Hundreds Hurt in 11-Hour California Prison Riot
SOLOMON MOORE
Published: August 9, 2009
LOS ANGELES Rioting inmates smashed and burned a large California prison on Saturday night and Sunday morning, injuring 250 prisoners and hospitalizing 55.
The 11-hour riot, at the Reception Center West at the California Institution for Men in Chino, about 40 miles east of Los Angeles, broke down along racial lines, with black prison gangs fighting Latino gangs in hand-to-hand combat, the authorities said.
No prison employees were injured, no deaths were reported, and no inmates escaped, state officials said. But 10 of the 33 prisons in the state system were put on lockdown to prevent unrest from spreading. Those 10 were in the southern part of the state.
Damage to the 1,300-inmate medium-security prison was significant and extensive, said a spokesman, Lt. Mark Hargrove. One housing unit was virtually destroyed by fire, Lieutenant Hargrove said. The other housing areas were so badly damaged that they were uninhabitable, he said, so some inmates were being temporarily housed in tents while others were sent to alternate prisons.
With more than 150,000 inmates, the California prison system is one of the most crowded in the nation, with many of its facilities holding more than double the number of inmates they were designed for. A federal three-judge panel ruled last week that crowding and poor health care caused one avoidable inmate death each week and that the system was impossible to manage.
Lieutenant Hargrove said prisoners had smashed windows, torn down gates and used whatever they could to battle one another in the riot.
Inmates broke out glass and used shards as knives, he said. They used pieces of metal, wood, whatever they could break off the walls, pipes.

Wow, 150,000 Obama supporters!
What happened? Cafeteria serve jelly instead of marmalade?
Yeah...Arnold wants to let 60,000 of them loose to terrorize California the way they just did to the Chino facility!
>>No prison employees were injured, no deaths were reported, and no inmates escaped, state officials said<<
Sounds like a happy ending to me.
More black vs chicano thuggery.
Somehow they’ll manage to blame whitey.
Eagerly awaiting the Kenyan to weigh in on how stupidly this riot was conducted.......
A Veritable Paradise, Doncha Know?
Nope - Obama knows it's always the cops who are at fault - or the guards - anyone who's on the side of the law...
Okay, I think we’ve figured out how to solve overcrowding in the cellblocks: Let the inmates burn the cellblocks down.
In South Alabama, they operate prison farms that grow the food they eat and do upkeep projects.
I for one am tired of the inmates running the asylum. Let them earn their keep or live on bread and water.
vaudine
The racist bastards!
Whitey put ‘em in there, doncha know. Ain’t one of ‘em guilty of a thing. Just axe ‘em.
From what a prosecutor told me, the Mexican mafia rules the prisons. They are organized and vicious. And, since every gang foot soldier is likely to spend time in the brig, it’s best to belong to the organization that will protect you once you are there.
Whitey threw ‘em in there according to them.
Latinos probably don’t want to convert to islam.
and california really wants to let these people out? WHY?
Hmmmm..the guards just got out of the way and let nature take it’s course. Sounds like we may have a template for those “no snitches” neighborhoods hostile to the police.
Should make for good TV.
Watch what happens when they ultimately get out. They are going to come after the gated communities. They are itching for revenge. The MM already operate in the US extensively. Just a matter of time until prosecutors and judges are targets. MS13 and black gangs extend across the entire US.
Many have military training. It’s getting to be real scary.
bttt
A judge just ordered the release of 44,000 Calif prisoners released because they are not receiving the same health care as congressmen do so there should be lots of empty beds. I wish the wardens would knock off the discrimination and put mixed races together...
So who won?
a) Chino prison was a trustee institution. You had to earn the right to be sent there from somewhere much worse.
b) Guards back then didn't play around. This kind of thing would've been nipped in the bud in under 10 minutes, with some heads bashed in.
c) When prisoners did escape, they headed for Carbon Canyon, not Chino. We had a huge police force for our size (only 10,000 population) and ALL were ex-military, mostly Marines. A Polynesian police lieutenant lived behind us and was always badgering my dad (a recently retired Gunnery Sergeant) to join the force.
I don’t think all of us southerners with guns are too scared.
parsy, who will take some with him
Californians took care of this problem once before.
The Barbary Coast Vigilante Committees:

parsy, who says the criminals will run like hell if people with guns really get after ‘em.
That would save BILLIONS of dollars , but instead we've got to hear about the "injured". too bad...
1. The author of this article is spinning this to make it sound like fighting between blacks and hispanics erupted during the riot...fits the narrative doncha know (see item #2) The fighting was the riot in and of itself. The same two groups went at it the night before in a different dormitory at the same joint.
2. The 9th circus, the most overruled court in the land, did indeed demand this week that California release 40k inmates due to overcrowding and generally unpleasant conditions. Can’t be too unpleasant as 80% decide to come back again. Google ‘Thelton Henderson’ and see what you come up with.
3. I’m pleased to not see one comment (so far) regarding overpaid union guard types. 80 guards against 1500 inmates, with the 9th circus court second guessing every move. Some of the c/o’s were on duty for 24 hours or more. If you want a glimpse of the keepers point of view, check out: http://www.ccpoa.blogspot.com/. Just remember to wash your hands afterwards.
4. Yes I’m a c/o, and no I wasn’t there. I work at a different joint. This is a daily occurence somewhere in the state on any given day. This one stands out only for the number of combatants.
5. Sleep well knowing that each of the poor misunderstood ‘yuts’ injured badly enough to go downtown will receive top notch healthcare courtesy of the taxpayer. Therein lies the tale of the cost-per-inmate differential between California and other states...Thelton Henderson and the constitutional level of health care. The social worker and psychologist overtime will be off the hook trying to get all 1500 of these roaches signed up for social security psych disabilities as a result of this.
One being "Riverside County Medical Center".
HBO got cancelled.
Why were no rioting prisoners shot from the towers?
The time is past that. Time to put them in Thunderdome. Just fence off a decent chunk of death valley, dump them all in there (the violent offenders) and the one left standing you shoot. Film the whole thing, make a DVD, and sell it and give taxpayers a rebate.
Arnold will release them, so there’s nothing to worry about.
Damn- for a minute there I thought that you typo'd BHO.
“Sounds like a happy ending to me.”
My thoughts exactly.
>>Why were no rioting prisoners shot from the towers?<<
Less entertainment value than watching them take each other out.
......But 10 of the 33 prisons in the state system were put on lockdown to prevent unrest from spreading. .......
And how would the knowledge of unrest spread?
Thanks for your insights. Would you agree that forcing inmates of different races to share cell is a bad idea and contributes to the problem?
In this case, I doubt it. CIM is a bunch of open floor dormitory type housing units. More like a military barracks arrangement.
On the other hand, where I work, one of the units has been locked down on/off for the better part of the last year because of an ongoing war between the blacks and whites that started over a ‘white crip’ celling up with his LA homies.
NOT!!
It's certainly NOT impossible....but the State doesn't have the will to do it........
But most in congress should have the same food and lodging.
The system is so bad, I recommend privatizing two prisons and then do two more every two years. This will give a fresh approach, save a few billion a year in operating exopenses, and totally erase the union stranglehold.
I would eliminate the state parole division and divide 90% of the money up amongst the local PD and probation departments to handle those released from prison.
Lastly, deport all non-viloent offenders who are illegals immediately, before releasing anybody else early.
Not when a Senator can kill a young woman in cold blood and not serve a day...
I would lock up a third of congress at random every year. 20 year sentences and keep moving. That way we’ll at least get most of the crooks.
