At a time in which US student lag behind their foreign counterparts in reading, writing and arithmetic; and at a time in which 250 years of American history is taught in selective sound bites with little focus on the complexity of the event, Governor Quinn signed into law legislation requiring schools to educate students as to the forceful removal of Mexican migrants during the Great Depression.
The law, written by State Senator, Willie Delgado (D), states, "that the teaching of history shall include ...

Ahh, “Operation Wetback”, IIRC.
Worth repeating.
Might be useful to remind Mexican kids sitting in seats in American schools that it could all end abruptly and without appeal or sympathy, so maybe they should get prepared for the inevitable.
Its really tough to describe how sick I am of hearing about these bitter haters and their constant anti-American harangues.
“At a time in which US student lag behind their foreign counterparts in reading, writing and arithmetic; “
Since when has a government school given a damn about educating kids. It’s all about indoctrination now. The hard left knows this is the future of their movement.
It’s time for people to join school boards, their local parents association, and any other group that has an influence on the schools. Little did I know, when my children were in school and I was president of the PTA that I would go “toe to toe” with the Superintendent of Schools in our district over one of his policies. Never back down if you feel you are right and you have the law on your side.
hey Illinois you get what you voted for
vote for anti-American libs
get anti-Americanism
should be of no shock to anyone
No.
Now I seem to recall the “Operation Wetback” was under Eisenhower, not FDR.
Actually Operation Wetback was during Eisenhower.
Both operations were correct in their scope
Did anyone else read that article? I don’t recall any history
referring to the “illegal deportation of 2,000,000 US citizens
of Mexican descent.” Does the author of this screed have any
documentation?
Yes
Unintended consequences may bite, Willie...
I don't think it got up to 2 mil, more like 20 thousand or something.
“Operation Wetback” We should do it again.
I agree with this law (gasp!). Our kids need to know ALL about America, including the stuff we are ashamed of. Should we stop telling them about the Japanese internment camps? Do you all think that was ok? Or the Jim Crow laws? You ok with that too?
We started as a melting pot, and we continue as one. Sadly, every now and then, someone decides to take a spoon and pull some of the stuff out of the pot and toss it aside. This is America, and that’s not the way it should be. Also, this is not some third-world dictatorship (well, we can argue the finer points of that argument later:) where history is constantly being re-written to suit and flatter whoever is in office.
America should equal truth: the good, the bad and the ugly.
I agree with you that they should be taught our unvarnished history. But it won’t come as any huge surprise to me if the lessons taught are more of the same about what a horrible country this is, how our history is just one long tale of oppression and discrimination, white people are mean, selfish, murdering bastards etc. Wonder if they will teach them anything about the Marshall Plan and the reconstruction of Japan? The role white people played in the Civil War and the Civil Rights movement? The role charity has played in the development of our country. The elaboration of English common law and the rule of law. My point is, these people are in a rush to tell students about the bad that has happened, and nothing about the good we have done.
The trouble is that this will be taught in a biased way. The numbers will be changed. They will lump legal aliens, illegal aliens, and citizens together. They will ignore the fact that a baby born to illegal parents could not stay in the US if the parents were deported.
My kids were in the local Japanese system and, beleive it or not, the Japanese history books do a pretty decent job of teaching all this to their kids, plus mine who were fotrunate enough to spend their entire elementary school years (and part of junior high) in Japan.
When was the last time a lot of us read an American History textbook? My last was 2 years ago, and granted, it was ABeka, so it has a Christian slant, but all the uglies were there. It wasn’t a screed about how the white man ruined the continent. It was pretty unbiased.
"For example, one high school American history textbook devotes six lines to George Washington and six and a half pages to Marilyn Monroe. Other books emphasize only that Washington owned slaves, and describe him as a mediocre leader.
"Further, in some states, history standards of what students need to learn reflect the extreme of political correctness. Earlier this year, the New Jersey Department of Education decided that George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin would not be included in the revised version of the state's history standards. They also excluded the Pilgrims and the Mayflower. And they ordered that the word "war" be replaced by the word "conflict"...
did you read the article, the 2,000,000 figure was furnished by the politicians, ap and tribune...not by the author of this article.
Also included in the bill:
This is to be taught and tested by the 8th grade.
The teaching of history also shall include a study
of the role of labor unions and their interaction with
government in achieving the goals of a mixed free enterprise
system.
“Goals” of a “mixed free enterprise system???
They are called educators.
