Al Gore buys them. So do the Grateful Dead, Hollywood celebrities and, increasingly, many climate-conscious executives and consumers.
For those who travel the world by air but don't want to contribute to global warming in the process, compensating with so-called carbon offsets has become a fashionable solution.
The sale of these credits for environmentally friendly activities, investments in everything from wind energy to carbon stored in forests, jumped from $97 million in 2006 to $331 million worldwide in 2007 about a quarter of it in the United States.
But one global green leader does not offset its travel, even though its employees regularly fly around the world warning about the dangers of climate change and devising strategies to combat it. That leader is the state of California.
"As a state employee, you are put in an awkward situation," said Tony Brunello, deputy secretary of climate change and energy at the Natural Resources Agency who has traveled to Europe, South America and Indonesia.
"We are trying to push (emissions) reductions," Brunello said. "It would help us, as state workers, to have some clear direction on what you do and you don't offset."
His quandary hit home after a recent trip to Brazil for which no offsets were purchased. When The Bee asked about that, Brunello decided to buy them himself.
"Do we need a policy for how this stuff works?" asked Sandy Cooney, a spokesman for the resources agency. "Absolutely, yes because one does not exist."

So, what’s the carbon tax for these forest fires?
Carbon offsets result in no carbon reducstions.
None.
It’s a money laundering exchange scam on par with the other liberal money scams,
Meanwhile some Northern Ca. moron throws a lit cigarette butt out the window and causing huge, raging forest fires.
Gotta be spewing tons of carbon into the atmosphere. Try tallying up those carbon credits. What lunacy!
Exactly - and when they are set by illegals, does their country pay the tax??
The farce of carbon indulgences.
remember whenever ppl attack America for using more energy than the rest of the world, remind them to blame New York and California
“So, whats the carbon tax for these forest fires?”
forest fires??
85,000 Acre California Fire, still burning caused by Mexican Drug Cartels - confirmed!

I still think that the concept of, “Go ahead and pollute. Just pay us to do it!” is kind of wacky. Are these pinheads in the business to “save the planet” or just make money to provide “green jobs?” Smells “fishy” to me. Algore and his “celebraties” can continue purchasing “carbon credits” if it gives them warm fuzzies but don’t shove this bullsh*t down my throat.
Exactly correct.
Well, let’s see here...
First, they can travel all they want to because there is no global warming. Second, they can buy all the carbon offsets they want to, because offsets are just phony feel-good mumbo-jumbo anyhow. And finally, it doesn’t much matter what state employees do because they probably won’t have a job much longer anyhow.
That seems to about cover it!
I just can't believe the insanity of an article talking about how public employees are confused about buying offsets for their travel - got a better idea - YOU'RE FIRED. There, problem solved.
There. Fixed it.
I’ll sell them Carbon Indulgences - as many as they would like to buy.
I’m having a special on carbon credits this weekend. Two for the price of one. Hurry, they will not last. I take PayPal: make your purchase at carboncreditos@showmethemoney.com. Minimum purchase of $500 (remember, that will get you $1000 in carbon credits).
And, if you’ll order in the next hour, you can purchase your credits in your choice of colors. “Color” carbon credits is a recent enhancement, and not everyone has realized the extra value there. Green has been very popular, followed by light blue.
AlGores a bloody genius for this one.
American’s are too smart to fall for this nonsense...I thought.
They say that they are "broke" but they have the money for this nonsense? That ain't broke.
What they need is a good controller. One that knows how to budget. I suggest a middle class parent with at least three kids who has no debt except for the mortgage.
Those people know how to cut costs.
The really scarey part is ...we’ll be bailing these carbon credit buying bozos out one of the days after the carbon credit “bubble” bursts.
this is sign number 6 that your state is too far gone to even see "normal" again.
Who sells these carbon offset credits and what do they provide in return for them? I can understand a zero sum game for industry to buy emmissions credits, but what do citizens, celebrities and others get by buying them?
Love, peace and understanding.
Here we go. Next will be taxpayer money used to buy these scam offsets so that states execs can fly around with a clear conscience.
People of California:
Have many trees. Am holding all hostage. Bulldozer at the ready. If you don’t send me $10 bazillion I’m going to start pushing them over one-by-one, put them in a big pile and BURN them.
Ah, HA, HA, HA!
Il Gore (Al’s evil step brother)
Since carbon dioxide is not a pollutant I would think this is the only intelligent decision made by the state gov.
Exactly!
Al Gore, the businessman.
Since his election defeat, apart from winning a Nobel Peace prize and an Academy Award, hes landed numerous $175,000 speaking gigs and his stock in Google and Apple that he received as a board advisor is reportedly worth nearly $35 million. Plus hes started a carbon credit trading company and his networth is supposedly north of $100 million!

Al Gore has made $100 million + from his scare campaign on Global Warming.
One of those places would be here (Milpitas[1]). It's been a really cold summer, kind of like last year and the year before ...
[1] Low of 57 this morning according to my dashboard weather thingie.

Actually, I would like to know WTF californians are paying state employees to go around the world trying to influence foriegn policy for anyway. Since when was that a state responsibility? SOunds like misuse of state tax funds to me.

Do these people realize how nutty they come off? Sheesh!
They get to feel cool and self-righteous.
Laughs.
And laughs.
And laughs.
When libs say “tax carbon”, they’re not talking about themselves. :)
Can’t wait to see how much of a pinch this will put in the budget problems of Ca....
Less than $40 worth of ‘carbon credits’ were sold at the Democrat Convention in Denver, where they nominated NObama to be President!!!!
The message doesn’t seem to resonate with the rank & file, eh?
Does anyone know if the California emissions footprint from the reference includes the annual wildfires ... and if not, what are the estimated annual wildfire emissions in California?
Many thanks.
"Do we need a policy for how this stuff works?" asked Sandy Cooney, a spokesman for the resources agency. "Absolutely, yes -- because one does not exist."That's appropriate, since the threat from CO2 doesn't exist.
I’d love to find out how to sell offsets. Looks like a profitable business and I have no problem taking money from idiots.
See, this is what happens when you elect a RINO to run things...
Interesting. I’ll have to be on the lookout for that next time I travel.
I don’t see water vapor in the charts.
It’s the largest component of fossil fuel combustion.
