Lockheed's F-35 may be flying into budget storm
Jim Wolf ^ | 8/12/09 | Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon may want to consider scaling back Lockheed Martin Corp's multinational F-35 fighter program, the costliest-ever U.S. arms-purchase plan, as part of stepped-up budget belt-tightening, an analysis by an influential research group said.

The private Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, several of whose one-time experts are now serving in senior Obama administration jobs, cited the F-35 as just one example of programs ripe for review by the Department of Defense during its once-every-four-year, top-to-bottom re-assessment now under way.

Ahhhh, now I get it. Kill the F-22 and then say we don't have enough money for the F-35 either.

Exactly whose jobs is Obama’s administration saving?

I mean they have these numbers they cite about saving jobs, but everywhere I look their cuts are cutting jobs, their tax increases will but costing the economy jobs, and their stimulus spending is disappearing into the black hole of government mismanagement.

And people think these Liberals walk on water...

(To think people were depressed and miserable when there was full employment and wages were going up on their own. Now that they’re unemployed life is just peachy.)

Why is this a surprise? Check Davis Monthan, we might still have some SPADS in mothballs.

Bingo. Who needs fighter planes anyway? Obama’s mesmerizing speeches surely render all forms of military conflict unnecessary.

We are so screwed!

“Obama’s mesmerizing speeches surely render all forms of military conflict unnecessary.”

I don’t know about his speeches making military conflict unnecessary, but his policies sure are going to make it impossible for the US.

Is this an unintended consequence? Probably not?

It was futile discussing the demise of the F-22 here with all those utterly convinced it was an unneeded dog, especially since the F-35 was going to do all F-22 could do and more, its supporters faithfully told us.

And now, what will those F-22 hating F-35 supporters say when it's their F-35 following in the F-22s footsteps? Oh, I know...our drone air force will fly to our rescue!

Obviously, we don't need manned fighters any more than we needed guns in those fighters way, way back when. Finally, technology has made obsolete the notion that those who fail to heed history are doomed to repeat it.

Didn't 0bama tell you that war is obsolete now that he's in office? We're all one big happy global family. We're going to work together for our shared prosperity. Why, we could cut the entire defense budget and set up every illegal alien for life! Isn't it great living in 0bamerica?

Yeah, you get it. Reduce America to a third rate military power. Clinton tried it too. “Zero” told us this was his plan.

Just one more step in weakening America. Granted the F-22 was expensive. But the best fighter in the world.
Now the F-35 JSF is being cut.
Congress was able to find money for their private Jets, but protecting America? Well that's a different story.
We need both aircraft to maintain air superiority in the coming years. No other nation has the ability to take us on in the air at this point. Why give it up?

Maybe we can buy some Su 35s from the Russians cheaper? Its a sad day for the USA. Wait until war comes and we are caught without a modern AF and our enemies have better ships. Think 1941 Japanese Zero vs P 40s. This may save bucks to cut the F-35 but in the end it will cost American lives.

There is no money for any thing. The country is broke. The world will not buy our debt bonds. The left needs cash for the social programs we have now. The crash is soon.

The fact is the Left doesn’t want us buying any military hardware period. The more expensive it is, the more they oppose it. The classic trick is to scuttle a current purchase (e.g., F-22) in favor of a future weapons system that is supposedly better. However, when that system is ready, they will pull the same ruse. In this way, they appear pro defense, but the end result is that we buy nothing. The people who acquire, develop, and use military hardware tend to be on the conservative side too. So why subsidize those people when you can just hand out entitlements to your traditional constituent groups?

The problem isn’t that we have “no money”—its that we spend too much on things that aren’t legitimate functions of Government. If Government stuck to the basics (law enforcement, defense, infrastructure, etc), we’d be in good shape (even now).

“Reduce America to a third rate military power.”

Nope. Wrong - not a third rate military power but a military-free area formerly known as the US. He’s simpily fulfilling his campaign promise to unilaterally disarm. Nothing to worry about.

You must use tungsten as the nose weight. Anything else is not PC, and those tunsten ammo contracts that the left shoved down out collective throats are still operative. So lets get cracken with low-cost Chinese labor to make them by the millions - cheapest military air superiority airframe in the world! Let those Flankers just try it! We’ll show ‘em!

Not so - if they made just one more that the 187 cost per plane would drop, if they made 40 more, the cost would fall to 70 million per, if they made all 750 in the original plan the cost would fall near 22 million per.

See: The Untimely Demise of the F-22 - linked in another F22 thread.

I'm in agreement with you. The higher the quantity the lower the cost. However, Obama didn't look at it that way.
Trust a Liberal intent on bringing America down to first make slashing cuts in out defense, military and intelligence gathering.

Yes your right - my bad - a “good Russian” it is.

As far as the starry eyed - they will be the first to go - unreliable, you know - they already sold out their country, so who can trust them? Therefore, they are untrustworthy making them expendable. The Purges of Stalin will have a rebirth - just think what modern show trials will look like - Oh, the commentary!
