BAGRAM, Afghanistan — Military commanders with the NATO mission in Afghanistan told President Barack Obama's chief envoy to the region this weekend that they did not have enough troops to do their job, pushed past their limit by Taliban rebels who operated across borders.

The commanders emphasized problems in southern Afghanistan, where Taliban insurgents continue to bombard towns and villages with rockets despite a new influx of U.S. troops, and in eastern Afghanistan, where the father-and-son-led Haqqani network of militants has become the main source of attacks against U.S. soldiers and their Afghan allies.

I say Obama declares victory and pulls out -- but first strikes a deal with the Taliban that they won't take over the country for some amount of time so that, when the takeover occurs, it will more easily be seen as a failure of the Afghan government rather than any immediate fallout from the precipitous American withdrawal.

Or, Obama could fully engage, increase the troop levels, and put serious Rules of Engagement in place that would allow us to actually make progress. I see this as a very -- *ahem* -- unlikely scenario.

You can’t buy an Afghani, but you can rent him!

Many have said Afghanistan has never been conquered.

Afghanistan has been conquered by almost everyone who has tried.

Nobody has wanted to keep it.

This time I bet we’ll put in a bunch more American troops in an attempt at “Afghanization of the War”.

Democrats are more obsessed with buzzwords and labels than winning.

It will work about as well as Vietnamization.

Or he may take the simple way out - declare all the hostile Taliban now have permanent US Visas , free health care and in state tuition, and can apply for citizenship if they will promise not to open carry AK-47's.

Small ground units supported by lots of big air units.

Instead of take and hold

take and destroy...repeat as necessary.
