According to the mainstream media, carrying a gun to a protest is just plain crazy, even if perfectly legal. What’s more, it’s indicative of the toxic, hate-filled atmosphere filling conservative protests of President Obama and his plans for health care reform.

“Hardball” host Chris Matthews and his daytime colleagues at MSNBC, for example, have their used air time to marvel at what would possess an average American citizen to go to a rally near where President Obama is speaking with a gun.

But the media reaction was markedly different nine years ago when a group of Black Panthers marched on the Texas Republican Party’s state convention on June 2000 brandishing AK-47s. Indeed, that incident itself was chalked up as then-Gov. Bush’s fault by none other than then-MSNBC "Equal Time" co-host Paul Begala.

Mock them! When I saw the pictures of those two panthers in front of the voting place it wasn't intimidating, it was laughable. I mean really, what are they going to do, assault me in front of my family? (we bring even the little kids when we vote so they can see democracy in action) We should find some friendly conservative African-Americans, have them dress up like panthers and let the kids line up to have their picture taken with the “scary black men.” Okay, you all try to look real mean, now smile kids, click.

I was at that convention. There was one confrontation. Many of the Black Panthers that were marching were convicted felons, meaning it was illegal for them to possess a firearm.

YES! and now 9 years later, we finally know about it ONLY because of the internet.

these people are to be outright defended against. In my view, they are cowards when alone, but act big&bad when they are in a gang... and with the guys showing up in AZ with guns, perhaps they sent a subtle note that we not only are not afraid of the gangs, but they best think twice about not fearing us..

Exactly!!! Nine years ago I had cable TV with a full range of channels (including FoxNews) and I still don’t remember ever seeing this.

I am soooooo thankful we have alternative media these days.
