Charles Davenport: Too many fatherless children

Sunday, August 23, 2009
By Charles Davenport Jr.

When a young man was shot to death three weeks ago at Hickory Trails in Greensboro, this newspaper's editorial board declared the broad-daylight killing "unacceptable." Rightly so. "Also inexcusable," the editors continued, "is the neglect by the institutions responsible for the safety and welfare of the residents of this public housing complex."

Those who dig deeper into this and other senseless killings, said the editors, will find that "the stories get darker: gangs, drugs, guns and fear."

Nudged and nearly trampled by an unacknowledged elephant in the room, I clipped and saved the editorial. With all due respect to the editorial board, the institution most "responsible for the safety and welfare of the residents" of Hickory Trails is neither the Greensboro Housing Authority nor the Greensboro Police Department; rather, it is the families themselves -- fathers, in particular. The hot breath on the back of your neck is from the elephant in the room: the absence of fathers, not only in public housing communities, but in most poverty-stricken areas, in Greensboro and elsewhere.

More often than not, those who investigate serious crimes uncover an ugly truth swept under the rug: About 70 percent of the perpetrators hail from single-parent households. "The stories get darker," indeed. Mentioning the cultural catastrophe brought about by single-parent households may be "insensitive," but ignoring the source of the problem will solve nothing.

The inevitable consequence of fatherless households, and fatherless public housing complexes, is "gangs, drugs, guns and fear." Neighborhoods overrun by drug-dealing, cap-busting thugs are neighborhoods deficient in fathers.

This is not to say that it is impossible for a single mother to successfully raise children. Many kids from fatherless households do well in school and steer clear of trouble. But the deck is stacked against them. Statistics on the matter are indisputably grim and render obvious the ideal environment in which to raise children: a stable marriage, in the presence of both biological parents.

There are innumerable sources available from which statistics on the children of single-parent households may be derived. Some of you prefer liberal sources, such as President Obama, who said the following in his Father's Day remarks last year: "Children who grow up without a father are five times more likely to live in poverty and commit crime, nine times more likely to drop out of schools, and 20 times more likely to end up in prison."

Some of you prefer conservative sources, and Ann Coulter certainly qualifies. In her latest book, "Guilty," she writes that, "Seventy percent of teenage births, dropouts, suicides, runaways, juvenile delinquents, and child murderers involve children raised by single mothers." Coulter cites a 1990 study by the Progressive Policy Institute which found that, "after controlling for single motherhood, the difference between black and white crime rates disappeared." (When Coulter presented these and other facts to the public policy experts that host "The View," she was attacked and ridiculed. No one attempted to debunk her evidence.)

Political correctness trumps everything.

We’re not allowed to talk about how the culture of illegitimacy has been bad for society. We’re not allowed to talk about how it’s bad that young people nowadays don’t equate parenthood and marriage and adult responsibilities all together. We’re not allowed to talk about some of the difficulties involved with single parents, most of whom are women.

We’re not supposed to discuss a lot of these issues because to even raise certain questions will label one as racist/sexist/bigoted.

So naturally, with this shooting, we aren’t allowed to talk about the upbringing of children or their family circumstances. Instead we are limited to decrying the lack of security around a housing project as the only cause of such a tragedy.

How dare he insinuate that single mothers are to blame for the worlds ills. They are only doing what they have to do. Sometimes they have to kick the fathers out of the house in order to qualify for assistance.

/sarc

It seems to me that big brother is a horrible father.

this newspaper’s editorial board declared the broad-daylight killing “unacceptable.”
Not necessarily, some people just need killing.

The government will outlaw smoking in certain areas “for the sake of the children”, enact seatbelt laws “for the children”, ban vending machines at school “for the sake of the children”, provide abortions for underage girls “for their sake”, etc. Yet what is most probably the most damaging factor in a child’s life, the lack of active, involved fathers not is not only swept under the rug but heralded as quite the societal accomplishment.

During the campain, Mr Obama said a young girl should not be ‘punished’ with a baby.

Nor should she be rewarded !

It might be time for Orphan’s homes to be re-established.

If a woman( or the father) cannot show proof of income and stable enviroment, the child goes into custody. Not an auntie or a grandmother(unless they meet standards). And not a foster home; but an orphage, where the child can be put up for adoption, with no strings to the mother.

If the father is known, and cannot provide a stable home, he will be obligated to provide support through the courts according to his income; but will never be reconsidered for custody.

The outrage at these statements will bein in 3..2...1..

I just finished GUILTY today. It is must reading for serious conservatives.

It'll have to wait until I'm done reading Treason.

Who knew Joe McCarthy was a) right and b) correct and c) nobody's bully and d) not the scum of the earth? His detractors, however, were all of both c) and d), and have persisted in being lying SOS's to this day.

Which goes to one of the main points of this article about fatherlessness: Liberals have so disfigured the country with their bullyragging, lying, and political oppression, it's doubtful we'll ever be able to repair all the damage they've done.

O Contrare!!! Newt Gingrich actually proposed government funded orphanages where the child is raised entirely by the school. His reasoning is that the child must be totally removed from the bad environment so they can be free from violence and be able to concentrate on getting an education. If the US can cleave several young generations from broken homes so they can grow up educated and morally well grounded, we might be able to break the cycle of depravity that exists in our inner city schools. Unfortunately our nation is broke, and its leaders too PC to make such a concept work.

Orphaned male adolescents go on killing sprees if mature males aren’t around.

...Between 1992 and 1997, young orphaned musth male African elephants that had been introduced to Pilanesberg, South Africa, killed more than 40 white rhinoceros. The killing ceased after six older male elephants were introduced from the relatively normal Kruger Park population...

If “bastards are as bastards do” - can one conclude that de facto bastards will act like actual bastards?

If so, America is in a heap of trouble.

“Guilty” is about current events; it provides great information about the press’ complicity with the whining self-victimized liberals. I liked it better than her other books.....and that’s saying something.

That's the problem. Most of the baby daddies just disappear and father a few more.

They can't stay with the mothers, cause then they would have to support their kids.

The liberals want it just the way it is, it's a big part of their voter base.

Jesse Lee Peterson recognizes what is happening to his fellow black citizens in the inner cities.

He said it is just like a third world country.

Same ol' same ol' politicians and blacks (sharpton, jesse jackson, black caucus etc) promoting slavery just like the Africans a few hundred years ago did by raiding neighboring tribes and kidnapping their fellow Africans and shipping them over here.

Keep them on the plantation, throw them some bones (welfare) and they will continue to vote democrat.

I did not say this kid needed killing.
I took exception to “this newspaper’s editorial board declared the broad-daylight killing “unacceptable.”
Like it is better to do your killing in the wee hours of the night.
And yes, some people need killing.
A few years ago a bully in a small mid west town got shot in broad daylight. Many witnesses and every one refused to testify.
Seems the bully had been crapping on folks for years.
All said, “ some folks just need killing”.
