Jaycee Lee Dugard, who was 11 in 1991 when she was snatched ...
...
The case broke after Garrido was spotted Tuesday with two children as he tried to enter the University of California, Berkeley, campus to hand out religious literature. The officers said he was acting suspiciously toward the children. They questioned him and did a background check, determining he was a parolee, and informed his parole officer.
Garrido was ordered to appear for a parole meeting and arrived Wednesday with Dugard, his wife and two children. During questioning, corrections officials said he admitted kidnapping Dugard. It was not known if he had a lawyer.
...
People who knew Garrido said he became increasingly fanatic about his religious beliefs in recent years, sometimes breaking out into song and claiming that God spoke to him through a box.
"In the last couple years he started getting into this strange religious stuff. We kind of felt sorry for him," said Tim Allen, president of East County Glass and Window Inc. in Pittsburgh, who bought business cards and letterhead from Garrido's printing business for the last decade. Three times in recent years, Garrido arrived at Allen's showroom with two "cute little blond girls" in tow, he said.
In April 2008, Garrido registered a corporation called Gods Desire at his home address, according the California Secretary of State. During recent visits to the showroom, Garrido would talk about quitting the printing business to preach full time and gave the impression he was setting up a church, Allen said.
"He rambled. It made no sense," he said.
Garrido would talk about holding events at UC Berkeley and mentioned the names of important people as if he knew them. Allen said he had no inkling of Garrido's criminal record.

The "compound" had electricity from an extension cord, an outhouse and a shower - as in crude camping.
None of the children had even been to school or seen a doctor. They were completely isolated.
disgusting..he impregnated her at the age of 13! LIFE IN PRISON PIG!
Really sad; I hope those girls can recover.
Yeah; time to open up a can of Jack Bauer on that SOB
This story is someplace well beyond disturbing and horrifying. Modern psychology would tell us, at the ages of 11 and 15, a lot of damage has been done that very well may be permanent, to say nothing of the mother and the damage that she has had to endure.
I'm sure that they'll get tremendous treatment, much of it if not all of it pro bono, but they're in for an uphill climb. Why the Death Penalty isn't in-play here, is another crime in and of itself.
Death penalty. Kidnapping, rape, imprisonment and his wife too. Fry them. They are pure evil. Sickening.
That is in all likelihood exactly what will happen. I'd prefer the death penalty, myself.
He acts like he’s a muslim or something
Maybe a few lifers will take care of him
Incredible evil.
The compound was in a second backyard concealed from the first by plants, a tarp, and some old appliances. The entrance was concealed behind the tarp. It wasn’t visible from the house, nor from any of the neighboring yards. This is going to spawn a hundred horror flicks, much like Ed Gein’s crimewave did 50 years ago.
I’m not sure I want to see what DU, Kos or HuffingstuffPost have to say about this.
In TN about 20 years ago, “mommy’s boy-fiend” beat her 3 year old child mortally. While the baby was dying in the emergency room, grandpa (a well known Nashville pharmacist) went out to the car, got a gun, walked back into the hospital and killed “mommy’s boy-fiend”. The jury refused to convict him on anything other than a misdemeanor.
Apparently he did it with great enjoyment. All the more reason for him to die a drawn out and very painful death. Crucifixion comes to mind.
He had a brilliant mind.
I can’t disagree with you there.
probably just a bunch of “Hey what happened to ‘Doctor God?’ He used to come here all the time......
In California, they're liable to let him free to save money.
That’s why I like juries!
parsy, who trusts his fellow Americans to do the right thing most of the time
Crucifixion.
What the H*!! is the point of requiring sex offenders to register and re-register every year if nobody ever checks up on what they’re doing? 18 years this guy had a kidnapped girl, plus her children for more than a decade of this time, housed in a makeshift “compound” behind his house, and nobody from law enforcement ever came over to have a look around? Sounds like there may be plenty of sex offenders duly going through their yearly “registration” requirements, setting off for a brief visit to the registration office while they’ve got a dozen bloodied victims dangling from chains in their bedroom back home.
I hate to think what happened to the other children. Some reports say she bore “several” children while this guy was imprisoning her, and for a 29 year old who bore her first child at 14, that seems likely.
I believe this is the very rare story about which posters to Free Republic and DailyKos et al will agree.
Actually I rather doubt that's missing. Probably we just haven't heard the details yet. The 11 and 15 year old girls were apparently his children, and if he kidnapped an 11 year old to rape and impregnate her repeatedly, I don't imagine his interactions with the resulting daughters were pure and chaste.
Yes, and maybe it's time to discuss killing all pedophiles. I don't see any reason to support them in prison - or half way houses. It might be time to start the discussion.
Actually a parole officer did come out but the entrance to where the girls enclosures were were camouflaged.
I was thinking of that myself. It's probably a foregone conclusion that they were assaulted as well.
I just saw the overhead pictures of the neighborhood in which they lived for the last 18 or so years. With the houses so incredibly close together, it's shocking that no one noticed a woman and two small children living in the backyard shed - or heard them for that matter.
What makes his crimes even more nauseating is that he evokes God’s name to justify his actions. And what’s with the idiot wife letting it happen?
Lord, I hope so. But, I doubt it. I'm guessing that there's more than a few on this board (including me) that believe this animal should be eligible for the death penalty. Most leftist don't "believe" in capital punishment. I'm guessing that's the prevailing opinion on Kos and the gang.
Guess pedophile preacher ignored that Jesus spoken quote.
It is spelled Pittsburg, no H on the end.
Hellhole of hellholes.
You think the little ones are sinners?
Just take them rascals out in the swamp Put 'em on their knees and tie 'em to a stump Let the rattlers and the bugs and the alligators do the rest.
'Simple Man'---by Charlie Daniels Band
Now that is my kind of ending.
No--- he brought them unwillingly to participate in his own sin thereby corrupting them with it --and that's what the wording of that scripture means.
Was it a radio? And was God's first name "Rush"?
No, evangelical.
Is he pretending to be part of some strange Mormon sect?
No, evangelical
Wrong! That’s not Evangelical!
With multiple sex partners ... Mormonism came to mind ... . Age was not a barrier for that compound out in Utah.
As long as we don't let idiots define the term pedophiles. Equating a 19 year old having a 15 year old girlfriend (which I totally object to) with a 19 year old abusing a pre-teen is nonsensical. I'd totally support death for people who abuse actual children.
Flame away!
Yes, I familiar with the law, even in California. But, there's a tremendous difference between what punishment this man should be eligible for, and what he is eligible.
Less than 100 years ago in the very same city in which he lived, this guy could have, and would have been hanged just for stealing horses. Now, that sounds excessive by today's standards, but back in the day, if you stole a man's horse(s), there's a reasonable chance you could be killing him by stranding him someplace not very forgiving. So, to deter criminals from committing a crime that might possibly create lethal or life-altering consequences, they hanged horse thieves. It didn't stop it, but it made it much less common.
This kidnapper/pedophile/rapist has ruined - probably forever - the lives of three innocent children. For that, in my opinion, he should forfeit his own. It won't undo the damage he's already done, nor will it make anyone whole, but any amount of satisfaction it brings either the victims or the people of California, would be worth it.
For a mandatory death penalty - having sex with a person under the age of 11. All the other laws stay in place as they are - but sex with a child 11 pulls an automatic death sentence. To be carried out within 8 months.
Thus introducing more Americans to Rule 303.
That's better...
"Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin."
It says the little ones sin.
Camouflaged? Did you see the aerial photos of that place? Given that many sex offenders have been known to harbor victims at the their homes or other properties they control, it behooves anyone charged with inspecting their home to inspect *everything* and to pay especially close attention to things that look peculiar or out of place. When you see an array of tents and sheds in the backyard of a suburban home of a sex offender, the right reaction is to go inside each and every one and see what’s there. Also check the basement, the attic, the garage, and the entire outdoor surface of the property. And of course any computers in the home.
