As expected, the King of Pop steps aside for the King of Country as George Strait's "Twang" replaces Michael Jackson's enduring "Number Ones" as the best selling album in the country.
Strait's new set sold 155,000 copies according to Nielsen SoundScan, earning the country legend his fifth No. 1 album on the Billboard 200. "Twang" follows in the footsteps of Strait's 1997 album "Carrying Your Love With Me," 2004's "50 Number Ones," 2005's "Somewhere Down In Texas" and 2008's "Troubadour."
The last time one of Strait's studio albums opened with less than 100,000 was in 1994, when "Lead On" started with 56,000. It's also his 23rd No. 1 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart -- extending his lead as the act with the most toppers on the list.
Strait also tops the all-encompassing Top Comprehensive Albums chart, where Jackson had reigned for six non-consecutive weeks. The King of Pop's "Number Ones" falls to No. 2, shifting 80,000 copies (down 19%).

YES!! Love it!
1) Country, and
2) Western.
Not really a country fan but George Strait can do no wrong.
I like this one.

George Strait never had a so ugly its cool haircut like Travis Tritt. Nor did he write songs as “manly” as Haggard or even Tim McGraw have. Nevertheless, I’ll take him over 90% of the feminized wusses that Nashville has been pushing on us over the past 20 years. Its like most C&W these days is written for lonely women.
bttt
Bump.
I cannot stand Kenny Chesny. Maybe that's why I really don't listen to country.
I love Merle Haggard, though.
1. He is still married to his high school sweetheart.
2. Is a real cowboy with his Strait roping events.
3. He lost his daughter in a car accident, but came back from that tragedy without drugs or booze.
Kind of a Frank Sinatra type of guy without all the negatives.
Great!
Along with all those positives he’s easy on the eyes.
In all honesty, I think he would make a good brother or next door neighbor. I wonder if I could adopt him as either of those. LOL
[I think he would make a good brother or next door neighbor.]
Either one would work for me.
Strait must be a racist?
That’s our man, George!!
“3. He lost his daughter in a car accident, but came back from that tragedy without drugs or booze. “
I just learned about this a couple weeks ago. It happened in 1986 when he was already a pretty big star. George never wore his pain on his shoulder and kept on going. He set up a foundation in his daughters honor to raise money for childrens charities. Very commendalble.
I always loved his music. I was only about 11 when he had his first big hit eith “Unwound”. I’ve been a fan ever since. Great to see George still on top after all these years.
If I could pick two country music singers to be my next door neighbors it would be George Strait and Vince Gill.
Do you really like Western? Like the Sons of the Pioneers and the Sons of the San Joaquin? I love it. I wish this old fella had clips on his website so you could hear his work:
He sings every part (except for duets with a female vocalist) and plays every instrument. What’s more, he picks reasonably obscure songs to cover instead of just doing “Cool Water” and “Streets of Laredo” like every other independent Western artist with a CD on the internet. I think I’ll make a point of listening to Trail of Memories tomorrow. It’s truly wonderful stuff.
No, I ain’t being paid! :-)
Sounds good to me.
I could put up with Reba McEntire and Martina McBride too.
and if anyone does country dance, you can dance to George's music...he does a great two step and a cha-cha..
Way to go George!
It took sixty years before I finally got the message. There’s something about being able to understand the words and being left with a melody to hum.
Besides it was Michael who gave himself that title, hadn't had a hit in years, and he's dead.
Long live the new king.
Gee thanks. You save me a trip to billboard.com.
