BERLIN (AP) - German prosecutors are investigating about 100 professors across the country on suspicion they took bribes to help students get their doctoral degrees, authorities said Saturday.

The investigation is focused on the Institute for Scientific Consulting, based in Bergisch Gladbach, just east of Cologne, which allegedly acted as the intermediary between students and the professors, said Cologne prosecutor's spokesman Guenther Feld.

Feld confirmed reports of the investigation in both Focus magazine and the Neue Westfaelische newspaper, but would not give further details.

The Institute for Scientific Consulting did not answer its phone Saturday.

According to the two publications, students paid between euro4,000 to euro20,000 ($5,700 to $28,500) to the company, which promised to help them get their doctorate degrees through its extensive contacts within university faculties.

No wonder the Volga Germans from Russia homeschool their children.

What you will find eventually...is that pay raises in the professor pay scale...really don’t exist like they do in the US. So this guy is working for years and years...with decent pay...not 4-star pay...and will be getting a 4-star retirement.

I wonder if this has any tie in to Global Warming research? Give the politicians the results they want and get rich.

Ah, the integrity of modern science.

I wonder.... would the peer review panels catch this and be the heroes?

Or are they part of the fraud?

Inquiring minds want to know.

At one time in the distant past a “higher” education may have meant just that, an education to elevate the character of the student but since it has become a crude party pass why not cheat?

Peer review? That depends on the peers being honest and people of integrity. But would a professor risk a cushy position by being a whistleblower? Against a “fellow”?

Among evolutionists, who didn't know of Kettlewell’s peppered moth gimmicks (to put the most generous face on it) but still cited it as a shining example of evolution?
And defend it yet?

All PhDs too, I would imagine. The inquiring minds are not likely to be found in academia.

Wow, look at all the FR liberals rushing to defend “science”!

You know, like they swarm on GGG’s posts about the flip side of the coin...

science without the corrupt peer review fraud.

Maybe they’re talking to each other and being just as boring as when they post on FR.

It was not clear whether the students knew that bribes were being paid.

Plausible deniability. Always a comforting refuge.

So far, evidence points to the involvement of about 100 professors across the country spanning "numerous disciplines," Feld was quoted as saying.

But, surely no disciplines to be included among the ‘hard’ sciences. Oh no, Fluffy! (not you, metmom, Fluffy). Say it isn’t so.

Anyone who has ever been through this process has no trouble believing this could be true. You look at some of vapid useless crap that is accepted and you have to wonder.
