Swine Flu Could Kill 90,000: White House
NBC ^ | Mon, Aug 24, 2009

Posted on 08/24/2009 11:13:12 PM PDT by nickcarraway

Swine flu could infect half of the U.S. population and kill as many as 90,000, more than twice the number of casualties incurred in a typical seasonal flu.

The White House said in a report today that President Obama has been encouraged to push for quicker and more widespread vaccine production and appoint a staffer to be in charge of the pandemic, the Wall Street Journal reported.

"This isn't the flu that we're used to," said Kathleen Sebelius, U.S. Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.

Thirty to 50 percent of the country's population will be infected in the fall and winter. A typical seasonal flu infects about 36,000, the report said.

Influenza KILLS about 36,000 a year not infects that many. If it kills one half of one percent of the people who catch it then it probably infects somewhere in the neighborhood of 7,200,000 people or more a year.

I'm not against vaccinations, but I'm telling you, this is a scare tactic to get the government to buy mass quantities of vaccinations. Medical bailout....

Most of the dead will be from those that run from the clinics where these shots will be given.

Ping for your list Smokin’ Joe...

How many days till they start talking about mandatory vaccinations? Anyone taking bets?

I’m still pretty convinced my family had this thing back in the beginning of April. I’m praying that affords us some immunity...

"A typical seasonal flu infects about 36,000, the report said."

That must be an editing error on NBC's part. The seasonal flu kills about 36K every year, in the US alone. Last year was an unusually light year with (I think) just under 20K dying in the US.

Globally, seasonal flu can kill as many as 500K each year, with an average around 400K. FWIW.

Swine Flu Could Kill 90,000: White House

That sentence is incomplete. It should read...

Swine Flu Could Kill 90,000: White House could kill many more

I noticed the problem with those numbers, too. As you said; 36,000 die every year, and infection rates HAVE to be in the millions per year. It sure doesn’t help when the media, or whomever they are getting their facts from can’t even read the report they are reporting on correctly...

I won’t be surprised to see forced vaccinations at all, either. Sorry - can’t take that bet.

I believe our family had this in April as well - right after the Spring Breakers started arriving back from Mexico. We have a high school-aged son who got sick first and the rest of us followed, though none of us got nearly as sick as him. I talked to our pediatrician about this and she thought the fact that we might have had this already might give us some immunity, but there is really no way to know for sure.

Another friend of ours has a younger daughter that had a confirmed H1N1 case in July (NO idea where she got it), and the mother (in addition to our pediatrician) told me that the tell-tale sign is the very high fever, 103º+. She said that her daughter was sick, slept a LOT, had a deep hoarse cough, but that all in all, it wasn’t the sickest she had ever been.

I’d also like to add that this family is opting out of the vaccinations.

I am comforted in just knowing that a loving and caring person such as Sebelius is at the helm on this.

I mean, with her and Obama’s well known appreciation for the sanctity of life, even old folks and the unborn should feel good about all of this....

Scare tactics?

There's no guarantee the H1N1 flu shot is going to work.

I'm waiting for them to announce that they have 200 million doses of flu vaccine, so they're going to compassionately abort the other unlucky 100 million. It's all about choice, you know?

You just have to love public education that has left journalist who can't read and write. Since the government has done so well on holding costs down and providing quality public education, maybe we should let them take over another function in society. Let's have Public Health care too....

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

I had a flu like that back in April 2005. When I wasn't sleeping, I was drinking Throat Coat tea like it was going out of style and watching the Pope's funeral prep stuff on TV.

The reasons behind this push for mandatory vaccinations are far more sinister than just about bailout money.

If you can impact the population’s health, they are easier to control and or/persuade.

For instance, if there is an actual pandemic, and a large portion of the population sick ill, this will affect political involvement. Those whom are ignorant will want Big Brother to protect/save the population from further a greater outbreak.

Think of how this would affect our international relationships. Foreign leaders would not want Americans to spread their disease to foreign lands. How would that effect our economy.

our family has never been vaccinated w/the flu shot. I can’t remember a time when our children had the flu. In comparison, everyone I know whose had a flu shot, has had the flu AFTER being vaccinated. At least one of our relatives got sick w/the flu TWICE in two months. The implications should alarm every American.

The roots of Marxism is to destroy this country. Start a pandemic in this economic recession, and you’re almost there.

Part of the scare tactics (you need to let the government help), imho.
