PETA Unhappy Meals Targeting Kids
Slashfood ^ | Aug. 7, 2009 | Sara Bonisteel

Posted on 08/07/2009 9:34:28 PM PDT by Schatze

Kids hoping to grab a Happy Meal from McDonald's might end up with PETA's Unhappy Meal instead.

The animal rights organization lifted its moratorium on the McCruelty Campaign this year and since June has distributed Chicken McCruelty Unhappy Meals to McDonald's customers outside about a dozen restaurants around the country.

"McDonald's markets its food to children by packaging it in brightly colored boxes with toys," Lindsay Rajt, a spokeswoman for PETA, tells Slashfood. "But most kids really love animals, and if they knew that McDonald's suppliers were breaking the wings and legs of gentle animals like chickens, I think that you'd have to drag kids into McDonald's kicking and screaming."

The campaign, though, has parents "hatin' it."

A PETA protest of a McDonald's in Albany, N.Y., upset parents on Thursday, WXXA-TV reports.

"I don't want my son to be around something like this," parent Stephanie Gipson told the station. "This is not fair for a child."

But Rajt says children have seen worse things than PETA's Unhappy Meal, which comes "stained with blood" and containing a bloody rubber chicken, a cutout of a knife-wielding Ronald McDonald, photos of mutilated animals and a Chicken McCruelty T-shirt.

"Kids deserve to be told the truth and we really do need to give them credit," she says. "The bottom line is that they've really seen much worse in movies and videogames, and we all know that kids empathize with animals."

McDonald's told Slashfood that it expects the humane treatment of animals from its suppliers.

Our goal has always been to lead the industry by bringing about improvements in animal welfare including rigorous, ongoing audits of our suppliers' facilities.

"McDonald's works with leading independent animal welfare experts and makes decisions based upon science to promote continuous improvement in animal welfare as part of our broader sustainable supply chain initiatives," Bob Langert, McDonald's vice president of corporate social responsibility, says in a statement to Slashfood.

"McDonald's continues to support our chicken suppliers' use of both controlled atmosphere stunning (CAS) and electrical stunning. There is no conclusive scientific consensus that one practice is better than the other, however, we recognize that in either method, good management practices are critical," he says. "It is also important to note that in the U.S., there are no large-scale chicken producers that currently use the CAS method, therefore demands to purchase chickens from this method to meet McDonald's supply needs are not viable."

PETA says it worked with McDonald's behind the scenes from 2000 to February 2009 before it re-instituted its McCruelty campaign. A PETA protest was expected Friday afternoon at a restaurant in South Burlington, Vt.

Have you ever noticed that "vegetarian" meals aren't really made with vegetarians?

Giggled out loud with that one. Good answer.

Ya gotta wonder how these kids turn out when they grow up. Do they rebel and eat nothing but fast food and meat when they get their first taste? Do they have an amish type ‘go into the meat eating world and then choose your religion’ type of experience? Are they taught to vomit and take drugs early in their teens so they too can grow up to be see through?

I’ve got so many questions........

“breaking the wings and legs of gentle animals like chickens,”

Chickens are not gentle animals. They are the source of the phrase “pecking party.” If there is blood on a fellow chicken, they gather around and peck her to death.

Al Bundy to Peg Bundy on Married with Children...
Peg: “Al, salads are good for you..”

Al: “Peg, I work 8 hours a day stuffing shoes up fat women’s hooves. As a man, I need you to cook something on that pan and I dont care just as long as there ‘s some form of dead animal on it.”

Because an animal is gentle that means it has special rights? When people think of chickens they think of either the cute little yellow balls of fluff not the cock fighting adult variety (remember hens are used for eggs and breeding new chicks)

Chickens are not only mean, cleaning a chicken coop is the smelliest job as they also stink...When I had my farm I use to say if chickens didn’t taste good, men would have wiped them off the face of the earth years ago....Chickens have no urinary system, so their poop is also their pee...the ammonia brings tears to the eyes and the manure has to be aged before using on a garden as the ammonia in it will kill tender plants...

How the chicken gets it is of no concern to me as long as it is a nice plump, juicy chicken.

I use to take my meat chickens and turkeys to an old farmer that butchered birds...They are dropped in a large funnel that just allows the head to stick out, then each is decapitated and then the blood is allowed to drain. Then they are dunked in very hot water to defeather...The hot water opens up the pore and the feathers can be wiped off with the hand. Sometimes a second dunk is needed, they they are singed over a flame as they also have hair that needs to be burned off...gutted and left in a bath of ice water to cool down.

Or maybe they were gutted before defeathering...its been a couple of decades since I have raised chickens..but that's close enough to how the process is done..

Just pointing out that the oft repeated "God made them out of meat" and "animals are tasty" comments are not sufficient arguments for eating meat.

Hey, if carnivores can play with words a bit on this topic, so can vegetarians!

It's low in carbohydates and provides protein. Those are good enough reasons for me.

Those are good reasons.

I've got nothing against meat eaters. The way I see it, we all pick our point of what we are willing to kill to support ourselves. Practically no one would eat a human. Not many would eat an ape. Some will eat horses and dogs, some won't. Some won't kill a cow, others (such as myself) would rather not kill a chicken or a fish.

I'm for mutual respect between herbivores and carnivores. Bon apetit, and DOWN WITH PETA.

Sure, I suppose you can have some fun with it. Meanwhile, I'll be enjoying a 1.5” cut of New York steak tomorrow night, and if you start a thread about vegetarians, I can guarantee you I won't feel even an urge to comment in it.

I find that people that deprive themselves of life's pleasures tend to try and justify their stance by trying to spoil the pleasures that they choose to not engage in.

Mmmm...tasty steaks. ;)

Agreed. If people want to be vegetarians or vegans, it's none of my business or anyone else's. PETA doesn't seem to understand the concept of personal choice.

Agreed. I also think they are despicable money grubbers and pathetic attention seekers.

Many years ago, not knowing anything about them, I assumed they were good folks simply in favor of humane treatment of animals. Then I saw a local news piece where the Iowa Pork Queen, a lovely sixteen year old getting her honor in fron of her family and friends, was hit by a pie by one of these creeps and made to cry. I've had it in for PETA ever since.

One of my bantam roosters fighting claw (I forgot the name of that thing) would get so long, when I spotted him walking funny so as not to gore himself with it, I would get out the net and catch him to cut the dam thing so he could walk straight, it was sharp as a needle and they never quit growing...Could sink them in an arm and rip you apart...One of my friends got the short end of a roosters, attack and she had to go get stitched up, after she caught the nasty bastard and cut his head off.....

She carried the scars.......well she didn't cut his head off, she rung his fuc*ing neck and enjoyed it..

Well, the head came off and my son threw it, it flopped for a good minute, but when you let them do that, it bruises the meat...It got tossed in the garbage can...My son thought it was funny but my husband didn’t, but son was now bigger than father....LOL at the story from my son...Dirty looks from dad....laughed again...

Why eat meat?

Not all proteins are created equal. Proteins have distinct amino acids, and lacking amino acids from meats can cause problems with muscle strains and weakened connective tissue in humans. My wife is a former vegetarian whose chronic shoulder pain was healed after she started eating meat. Another BIG problem is that people who don't eat meat eat WAY too much soy protein and products. The problem is that soy contains Isoflavones, which is toxic to the thyroid. In adults it increases the risks of thyroid tumors and cancers. Isoflavones are also a synthetic estrogen. In children this can cause serious problems with growth, as some studies have indicated. On the positive side, menopausal and post-menopausal women should eat MORE Islofavones as they mitigate negative effects of that age.
