From 'Yes, We Can' to 'No! Don't!'(Obama...has united the Republican Party)

>-snip-<

What a disaster this health-care debate is. It strains, stresses and pierces, it unnecessarily agitates and is doomed to be the cause of further agitation. Who doubts the final bill will be something between a pig in a poke and three-card Monte?

Which is too bad, because our health-care system actually needs to be made better. ***

There are smart and experienced people who say whatever the mess right now, the president will get a bill of some sort because he has the brute numeric majority. A rising number say no, this thing has roused such ire he won't get much if anything. I don't know, but this is true: If he wins it, will be a victory not worth having. It will have cost too much. It has lessened the thing an admired president must have from the people, and that is trust.

It is divisive save in one respect. The Obama White House has done the near impossible: It has united the Republican Party. Social conservatives, economic conservatives, libertarians—they're all against the health-care schemes as presented so far. They're shoulder-to-shoulder at the barricade again. ***

The president's town-hall meeting on Tuesday in Portsmouth, N.H., was supposed to be an antidote to the fractious town halls with members of Congress the past weeks. But it was not peaceful, only somnolent. Actually it was a bit of a disaster. It looked utterly stacked, with softball after softball thrown by awed and supportive citizens. When George W. Bush did town halls like that—full of people who'd applaud if he said tomorrow we bring democracy to Saturn—it was considered a mark of manipulation and insecurity. And it was. So was Mr. Obama's.

Don’t fall for this false sense of security folks. This is the new talking points. Noonan and the beltway conservatives are going to declare Obamacare defeated in which it’ll be passed when nobody’s looking. Remember that Noonan has no credibility. She voted for the Kenyan.

Gosh, did Peggy forget to drink the koolaid for this column??? :-)

She's right on a lot of points for a change! Especially the one about HolyO "winning" a victory by sheer numbers of demmies in Congress--it will be a

Pyrrhic victory: a victory with devastating cost to the victor.

I predict that HolyO loses MAJOR political 'capital' over this whole debacle!

United the Rep party to do what? Recognize that a collapsing financial system is not compatible with ANY spending program? Agree with Dims that socialist modeled Healthcare Co-ops are viable? Jump on a contrived, false climate change initiative? Only a few Dems and a few more in the Rep party have a clue...they are not in adequate numbers, and a frightened Ob may try to avoid the potential results of a 2010 election season, given the ‘AWAKENING’ by the public.

I agree. Any bill will just be an incremental step towards nationalized healthcare. Some insurance reform, tort reform, Medicare/Medicaid oversite—a few tweeks to the system is all that is needed. NO government involvement in our healthcare! If anything, we need limited government and a dialing down of Federal Government power.

If she thinks Obama united the Republican party, then, perhaps she knows that Obama also united a lot of democrats with republicans against this horrendous bill. This has little to do with uniting the republican party, but everything to do with the potential destruction of the United States, no matter what your political standing is. RINOS will still be RINOS, in most other areas, and that is what’s dividing the party.

We need 3rd Party—we need Sarah Palin to lead the new party—we need Americans to stand with her to run for office or support the new party what ever it turns out to be. We need unity and a new renewed idea of what it is to be an American. We need patriots. Too long the special interests and lobbies have ruled over us.

I don’t have a name for this new party but I have some ideas about what it should stand for.
1. The Constitution.
2. An end to Muli-Cultural nonsense.
3. An end to Secularism cutting out God.
4. An end to Abortion—total ban on Late term abortion.
5. No to illegals! All illegals!
6. A tight—air tight border with Mexico.
7. A strong Army, Navy and Air Force.
8. Drill, drill, drill—off shore etc...
9. Atomic Power—Build Build Build.
10. More refineries.
11. More use of Coal. Make it as clean as we can.
12. An end to Global warming power grab.
13. End Public TV Broadcasting.
14. End to all “Czars”.
15. A New Branch of the Military— The Border Guard.
16. End Federal mandates for local schools.
17. No welfare—only workfare. Everyone gets a chance but not a handout.

Screw that "party" nonsense - the ones who united were the people, the average Joes and Janes of America, which counts for a hell of a lot more than any "party". The government has set itself as an open and blatant adversary against the people, so it's up to us to do the heavy lifting and take care of business. As far as I'm concerned the Democrat/Republican/Libertarian/Etc party biz is over and done. You either identify as a Statist or a Freeman, with little to nothing in between.

The GOP is going to find some bi-partisan solution, which means they’ll find a way to get taxpayer money to their own special interest groups and try to sell it to the rest of us unwashed as a good bill. Once again, the GOP will snatch defeat from the jaws of a conservative victory. A pox on both their houses!

The president seemed like a man long celebrated as being very good at politics—the swift rise, the astute reading of a varied electorate—who is finding out day by day that he isn't actually all that good at it.

Yeah, Peggy, celebrated by a bunch of fawning and cooing, guilt-ridden white people and a bunch of minorities who were cheering the homey, no matter he said or did.

But Peggy's not the only one now in the process of pulling back, putting a little distance between themselves and the anointed (by them) one, trying to salvage whatever credibility they have left before it gets even worse.

But just know, tiresome one, that there a lot of us non-elites around who had this dude pegged 18 - 24 months ago, when we heard his cotton candy, hope and change nonsense for the first time or two, just about the time we saw the first one or two fainting groupies being carried away from the revival meeting.

You're not enlightening anyone these days, Peggy. You're just trying to salvage whatever credibility you have left.

They are standing on the sidelines with only a few exceptions while Americans are the ones confronting their politicians of all parties and facing down Obama’s thugs.

Sorry, have no interest in what this woman says. Probably shouldn’t have opened the post because of that, but I didn’t notice the name by the headline at first.

I would like to see a political party with such principles.

The tough thing is that, in our system, a 3rd party or minor political party has minimal clout. Michael Medved talks about this sometimes on his show. He says that since we have an entrenched two party system, that conservatives need to re-group always within Republican primaries to nominate more conservative candidates. Otherwise, conservative candidates will get only a small fraction of the vote, if they are running as 3rd party or independent candidates.

The Libertarian party has been around for many years, but has won very few if any seats in state legislatures or any local offices. I don’t think any Libertarians have been elected to the U.S.Congress. And as Medved would say, even if some Libertarians got elected to Congress, the two party system guarantees that they would be a small minority.

Realistically a new conservative party would have to devote many years to building a political organization to compete with the established parties.

I mostly agree with your comment. However, I disagree with you about being upset with what the Republicans are doing in this situation. See my post here to see why I believe it is RIGHT for the bulk of Republicans to stand on the sidelines, and let the American people who now HAVE the ball to just get out of the way and let them run with it.

Perhaps you will reconsider their current stance.
