I've been getting a lot of "Service Temporarily Unavailable" pages this morning - and noticing the number of double- and even triple-posts, others are getting it too....
Ping
a DOS attack was yesterdays problem? probably the white house
Is your computer plugged in?
I got a few yesterday, today, and ironically, just now when I pushed the “reply” link... Would seem to be a problem at FR’s servers because our client-side internet is apparently working, and the basic HTML server is working well enough to know something went wrong and return the “Unavailable” message.
Service Temporarily Unavailable
The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later.
Been getting them intermittently this morning here in St. Louis...
Same here Uncle Ike.
In fact- I just tried to send this post and received the Service Unavailable page...trying again.
I have been seeing some this morning. Even got one when I opened this thread and another when I first tried to reply. Either they are doing work or the DNS hacksters are busy.
He'll be awarded a red star medal for his achievements by the chief commissar.
” a DOS attack was yesterdays problem? probably the white house “
Yes — there was a thread (originated by JimRob) about it yesterday on the YAHOO GROUPS alternate site (Freerepublic2)...
I see it too. I’ve put up a few dozen posts and seen the double post phenomenon only once. Wonder if it depends on browser. (I’m using Firefox 3.0.13)
Maybe a reminder to get in a the FReepathon? LOL
(btw, my check was mailed Monday) :)
I’ve found I must go back and re-click to get to the webpage. This 2-step process must be repeated for each new page.
I use http://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/ to see if the site is actually down. It might be useful for others, too.
I don't know if it is a security issue to tell the site's problems out in public but if not I'd request that a post be made so that we know how to respond, even if the only thing to do is to be patient.
Happening to me, too.
Me too.
yup, can’t access my pings
this site was very slow for me last night. just got the temporary notic when i tried to post...
Me too.
Happening here also. About a week ago I was on free republic and my screen went black. Windows was destroyed and I had to go into recovery and reinstall my original settings. May have been a coincidence, I don’t know.
” May have been a coincidence, I dont know. “
I doubt that FR had anything to do with your computer crash - over the years, FR has proven to be the most stable, spam/malware-free, user-friendly site on the web...
Even ‘downtimes’ are rare enough that we get seriously aggravated when they do happen.... ;~)

This is what I got to this reply...
now I forgot what I was going to say.. crap
My wife and I figured that it was an attack against FR.
It’s more of an inconvinience today. Yesterday it went completely down.
The folks at Twitter and Facebook seemed to of figured it out.
Should we blame Linda Douglass?
The problem is that people trying to post get the “unavailable” message, then not knowing whether the post went through, hit the post button again.
I think the all-time record is something like a string of 17 identical posts. The poster blamed his wireless service, but the software in his “device” kept resending until it got a positive response from the service. Not a good design, in my opinion.
I found the group you mentioned. Thanks.
Here's info for FReepers that don't know about this emergency site.
URL: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/freerepublic2/
NOTE: It is freerepublic2 and NOT the others. (Some are porn.)
This is the rss feed to copy and paste into your rss news reader:

Happening to me also . Just happened when I went to open your post . next time it was OK !
There are some real nasty and very smart hackers that have been set lose on the web lately, I suspect. Recently had an application on a server hosted in an East European country get shutdown completely. From what I could tell they seemed to have the ability to put the server backwards in time. Probably by changing the time function on the server. I sure hope they don't have time travel capabilities. Determined this by finding recently hacked files dated as if they were changed or hacked 3 months before they actually got changed.
I’ve been having this problem in Panama since yesterday.
It continues today.
Happened to me the first time I clicked on this thread...
I just hit F5 (Reload) and it brings me to the page on FreeRepublic I was going to! It happened when I clicked reply
I am going to slip on my tinfoil hat and point out that these “occurrences” seem to happen more frequently at the end of freepathons, when things slow down in the donations department.
Perhaps it’s somebody’s idea to make people realize that Free Republic is worth a few bucks for the excellent service we always expect when we come here.
Yes, I’m getting 503 message a lot this morning.
Actually. The web is under serious attack. Has been for about a month now.
Just wave at the men in the black suits talking into their watches.
Hi, guys!
Actually we’ve had several since the election. Obama doesn’t like dissent or criticism.
“Is your computer plugged in?”
hehehehehe I love this place!!!
It’s okay. I’ve reported the problem to flag@whitehouse.gov.
I think these attackers are much smarter then anyone Obama personally knows or has ever meet. English appears to be a second language to them though. BTW - They can now insert small text areas on top of any screen. Had a small seamless text area inserted into the real paypal login window that was from a hacker asking for ATM card info. The poor English skills was the giveaway, but at first I was real mad at paypal. Those idiots don’t even know English. Oops. Then it clicked.
Now I'm getting triplicate posts! And some of them are from a Preview command.
LOL
The recent attacks (of a few months back) on DC were foreign.
Very possible. Good think I got DSL.
I didn’t pay any attention to the Twitter attacks as I don’t Twitter. Do you know, were they also foreign in origin?
From what I have seen, if you get the error message after you hit post, the posting still happened. My experience anyway. Later.
