he once had a nurse who looked like Hillary Clinton and he didn’t want her because he didn’t care for Hillary very much:

Pinging dirtbiker for more info, who has this quote on his homepage:

To quote my favorite Southern humorist, the late, great, Lewis Grizzard (pronounced “griz ZARD”), who was American by birth; Southern by the Grace of God... “My political views are of the Right, because if you’re Left, you can’t go right, and if you’re Right, you can’t go wrong!”
