Many Baby Boomers are Continuing Illicit Drug Use into Their Later Years...
Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration ^ | August 19, 2009 | SAMHSA Press Office

Posted on 08/25/2009 10:42:46 AM PDT by Berlin_Freeper

Many baby boomers (Americans in the generation born between 1946 and 1964) are continuing to use illicit drugs as they grow older, causing the rate of illicit drug use to go up within the 50 to 59 year old age segment of the population. According to a new analytical publication produced by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), those aged 50 to 59 reporting use of illicit drugs within the past year has nearly doubled from 5.1 percent in 2002 to 9.4 percent in 2007 while rates among all other age groups are statistically staying the same or decreasing.

An Examination of Trends in Illicit Drug Use among Adults Aged 50 to 59 in the United States is the first in a series of new scientific reports being published periodically by SAMHSA’s Office of Applied Studies that will provided detailed analyses on important substance abuse and mental health issues challenging the nation.

“These findings show that many in the Woodstock generation continue to use illicit drugs as they age,” said SAMHSA Acting Administrator Eric Broderick, D.D.S., M.P.H. “This continued use poses medical risks to these individuals and is likely to put further strains on the nation’s health care system -- highlighting the value of preventing drug use from ever starting.”

The report analyzes many aspects of this phenomenon including the types of illicit substances involved, different demographic and behavioral factors associated with higher rates of use, and other issues. The data used in the analysis comes from a wide range of sources including 16,656 respondents aged 50 to 59 participating in the 2002 through 2007 National Surveys on Drug Use and Health – the nation’s premier national public health survey of its kind.

This is NOT a surprise. Look at how many of them ended up in The One’s czardom and cabinet.

Sorry folks people who justified their drug use then still find a way to justify it now

I’m afraid the worst and most undignified aging scenes will come when Generation X (The Whiners, Generation Woe is Me, The Crybabies, The Worst Generation, Generation Cronkite) get older and the pains of aging is added upon their generally already whiny demeanor.

Baby boomers are overwhelmingly against Healthcare ‘reform’..

Demonize (buncha damn’ druggies) the opposition??

And, serendipitously, laying the groundwork for grist for the ‘Death Panels’??

Born in 1968 so I'm not really apart of either generation. As an outside observer I will have to go against you and say that the baby boomers are winning the whiner war.

Both generations have their faults but I have to say I have my biggest arguments with boomers. Bunch of know-it-alls.

I’m amazed at the way people who are normally skeptics when it comes to reports from federal bureaucracies suddenly swallow whole whatever comes down the pipe about drug abuse statistics.

My son told me he had heard that the government was analyzing dollar bills for coke residue to see where there was the biggest problems.

Before he told me who had the most I guessed......Washington DC

“But how did you know mom?”

Now we are BOTH looking for the information to confirmed.

Here's another news flash for SAMHSA — the Japs Hit Pearl.
For the love of Mike! Where have these “experts” been for the last 40 years? Puleeze. I can't stand it! How stupid are these people??? I've watched as everyone around me has turned a blind eye to the ad hoc “Better Living Through Chemistry” adherents around me. Give me a break. And these are the rocket scientists who will deliver our new health care. Oh, come on. Unbelievable.

They're hard to avoid. I was just trying to give an outsiders perspective to your rather generalized post. Come to think of it another quality of boomers is that they can dish it out but they can't take it.

I think I read somewhere once that the greatest generation gave birth to the worst generation.

Generation X has gone on to become well adjusted and successful. I’m one and know many who are however it’s Generation Y I would be worried about. They think they are smart simply because they grew up with technology yet they haven’t a clue. And don’t even ask them to work!

I have a friend like this. Now, her 24 year old son is a junkie. Of course, he blames it on her attitude toward drug use. He told her that she was the worst mother in the world and he might have been right, where drug use is concerned.

All the problems created by the boomers ?

Let's see: Socialist Security ? Nope. Lack of gold standard ? Nope. Cold war ? Nope. War in Viet Nam ? Nope. Welfare ? Nope. Income taxes ? Nope. Medicare ? Nope.

So true, but in this case, it was partially true. My friend bragged about going on her daughter's school trip to San Francisco and telling the kids that it was so cool to be there because it was the first time that she had seen San Francisco, straight.

I agree generally with your premise and I was raised among the ‘boomer’ generation.

After the Great Depression and WWII, the US experienced unimagined prosperity. Soldiers who came back had the GI Bill, they got college educations, could buy a house in the ‘burbs, etc. Life was wonderful.

They didn’t want their children to suffer the deprivations and sacrifices they had experienced, so, frankly, they spoiled ‘em rotten. oh, and Dr. Spock didn’t help much.

It may be an overgeneralization of an entire generation, but it WAS a significant segment of the Boomers who took over college campuses, changing the rules, all while on Daddy’s dime; they drove to places like Woodstock or to protests at the Pentagon in a car daddy bought ‘em. And it was Daddy’s allowance that let them ‘trip’ on whatever recreational drugs they may have enjoyed. Daddy never knew what hit him.

The sad part is that all of us are living with the aftermath.

I'm inclined to agree. The Depression and then WWII was a "double whammy" the likes of which no subsequent American generation has even come *close* to experiencing. And the desire to not see *their* kids (me included) suffer like that was so great that we were spoiled...*very* spoiled. In my household,at least, there was certainly "plenty" and we had lives that *neither* of my parents would have dared to *dream* of when they were kids. But there was also discipline. We *did* learn a degree of gratitude and humility.Unlike so many others, but by no means *all* of my generation.
