Dear Mr. President,
Tomorrow we will mark the fourth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which claimed the lives of 1,400 Louisianians and nearly killed a great American city. We will miss having you in our midst.
We know you don't lack passion for our community and its recovery. Though you haven't been here as president, as a senator you visited five times after Katrina. We remember well the fervor of your speech at Tulane University on your last visit, a year and a half ago.
"I promise you that when I'm in the White House, I will commit myself every day to keeping up Washington's end of the bargain," you said then. "This will be a priority of my presidency. And I will make it clear to members of my administration that their responsibilities don't end in places like the 9th Ward; they begin in places like the 9th Ward."
We await the fulfillment of many of these promises. We are grateful for the federal aid that has flowed our way, including $14.7 billion in improvements to levees and drainage and other storm protection measures. And under your administration, the federal recovery bureaucracy has been eased, as even Republican officials here acknowledge.
But much remains to be done.

Pelican State ping
I’ll bet the City of New Orleans and the State of Louisiana still haven’t filled out the forms for aid from the Federal Government.
They might want to talk to city and state officials and ask about that relief money.
LOL
That’s a keeper.
Thank you. ;-)

OK. That’s about the funniest thing I’ve seen ALL YEAR!!!! LMAO!!!!
What city do you reside. I hope it never goes under water.
Looter Guy truly is everywhere! ;)
Hahahahhaaa ... I’m stealing this image :)
Katrina was a crisis of a a sub-culture totally bereft of personal responsibility and initiative, more than anything else.
It's been four years since Katrina. I have no more sympathy left.
Next question?
Did LA overwhelmingly vote for this guy based on those hollow promises? Somehow, I’m thinking they did...
LOL! Great one!
What about those hard hit people in Mississippi?? Katrina hit just about on the border of the two states, and many people there were in just as dire straits as LA. Why don’t we hear about them? And isn’t Obama going to fix things up for them too? Or have they perhaps just gone ahead, doing what they needed to do?
Actually, McCain carried Louisiana as a whole, while Democrat stronghold Orleans Parish (County) overwhelmingly voted for Ohbummer.
Did you have 11 feet of water in your house?
Keep waiting ... suckers ... you'll wait forever
That is the post of the year.
What is your point?
There are tens of billions of dollars that were designated for New Orleans in the great congressional pity party of four years ago and that money is still there for the taking. There are a whole lot of development, construction and real estate companies working hard to get a piece of that pie, especially while those industries are in such a slump. The plans that are out there for new shopping centers, apartment buildings and infrastructure are almost grotesque in their scope while every other municipality is fighting off bankruptcy.
Not to be a buttinski, but...
I have made a conscious decision not to live in:
a flood prone area;
an earthquake prone area;
a mudslide prone area;
a hurricane prone area;
a forrest fire prone area;
etc. etc, etc.
If I happen to fall victim to
some other natural disaster
I do not expect you
or the federal government
to bail me out.
collective fat, drunken rear-end, toilet of a city? Houston?
Where were you born? By the way thanks for the $74,565.

I have family in Pascagoula, MS. I feel badly for the people of New Orleans and what they have endured, but over half of the residents were living on government assistance before Katrina. New Orleans is a great example of why a the entitlement mentality is destroying our nation. Pascagoula is an example of people who appreciate what help they get, and take care of the rest themselves.
Actually I was born here in Michigan. Surely we must top the list of safest states on the natural disaster list.
Our disaster is political and urban.
I CHOSE to live in a city on a hill, not in a coastal flood zone BELOW SEA LEVEL!
New Orleans is not representative of Louisiana, it is a bastard sewer abomination.
The rest of the state is a thriving conservative republic, run by a Conservative Governor.
I believe that happened to Houston after the “refugees” showed up.
Do you mean everyone born in New Orleans should have left the city for a new city?
No No No No! In fact can you convince the ones who moved to Atlanta and doubled the crime rate to move back? I loved driving past the 'Ray Nagin for Mayor' billboards every day.
You can’t have it both ways.
I like to play in the traffic, but everytime I get hit by a bus, I don’t expect you to pay for my medical bills.
I sure hope that guy copyrighted his image and likeness : )
No one wanted the tragedy caused by Katrina to occur, even GWB, who ordered the levee's blown up. As Christians we should pray for our fellow man and help them as best we can.
That being said, the best way to help the people of New Orleans, a large portion of who lived on the generosity of others as given by the federal government, and who time and time again squandered the money given them to repair their infrastructure problems by electing corrupt officials over and over again, is to force them to rebuild themselves, just as Chicago did after the fire, San Fransisco did after the earthquake and Atlanta did after Sherman.
Besides, the federal government has no constitutional right to seize money from other cities, counties and states and give it to New Orleans, Orleans Parish and Louisiana.
“Tomorrow we will mark the fourth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina...and the white racist honky Bush is gone and we want you to pour strawberry syrup and candied cherries on the chocolate city.”
“...and the white racist honky Bush is gone and we want you to pour strawberry syrup and candied cherries on the chocolate city.
Your ignorance leaves me speechless. Everyone knows that it was “the white racist honky Karl Rove that steered the hurricane with his weather control machine to pour strawberry syrup and candied cherries on the chocolate city.” Please get your facts straight, sir!!!
/sarcasm off ;-)
LOL!
Well, at least Karl didn’t deliver white milk.
So youre gonna live in the mountains and live off of fish and deer?
Good luck.
Well, why not? I grew up on the coast of Florida. I left for numerous reasons, one being HURRICANES.
Having spent time in New Orleans, I could think of MANY other reasons to leave in addition to the obvious. Chief among them being the statist/redistributionist mentality of the inhabitants.
To answer your question directly: No I do not think everyone should leave. However, I think that everyone who chooses to stay should pay for their own losses through risk-pegged insurance and be responsible for themselves.
Got a problem with paying for your own responsibilities/liabilities?
I think a good portion of the population of Louisiana could not care a less about New Orleans. Or your ignorance either.
