Readers on the left will be shocked, if not incredulous, to learn that neither I nor any conservative I know realized why the president asked Vice President Joseph Biden to join him, Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., and Cambridge police Sgt. James Crowley for their fabled "beer summit" at the White House.
I had simply assumed that the president invited Biden in order to lessen any tension by having someone with no connection to the case join the meeting. Likewise, another conservative, the producer of my radio show, Allen Estrin, assumed that the vice president was in the area and was spontaneously invited to join the trio. My engineer, Sean McConnell, just wondered why the vice president was there.
We were all blindsided by the reason that liberals apparently instinctively understood: to provide racial balance, as it wouldn't look right if Sgt. Crowley were outnumbered two to one by blacks. In the words of the New York Times coverage of the event: "to add balance to the photo op that the White House presented: two black guys, two white guys, sitting around a table."
This is highly instructive.
The fact that Crowley was outnumbered three to one by liberals meant little or nothing to most Americans on the left, because they deem race far more significant than values. Most conservatives, on the other hand, saw the president, the vice-president, the Harvard professor and the police officer, not two blacks and two whites. Indeed, such a calculation would have struck most conservatives as absurd: Was Sgt. Crowley supposed to think, "Hey, great, another white is at the table; now I feel secure"?
In order to deflect attention from the president's gaffe in declaring that the Cambridge police "acted stupidly" right after acknowledging both that he was a personal friend of Louis Gates and that he did not have all the facts, the president and his liberal supporters have told us that the Crowley-Gates incident would be a great teachable moment for al Americans.
It has indeed turned out to be, but not at all in the way the president has meant it to be.
All it has taught, indeed reconfirmed, is how much more race-conscious the left is.
And it has taught us once again us that no matter how little anti-black racism actually exists in America, most blacks and nearly all of the left deny this. That the vast majority of non-blacks are either proud of the fact or could not care less that a black man is president of the United States apparently means next to nothing to most blacks and most liberals of all colors. Too many blacks and liberals continue to see whites as racist and therefore to see black-white interactions as race-centered even when they are not.
In my 27 years of broadcasting I have taken a many calls on air from black listeners some of whom have told me that I do not what I am talking about when I speak about how little white racism there is in America. I am not a black, they argue, and therefore cannot possibly know how bad it is. These callers tell me that they experience racism every day as a black person.
My response has always been to ask, "OK. What was the racist incident you experienced today?"
In every instance, the response was something along the lines of, "Well, not today."
To which I have always responded with another question: "OK, what was the racist incident you experienced yesterday?"
And, again, nothing was ever cited.
I don't give up. I then ask the caller when the last time was that he or she experienced racism. Answers to that are usually unclear.
My point is not that there is no anti-black racism in America. It is that there is much less than most blacks and liberals think. Even when one assumes that ill treatment was due to racism, it is often difficult to know for certain.
I then provide my listeners with this example: Years ago driving home from synagogue, both my sons and I were wearing yarmulkes, or skull caps. A convertible car filled with young boys sped past me and yelled into the car "F--- you" and called my wife a "b---ch."
I then said to my family, "I have finally experienced anti-Semitism in America."
I decided to follow the car and, to my shock, they screamed the same obscenities at other cars, none of whose occupants were discernibly Jewish.
It turned out that the event was not what I was certain, and had every reason to believe, was an example of anti-Semitism, but just an example of young thugs acting thuggish.
So here's the teachable moment: Harvard historian Louis Gates talked back to a police officer because he was treated as a suspect when he felt he should not be, given his fame as a Harvard professor. The professor was certain that the only possible explanation for such treatment was that he, Gates, was a black and the officer just another racist white policeman. The professor was wrong. The president was wrong. The press is wrong. Liberals are wrong. Even most blacks are wrong.
Many American non-blacks -- even those who did not vote for Barack Obama -- were hopeful that the election of a black as president of the United States would mean the end or at least the beginning of the end of the black and liberal view of America as racist.
And here's the other teachable moment: We were quite naïve. As far as most liberals and blacks are concerned, nothing has changed.
Too bad.
"I may be a little biased here, and I don't know all the facts, but the Cambridge Police clearly acted stupidly."
Because with this quote, Obama provided a window for all Americans into his bias and underlying feelings that he exposed with that statement.
In truth, underneath the sheen, and the thin venier...behind the TOTUS, Obama is just like Gates, Wright, Ayers, etc.
And, IMHO, that is the most revealing thing about the issue with Gates. He is so clearly another person and instance of a pattern that fits Obama's other "close friends".
Racist, hate filled, angry, people who detest traditional America and the free market and whose seething hatred is only just below the surface...and in some cases always out in the open. Frank Davis, Bill Ayers, Bernardine Dohrn, Jeremiah Wright, Henry Louis Gates, even his own wife, Michelle (by her own admission)...and the list goes on and on.
There is a clear pattern here that the MSM not only knows, but refuses to report. And that is because most of them share this hatred.
Obama and all those pushing his radical agenda are abject marxist ideologues. Their "fundamental; change" is nothing more than a destruction of the American free market and fundamental republican principle.

All it taught was Bama gets his 4 points back that he lost during that week. Some people are so dumb.
Has anyone considered taht there were four liberals sitting there?
Do you know who I am? = I’m a friend of the President
They acted stupidly = You do NOT arrest MY FRIENDS
Cop: Gates Told Him "I'll See Your Momma On The Porch"
Here’s a recipe for ending racial problems in America.
1. Economic growth.
2. Stop talking about it (race).
Has anyone considered taht there were four liberals sitting there?
I think you hit the nail on the head. Most seem to assume that because Crowley did his job, and did it correctly, that he is conservative. When in all probability, he voted for BHO. So, this whole situation was Crowley’s ‘teachable’ moment (if he did vote for the madman). Just as Lou Dobbs is experiencing his ‘teachable’ moment over at CNN. The ‘teachable’ moment? ‘The sudden and shocking realization of the deep rooted hatred in the democrat/liberal ideology.
If gates had guts, he would accuse the white half of 0 of making sure he got the best photos of his kingship coming out of the WH, while Crowley helped the old man down the steps in the background.
When I saw Biden in the picture my thought was why Biden was there? I couldn't fathom any other reason other than to have one more person there to round out the number. Race was never given any thought.
Weird... what is it with libs?
Dennis Prager always nails the subtleties of these social dynamics as well as anyone, yet is still rather underrated and low profile.
I keep thinking of the interview between the great Morgan Freeman and Mike Wallace on “60 Minutes” years ago: Freeman called “Black History Month” ridiculous, and pointed out that no one could or should reduce the history of Blacks in America to an observance limited to one month.
Black History is AMERICAN History, no more, no less, he said. The clueless Wallace then asked “But how will we ever get rid of racism?” TO which Freeman replied
“STOP TALKING ABOUT IT!”
A SIMPLE and PROFOUND statement.
The fact is, 99% of Americans have NO problem with blacks, as long as they’re not made to fear for their lives; i.e.,
as long as they’re smart enough NOT to walk through the worst parts any big city ghetto by themselves, at night.
There is a beautiful and entirely natural slowly paced evolution that goes on IN REAL LIFE between blacks and whites, and has gone on probably EVEN IN THE PERIOD WHEN SLAVERY WAS LEGAL. It is THIS that is overlooked, and completely SMOTHERED by the traffickers in racial animosity practiced by the Usual Suspects and SUrrogates we’re all familiar with.Their entire objective is just to continue to be invited on THE FACTOR, like SHarpton, and be called “Reverend” and be given equal, if not higher status than other guests, but above all, be taken as “spokesmen” for “their community”. THis is of course an entirely bogus construct, since all Sharpton wants to do is continue and strengthen his status as “a PLAYER” in WHitey’s game, allowed to sit at the same table, and mouth the same retrograde social/political cliches that pass as
“political discourse” these days.
Unfortunately an entire industry of GRIEVANCE has developed in the last few decades, certified and sanctified by the MSM and opportunistic politicians who
thrive on it, led by race hustlers like Jackson and SHarpton, who’ve been granted some totally unearned moral authority, and allowed to perform as actors in some pathetic social charade of white guilt/black aggression that goes ON and ON and ON. Obama was elected NOT because he was ‘post-racial’, but because he SAID he was-—it didn’t take long for him to line up behind the REAL agenda of his surrogates, like Gates, like his wife, and exacerbate racial tensions where none existed or should exist, and help turn an entirely ordinary local police procedure into “a teachable moment”. Hmmmmmm.....someone ask him, please, just what HE learned.

“Biased” being the definitive word in the entire episode.
Crowly said he votd for Bammy.......maybe, just MAYBE he will turn conservative since he’s been MUGGED by the President.
What a shame. I hoped that I was wrong about his vote. (I got rid of my TV and never heard how the guy voted). Sort of ‘sheds’ a new light on the beer sham. They found out how he voted and, well,.....as they say ‘the rest is history’. Had he been a McCain/PALIN supporter, he would of quickly turned into ‘Joe the Plumber’.
There was another story about Biden with Crowley's family and some children - so I thought Biden might of be there for the pictures and left shortly after. I totally missed the "color" thing too. I saw it as two liberal elites and a cop who respected the law above elites.
Nah, they probably just wanted Crazy Joe, the secret lush, to lighten up the meeting (no pun intended of course)with some of his gaffes.
At which point the oh-so-puffed-up-elite expects the cop to say, "Oh my mistake, you're so important the law doesn't apply to you - you who are almost a GOD. What was I thinking?".
So for most of us, the meeting was between three puffed up, full of themselves - elites - and one cop.
That is clearly racial profiling exercised against mostly white police officers everywhere.
Frankly I have no problem with profiling when used as an investigative tool.
It taught us that some black people and the president have a racism problem. We should have a national dialog about it.
My other observation is that even had the meeting been Gates/Crowley/Obama only, blacks would have still been outnumbered since ObaMao is only 3/8th black and maybe as little as 1/8th.
It taught us the difference between moral and liberal.
If Gates had been a moral man, he would’ve first gone, “eh?” and then had a jolly good laugh - for being mistaken for a burglar: “Oh, no officer, I live here!”
Instantly cleared up, good feelings and a possible “can I fix you a coffee” follow-up.
Intsead for Gates, Sergeant Crowley wasn’t protecting his home and property, but “oppressing black people.”
The “boss” wasn’t God above as in “I pledge allegiance... one nation... under God”... but a demand to know who was Crowley’s overseer.
Instead of a coffee shared by two men over a silly and altogether delightful mistake... the liberals had the carbon footrpint expanded all the way to Washington, over organized diet beers. Instead of race relations improving over genuine good feeling and no talk of race at all, we get edgy statements for the press and a situation so completely obvious (and silly) that it really only should’ve caused two men two smile, becoming a “teachable” moment instead of a thoroughly enjoyable one.
That’s what happens when you take God out of the equation: loss of common sense!
Biden was there because he was the only one that knew any Irish jokes.
Since “commercials” are an integral part of modern American culture, I anal-yze them for any evidence of racism.
I notice that at any positive get-together (e.g. to celebrate the drinking of beer) there is always a black couple in the smiling group. On the other hand, in the ads for home-security systems, the burglar is always white. Finally, at the water cooler, the dispenser of the wisdom that solves the poor white know-nothing’s problem is black.
Which is correct? Number 10 or number 15?
Perhaps because I was raised by well-intentioned liberals, I knew that Obama had brought in Biden to be the “other white guy” and provide “racial balance.” I also thought it was contrived and insulting.
The writer doesn’t understand something about racial attitudes - something that’s clear to me, since I live as a minority among Native Alaskans. Status as an aggrieved minority gives people power - the power to push people around, the power to complain, the power to threaten others with an accusation of discrimination or other unfairness. It makes you special, and it puts you on a pedestal. Others have to be deferential around you, as it was with royalty back in the day. Who wants to give up that feeling of “specialness?”
Basically reinforced to me that if you see some nasty or potentially nasty s*** going down, ignore it, do not call the police, keep yer nose clean, just pass go and keep going.
In my near sixty years on this planet I've been called a lot of names...all of them by people who are considered white. Nothing of what they've said have ever deterred me from seeking or achieving my goals. I'm the only one who has stopped myself...through my own personal faults.

I’ve watched the video clip three times, and Crowley quite clearly stated he did NOT vote for the current Pres__ent.
Perhaps a closer ear might be in order?
I thought I heard him say he did vote for Obama and that’s why he was so upset.
See # 28.
As Kojak would say: “Keep the faith, baby”
Oh, and it’s HAVE, not “OF”, as in:
I would have been there, but things got in the way
I would’ve been there...
I would “OF” been there... is wholly meaningless.
Don, who was playing at “language police” is now going to bed.
I’m late to the dance, and pretty new here, but I just stumbled upon something funny.
At Thedailyvoice.com under politics they mention in a blog about Gates another Harvard Prof (black), S. Allen Counter, a med school prof and Dir. of the Harvard Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations. In this blog they said Prof Conter told of being arrested in his own house while grading papers, humiliated, cuffed and dragged to jail.
I thought this horrendous, if it happened. Here is a prof of neuroscience (not an amorphous “studies” program). Maybe Cambridge police are targeting black men?
So I googled his name...not many pops.
One was a blog: aroundharlem.com
To paraphrase:
Well known neuroscience prof....stopped by two Harvard police officers in 2004....as he crossed Harvard yard.
Well, maybe this is nothing. But it smells “fishy”...so I’ll end my post here and send a copy to the white house flag thing.
