Ted Kennedy a Heroically Tragic, Flawed Man
Entitlement Syndrome ^ | 08/26/2009 | Scott Michaels

Posted on 08/26/2009 7:54:29 PM PDT by BigKahuna

I'm answering my evening emails and reflecting on one, in particular. My correspondent, a man of definite liberal outlook who made a small fortune in the sporting goods market beginning in the late 1980s, is lamenting the passing of Ted Kennedy, last son of the original Democratic political dynasty…

Here's his take: "He represented the proper conflation of strongly held views and a simultaneous collegial approach. That's also the view of most Republicans with whom he worked. Certainly you may not agree with his political views …” It went on for some time after that.

… Most conservatives would, at best, say that Ted Kennedy was a man who tried, by his lights, to do what he thought was best for the country. It's a mark of his stature and power that we'll most likely be living with the consequences of his legislative output -- for better or worse -- for generations to come.

He was also a man of gargantuan appetites who frequently in his earlier years demonstrated a lust for life that was positively Falstaffian at times, though that same lust led him into at least two tragic situations, on in 1969 and the other in 1991.

All the above being said, my own personal view is much like that of Marc Antony's, in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar: "I come to bury Ted Kennedy, not to praise him. The evil that men do lives after them; The good is oft interred with their bones; So let it be with Ted Kennedy."

In closing, I guess I'd just say God bless and forgive Ted Kennedy, and may he find the peace in death that he never seemed to be completely able to find in his long, boisterous and fully public life, warts and all.

"Ted Kennedy, last son of the original Democratic political dynasty"

We broke away from England because of dynasties this should be a strong strong indication of what is wrong with this country many in office believe that they are a Dynasty.

There are plenty of people in this country that lead "heroic" lives without acting like idiots. Kennedy may have been true to his political ideals, such as they were, but he was a disgrace in his personal life. Of course, a lot of that stupidity spilled over into his political life, so it is hard to seperate the two.

I think Michaels is with you. He quoted Antony in his eulogy of Caesar and said that ...”the evil men do lives after them.”

Kennedy has much to answer for, not least of which is his behavior in 1969 and 1991, to name just a tiny bit of his life in full.

He really blew up in his later years. Probably pushing close to 350-400lbs.

Lyin’ all over D.C., in as many womens’ beds as he could, from what a lot of Kennedy historians say.

Is this guy on crack? Ted Kennedy was a self serving dangerous little weasel that used unmerited power to pontificate and enforce his beliefs.

Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar: “I come to bury Ted Kennedy, not to praise him. The evil that men do lives after them...”

Shakespeare is spot-on here. We the living are forced to contend with the Teddy’s legacy, and some more than others.

Yup. Michaels said that we, our children and our grandchildren are going to be forced to live with the consequences of his legislations for years to come. I think it’s going to go on for longer than that.

But: You see what a good PR man can do for you? Turn you into a veritable saint ;-)

No surprise, considering it’s a another son of wealth and privilege in Chris Dodd you’re talking about. But they’ve been catching a free pass from the media for years.

Not that I’m defending the writer, but I get what he says when he uses the term “heroically tragic.” In ancient days, if you really, really screwed up you were said to have done so in a heroic way.

George Armstrong Custer, who led his vastly outnumbered force into a slaughter, is an example of being heroically tragic, just like Kennedy and his many failures are, also.

“Drawing a blank. What happened in 1991?”

Drunk, he woke up his son and nephew, William Kennedy Smith, and convinced them to go out for more booze and more women. The evening ended in what most believe was Smith raping a bartender, and with Kennedy actively participating in trying to cover it up.

Until the Media realize and understand that he was not only a flawed human being, but worse - saved his life in place of others, will I even begin to believe them. He had the media’s faith and for that they not only forgive him, but canonize him which is wrong...

His lack of understanding of his actions (because he was a kennedy) is unforgivable. He turned out to be so much worse than his beliefs although I imagine that he might have been trying to undo his wrong through the media which believes as he did.

I understand. My plan, when I finally bite the big one, is to be cremated and interred in the columbarium at Arlington. I imagine I’ll finally get to hear for myself the screeching and howling from some folks laid to rest there at the thought of a man who supported not a single war they fought in also lying at rest, next to them.

The writer, in the full post, touched on all those things. Kennedy will have much to answer for, especially as a self-professed “committed Roman Catholic,” when it comes to his unyielding support for all forms of abortion, for his anti-war stance, and for his behavior in the Kopechne and William Kennedy Smith rape case.

I'm trying to think of a movie where Robin Williams plays the part of a gay man with a normal son....?

I love that line where a waiter comes up and tells William's character "The Kennedy's are looking for someone to pay their bill". Or words to that effect.

Anyone?

Heh...not sure if you are being a bit humorous or not...but hey...

Many of us have fought for the United States in wars and will NOT have any chance of being buried in Arlington. Now if you really thing that it has to do with that - you are either a non-citizen or a non combatant.

So, either you can take your foolish statements and do as you may or be buried with honors somewhere else.

I really did not like what you said and the ideals that it desecrated. Kennedy should NOT be buried there...

I’m agreeing with you. I plan on being interred there after cremation, and I imagine there’s going to be an interesting conversation among all of us there about the fraud and imposter lying at rest, and with a veritable 24/7 worship-fest from the public, day after day, forever.

Let’s not forget how he destroyed his first wife, who never guessed what his character was when she married him. He is the kind of man who must always walk the wire always thiniking that the net will catch him, and who is dismayed when he lands hard. His courage was the courage of desperation.

Ted used the Constitution as toilet paper and bought off the judicial system for personal gain. All of his alleged greatness stems from wealth redistribution of the sweat and ingenuity of others who do the heavy lifting. America is free at last, free at last, from this despotic scoundrel.
