Michael Jackson died of lethal levels of propofol, court documents show
latimes.com ^ | August 24, 2009 | latimes.com

Posted on 08/24/2009 12:21:00 PM PDT by Berlin_Freeper

L.A. County coroner's officials found lethal levels of the powerful anesthetic propofol after examining Michael Jackson's body, according to a search warrant affidavit unsealed today in Houston.

According to the search warrant, Jackson's doctor, Conrad Murray, told LAPD detectives that he had been treating Jackson for insomnia for about six weeks. He had been giving Jackson 50 milligrams of propofol every night using an intravenous line, according to the court records.

But Murray told detectives that he feared Jackson was forming an addiction and began trying to wean the pop star off the drugs. He lowered the dosage to 25 milligrams and mixed it with two other sedatives, lorazepam and midazolam. On June 23, two days before Jackson's death, he administered two medications and withheld the propofol.

On the morning Jackson died, Murray tried to induce sleep without using propofol, according to the affidavit. He said he gave Jackson valium at 1:30 a.m. When that didn't work, he said he injected lorazepam intravenously at 2 a.m. At 3 a.m., when Jackson was still awake, Murray administered midazolam.

Over the next few hours, Murray said he gave Jackson various drugs. Then at 10:40 a.m., Murray administered 25 milligrams of propofol after Jackson repeatedly demanded the drug, according to the court record.

You know you’re in trouble when you need general anesthesia to fall asleep at night. I’m surprised he hung on for so long.

Unless I missed something, none of the meds talked about are classified as “uppers”. Indeed, that is the reason that theses combinations can prove so lethal.

“Murray has already acknowledged obtaining and administering propofol to Jackson the morning that he died. In an interview with police, Murray told them that he left Jackson alone under the influence of the medication to make telephone calls to his Houston office and family members.

When he returned, he discovered Jackson was not breathing.”

Negligence x2.

Then at 10:40 a.m., Murray administered 25 milligrams of propofol after Jackson repeatedly demanded the drug, according to the court record.

That is not a lot of propofol. That is not a fatal dose or even near fatal. If the Coroners report said he had an overdose of Propofol, the 25mgs is not an accurate statement.

No, but that wasn't the poster's point. The point was that, if Jackson were not getting high ("uppers"), he would not need those heavy dosages of anesthetics ("downers") to go to sleep.

I, however, plead ignorance on such details. I do know that something is seriously wrong if you are taking a general anesthetic to go to sleep at night.

And with the cocktail of drugs supposedly given for insomnia all not working, I think that is an indication of just how buried in drug addiction Jackson had fallen.

What a sad statement. One who was once on top of the world and had everything, made a bunch of really bad choices (as is so sadly common in the industry), and died nothing more than a has-been druggie.

And worse - what did that so-called family of his actually do to help him? They are all a bunch of enablers who had more to gain by his death than by his continued life in the sewer.

Here's the money shot from the article (and Diprivan is the brand name of propofol):

Much of the investigation has focused on propofol — a drug typically administered by anesthesiologists during surgery — and whether Murray’s decision to give it to Jackson as a sleep aid outside a hospital setting reaches a level of negligence required for an involuntary manslaughter charge.

Here's part of the warning section from the prescribing information:

WARNINGS
For general anesthesia or monitored anesthesia care (MAC) sedation, DIPRIVAN Injectable Emulsion should be administered only by persons trained in the administration of general anesthesia and not involved in the conduct of the surgical/diagnostic procedure. Patients should be continuously monitored, and facilities for maintenance of a patent airway, artificial ventilation, and oxygen enrichment and circulatory resuscitation must be immediately available.

He was using the drug outside of its indicated use and in a way SPECIFICALLY warned about by the manufacturer. This guy could do hard time...a poster boy for practicing awful celebrity medicine (that is, give the celebs anything they ask for).

Well, I can’t imagine Jackson needing such a powerful drug as sleep medication if he wasn’t taking uppers to get through the day. It just doesn’t make sense otherwise. We’ll see what the full autopsy reports reveal.

One of the folks I know at the skeet range is a anesthesiologist and said this stuff is bad news if administered by a non-specialist, especially if resuscitation equipment is not present.

Not really. The LD50 (= lethal dose to 50% of the rats taking it) is 500mg/kg. This would be 25000 mg for a 50kg person. It is actually a very safe anesthetic as it sequesters to the fat tissue very quickly and thus the effect is not long. There is something wrong with the story Jacksons Dr. is telling.

I suspect that an IV bottle was hung and the pump for the IV was programed wrong and he had a whole bottle bolused (given quickly) without anyone watching him. You could achieve a fatal dose this way. If you bolused a bottle (1000 mg) you could achieve a very high level in the blood stream that could cause respiratory arrest. Although the total mg would not be = to the LD50 it could reach this level in the blood stream and thus cause death.

Most likely because the doctor isn't telling the truth about how much he gave him. This doc doesn't seem like the type to be overly concerned about Jackson developing an addiction. I'm thinking this was more like hang the bag, knock him out, go watch some TV. Then the Oh $#!+ moment when he stopped breathing.

Yes that is contributory but the coroners report indicated a fatal dose of propofol. If that is accurate there was a hell of lot more propfol given than the Dr. indicated.

Thanks, I’m only experienced with Scotch.

Oddly enough they both work on the same areas of the brain except Scotch is not near as potent but it does last longer. I recommend Scotch highly, it is cheaper and tastes good. Your anesthesiats advice about equipment to resuscitate is 100% correct. Anytime anesthesia is administered you MUST HAVE this gear. STICK TO SCOTCH but fine old Cognac should be considered! :)

Well, since the term “scotch” should only be used for whiskey distilled in Scotland, and Scotland is now a terrorist state, might I suggest some Kentucky bourbon? Knob Creek is my favorite. Or at least some Irish whiskey like Jameson’s or Bushmill’s? No more johnny walker for me.

I have a friend who is an anesthesiologist.
He jokingly told me that if MJ had hired him, he would still be alive today.
An anesthesiologist is the only person who can give these drugs safely- not a cardiologist.
He also told me that if you mix ketamine with less of the propofol, patients do not get into trouble with respiratory issues.
