If only there was some sort of mineral that we could dig from the ground and use to create gasoline. But alas, America has no such thing, even 200 miles away from her shores.

I wish they would all go belly up. Ethanol plays havoc on all our small engines. It’s junk fuel created by congress.

“The bailout is on it’s way.”

Naw, it was tossed overboard by the environmentalist crowd.

However, if you wanna start a sawgrass farm....

Ain’t that the truth.
I got this thick black stuff comin’ up outta the ground, but all it does is make it slippery when we’s out squirrel huntin’.

Most of the gas is junk now days. We run our small motors on half av gas and half car gas. They run much better and last longer. If you have to store a small gas motor run just av gas through it and leave it in the tank. The carb will not gum up and the motor will start right up the next time you need it.

Just wait until regular light bulbs are banned in 2014 and see all the mercury poisoning, snicker

Yeah...ethanol has been subsidized since it’s inception.

So this is a double dipping super bail out that they're wanting, since they already got subsidies for making ethanol, probably got a sweetheart deal to build the plant in the first place, and it wouldn't surprise me if there's some appropriations earmark that has their name on it.

Yep. It’s been entire billion dollar industry subsidized by our tax money since day one and we have not seen anything worthwhile from it except high food prices.

Most of that mercury poisoning will be in China, at the point of manufacture. The mercury exposure in the US will in general go down, as the energy savings reduces power plant emissions (not to mention other heavy metals commonly found in coal, such as nickel).

Yes. Butanol or cellulitic ethanol is the way to go.

We will all do what we have to do. The local airport is used to me showing up with my gas cans. I've always wondered what would happen if I took my wife's expedition down to be smogged with av gas in it...
The folks at the state would prob freak.

for the most part, federal law no longer requires
gasoline to contain oxygen. (some states may
require ethanol)

blame the oil companies

Maybe they could bottle it in 750ml containers...

All I know is that alcohol makes my car run rich (oxygenated fuel tricks the o2 sensors) and the 10% alcohol mix the gov’t forces on me costs more and reduced my mileage by 15%. It’s worse for the boaters who are losing engines as the alcohol eats their (fiberglass) fuel tanks and gums up the carbs and such..

*****************************************
What part do the oil companies play in mandating this ?? They don’t want alcohol ,, it makes their distribution difficult , adds complexity and wouldn’t they rather sell 100% gasoline than 90%?

I was unable to find info on federal mandates on this , perhaps I need a “magic” keyword .. most of what I found was state mandates with references to federal EPA mandates (unfortunately the specific regs were not cited).. this still seems to be fully in force..

Had to be sarcasm , either that or somebody really doesn’t understand that powerplants run hot 24*7 (except for the gas turbines used for peak demand) .. you don’t heat several millions gallons of water and let it cool off overnight when demand slumps.. There will be no savings at the powerplant level.

No...not at all. The amount of mercury in the bulbs is much less than it used to be, and will likely continue to go down. Meanwhile, power plants release mercury when they produce energy. The energy savings from compact fluorescent bulbs over incandescents results in a net reduction in mercury, and except for breakages, the mercury in the bulbs is contained, whereas the power-plant emissions are in our homes, schools, etc.

I'm not big on government mandates, but that doesn't mean I kneejerk and ignore reality. I guarantee that if the government banned these bulbs, many FReepers who are against them would be out there touting their benefits!

neid, look here ...
http://stevebuyer.house.gov/gaspricesaddressed.htm

(I am not in this guy’s district,
it was the first usable info
that showed up on a Yahoo search)

(near the beginning)
Changing gasoline blends are disrupting the supply chain. Switching from winter to summer seasonal blends traditionally causes price spikes this time of year. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 ends the federally mandated oxygenate requirement for some gasoline blends bla bla bla bla
........................................................
my comments are, oil companies can sell...
gasoline that meets all specs, with no alcohol, OR,
gasoline that meets spec when later blended with alcohol,
called RBOB.

THEIR choice.

***If only there was some sort of mineral that we could dig from the ground and use to create gasoline.***

There is such a thing, two types. A gooey kind and form of rock type.
Problem, is they are not replacable. We must not use them because they are not replacable!

We must lock them up and look at them because they are not replacable! Billions of tons of it for centuries of use but we can’t use it because it is not replacable!

And what we do use we must stop because it is not replacable!

True, dat. Petroleum is made from dead plants, and Earth ran out of dead plants like 65 million years ago.
