SNIPPET: "RIYADH: A suicide bomber lightly wounded a senior prince largely credited for Saudi Arabia's anti-terrorism campaign when he blew himself up just before going into a gathering of well-wishers for the Muslim holy month of Ramazan, the state news agency said Friday.

It was the first known assassination attempt against a member of the royal family since Saudi Arabia began its crackdown on al-Qaeda affiliated militants eight years ago following the September 11 terror attacks in the United States."

SNIPPET: "It said the prince, who is the son of Interior Minister Prince Nayef, was discharged from the hospital and nobody else was seriously injured.

The Interior Ministry has spearheaded the kingdom's aggressive campaign against terrorism, one that has intensified since militants first struck in the kingdom in May 2003. The country is the birthplace of al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and was home to 15 of the 19 September 11 hijackers.

On August 19, authorities announced the arrest of 44 suspected militants with al-Qaeda links in a yearlong sweep that also uncovered dozens of machine guns and electronic circuits for bombs."

“U.S. Adds AQAP bomb maker to terrorist list”
By BILL ROGGIO
March 24, 2011

SNIPPET: “In February 2009, Asari was the eighth al Qaeda operative listed on Saudi Arabia’s list of 85 most wanted terrorists. The Saudi government described Asiri as an “expert in explosives and poison.”

Asiri has also begun to release propaganda for AQAP. In December 2010, Asiri announced the death of Abu Hammam Qahtani, the founder of Sada al Malahim, AQAP’s print magazine.”

“Saudi suspect in underwear bomb plots trained others, U.S. says”

By Phil Stewart
ASPEN, Colo. | Sat Jul 20, 2013 8:25am IST
(Reuters) -

SNIPPET: “”There is intelligence that he has unfortunately trained others and there’s a lot of effort to identify those folks,” Pistole told the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado.

Asked by Reuters afterward about the nature of that intelligence, Pistole said Asiri was believed to have trained a small number of people. He added that the intelligence was “credible.”

Believed to be in his early 30s, Asiri, who survived a U.S. drone missile attack in 2011, has drawn scrutiny for his skill at fashioning hard-to-detect bombs and hiding them in clothing or equipment.”

“Al Qaeda Threat: Officials Fear ‘Ingenious’ Liquid Explosive”

By RHONDA SCHWARTZ (@rhondaABC) and JAMES GORDON MEEK (@meekwire)
Aug 5, 2013, 8:57 PM

SNIPPET: “The officials said the new technique is believed to have been developed by the Yemen-based al Qaeda affiliate al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), home to notorious alleged bomb maker Ibrahim al-Asiri. Al-Asiri is suspected of being the mastermind behind several devious explosive devices including the underwear bomb and surgically implanted body bombs.

Al-Asiri was listed today among Yemen’s 25 top terrorists, who the Yemeni government said were planning to carry out operations in the capital, Sana’a. The Yemeni government is offering 5 million Yemeni rials, or $23,000, for information leading to the capture of any of the terrorists.”

SNIPPET: “In addition to the new liquid bomb, a U.S. official said American spy agencies are concerned the attack could use what some call “Frankenbombers,” suicide bombers who could carry an improvised explosive device sewn into their body cavity.

Sunday on “This Week,” Rep. Dutch Ruppersberger, D-MD — the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee — said the intercepted communications called for a “major attack.””

Department of State’s Terrorist Designation of Ibrahim Hassan Tali Al-Asiri

Media Note
Office of the Spokesman

Washington, DC
March 24, 2011

The Secretary of State has designated al-Qa’ida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) operative and bomb maker Ibrahim Hassan Tali al-Asiri under E.O. 13224, which targets terrorists and their supporters. This action will help stem the flow of finances to al-Asiri by blocking all property subject to U.S. jurisdiction in which al-Asiri has an interest and prohibiting all transactions by U.S. persons with al-Asiri. AQAP has previously been designated by the United States under Executive Order 13224 and as a Foreign Terrorist Organization.

Al-Asiri is an AQAP operative and serves as the terrorist organization’s primary bomb maker. Before joining AQAP, al-Asiri was part of an al-Qa’ida affiliated terrorist cell in Saudi Arabia and was involved in planned bombings of oil facilities in the Kingdom.

Al-Asiri gained particular notoriety for the recruitment of his younger brother as a suicide bomber in a failed assassination attempt of Saudi Prince Muhammed bin Nayif. Although the assassination attempt failed, the brutality, novelty and sophistication of the plot is illustrative of the threat posed by al-Asiri. Al-Asiri is credited with designing the remotely detonated device, which contained one pound of explosives concealed inside his brother’s body.

Al-Asiri is currently wanted by the Government of Saudi Arabia. In addition, Interpol has published an Orange Notice warning the public about the threat posed by him.
