PHOENIX (AP) - President Barack Obama took on both the defense establishment and freespending lawmakers on Monday, saying they were draining the defense budget with "exotic projects." "If Congress sends me a defense bill loaded a bunch of pork, I will veto it," he declared in a speech to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He accused members of Congress of using the defense budget to protect jobs back home, including on wasteful projects he said were diverting money needed for U.S. military forces battling everything from nuclear weapons to "18th century style piracy and 21st century cyber threats."

It’s only Pork when it’s the Dept. of Defense. How many people know that the Dept. of HHS has a budget 2 and 1/2 times the defense budget?
If you watched zero’s address to the VFW, you would almost feel sorry for him. Clapping was very muted and it almost always started from a presumable plant near the podium (Note when parts of the speech are repeated.) but, given zero’s propensity for running-at-the-mouth when there’s an open microphone and a camera in front of him, he’s oblivious to anybody else’s views but his own.
He’s actually not wrong when he says many defense projects are pork for states and many times projects are continued that the defense department doesn’t want. In fact, the base closure panels of years ago only succeeded by taking the decision making process out of the hands of politicians. I say that as a retired veteran and Obama is not the first president to point this out.
Having said all that, I seriously doubt he would say the same thing about social welfare programs.

Of course there’s a lot of defense project pork. But, regretably, Obama is the last person in the world to straighten that out. He would just make sure that all the pork went straight to Democrats, like he did with the GM dealerships.
I completely agree with you that he has singled out Defense as an area he cares nothing about to try and make points about his fiscal responsibility. I also agree that he wouldn’t care about pork in other areas of the budget and other posters point out the stimulus bill was laden with pork.
Translation of Obama’s remarks from a vet who has SEEN the waste at the Pentagon up close and wants it stopped as much as anyone.
“OK, you guys at the Pentagon, knock off all that expensive stuff for what that outdated Constitution calls ‘provide for the common defense’ so I can have those billions to send to my friends on the welfare dole and to my pals on the left at ACORN, etc.”

Notice what the "big ticket" itels are: operations, maintenance, and personnel. Now, consider that the DOD budget accounts for only 21% of the Federal budget and about 4% of GDP. It is dwarfed by Medicare and Social Security. Procurement accounts for 20% of the budget, and whatever pork lies therein is the result of Congressmen putting their district's interests before that of the nation.

Keep in veteran’s health care and active duty pay, because those will help retain idiots who support and vote for him. All else is pork. Those excesses can be added to the billions already given to ACORN, in order to further the one party system, and to pay expenses when the 2nd Constitutional Convention is called later on.

Yes, but for how long? I'm keeping a very close and worried eye on Afghanistan in the fear the situation there will go even further south due to the "dead head" horse president. He has been treated with open contempt in the Arab world - people won't even shake his hand in the receiving line - and we know al Qaeda only respects the stronger horse.
