The Countrywide Senators

As the old Irish toast goes, may your sins be judged by the Senate ethics committee. Actually that's not an Irish toast but it must be the fervent hope of every politician who received a "Friend of Angelo" loan from former Countrywide Financial CEO Angelo Mozilo. Late last week the six Senators on the ethics panel dismissed complaints against Senators Kent Conrad and Chris Dodd with a mere admonishment about the appearance of impropriety.

The three Republican and three Democratic Senators say they conducted an exhaustive probe and inspected 18,000 pages of documents. They say they found "no substantial credible evidence as required by Committee rules" that the Senators received mortgage rates or services that weren't commonly available to the public, and thus did not violate the Senate gift ban.

You do know the republican attorney over the committee overseeing this got a loan from them. Not to mention many others.

To this day I see no logical reason for either the Senate or the House to have any sort of “ethics” committee. They are either used for partisan attacks against the other side, or they give out “get out of jail free” cards when their own are in trouble.

Chris Dodd is a *CRIMINAL*!

And the senators that exonerated him are Accessories After the Fact.

All should be given a striped view of the world for the next 10 to 20 years.

Think of the difference in the treatment given to them and the treatment given to mere mortal citizens who have made an error interpreting the byzantine tax code.

Did they ask Senator Dodd if he was actually repaying his loan?

This is a case of everyone having a spoon in the soup pot so who ate the most is meaningless. The facts remain that both side are equally dirty in this mess. It's more I will not go after your people and you don't go after mine.

There was testimony that they THOUGHT that they were getting preferential rates.

Whether they got conned or not, the point is that they THOUGHT they were getting a special only to friends rate.

That makes them guilty, whether they actually got a better rate or not.

So the “ethics” committee is doing the old “It depends on what the meaning of “is” is routine.”

What we need is an actual independent committee to investigate congressional corruption. DOJ cannot it is full of political appointments. DOJ won’t even uphold voting laws. The committee should not be appointed by congress, or executive branch. It should be appointed by the judiciary with 10 yr terms. Purpose of the committee would be to investigate executive branch, and congress. Would be very interesting to see, what independent committee would have found.

I wonder if a committee of State Attorney Generals would be a body which might actually perform a credible job at policing House and Senate ethics issues?

If not them, what about a committee of Appellate Court Judges?
