Joe Booth wins 19th Senate District (Delaware - GOP Pickup)
WGMD.com ^ | 8/3/09

Posted on 08/03/2009 7:24:37 PM PDT by LdSentinal

Voters in the 19th District have chosen Republican Joe Booth. He took over 60% of the vote. Unofficial numbers from 15 of 16 districts:

Republican Joe Booth – 4335
Democrat Polly Adams Mervine – 2083
Independent Matthew Opaliski – 408
Libertarian Wendy Jones – 56

The numbers are unofficial because for the second time in two elections, there have been problems with the state’s website and reporting the results as they come in from the election districts.

With Joe Booth’s unofficial win in the 19th District Senate race, that leaves the 37th House District without representation – and another special election on the way.

Not a great margin? Booth won with 63% of the vote, more than a 2-1 margin.

Good news in DE. The bad news is I saw an article stating the rodents might pick up Booth’s seat, and the DE House was what we had held for many years... until last November. We have to hold his seat and reclaim 4 others to win it back.

Especially humiliating for the Dems is that Mervine was the daughter of the late occupant of the seat, Thurman Adams.

Also, may Adams rest in peace.

DE matters a lot. Those 2 senate seats are ruling the country. Just like North Dakota. I still say Castle for Senate, but I plead nolo contendre. And “en passant”.

Heh. She was so bad they kept her hidden until last week.

Heard some guy named Pettyjohn, currently in Sussex council, wants Booth’s seat.

37th is my district....Booth was my guy. Opaliski is a personal friend.

I voted for Booth.

Oh, Man. ACORN is going to have to work really hard to swing this election over to the Democrat side. I don’t think they can do it.

Castle voted for Cap and Trade.

I’ll vote for a Dem before I’ll ever vote for him again.

Rumor is he wants Biden’s old job.

Lets see.

We won special elections in NoVa, DE, NH, and AL. We also won the Anchorage Mayor in AK. Not bad for a party that the media says is dying.

Locally, we’ve made some pickups, but federally, we haven’t gotten zilch since November, and that’s the big problem.

I never understood why Delaware has been so solidly RAT in recent years. Given it’s demographics — a small, mostly rural WASP state south of the Mason-Dixon line — it should be a swing-state at least. Good to see us finally making some gains at the local level. Too bad there’s still not a good alternative to Mike Castle for Senate at the national level.

Some lady last name King...also GOP I think.

This is my district and we like Booth. I think we’ll go GOP but it’s just a guess.

They need a younger guy who isn't a liberal. Castle, even if he were Conservative, will be 72 6 months after the start of the 2011 Congress. I think of Bunning in KY, and he was 67 at the start of his first Senate term in '99 and was already showing signs of declining capacity and senility by '04 when he was 73. We ought to be running someone thirty years younger.

Castle won’t even get the GOP vote the Delaware pubs are so mad at him.

I’ll never vote for him again.

Don’t much matter....Beau Biden’s gonna come home and take the seat. Got a benchwarmer in there now.

Castle oncit upon a time maybe had a shot, just a small shot, to beat Beau but no more, not after that wanton betrayal on Cap and Trade.

Partly because the GOP is weak and has run a lot of poor candidates for statewide office (and not adequately replacing our prior incumbents). New Castle/Wilmington is becoming like a Baja Philadelphia or South Jersey and it overwhelms and outvotes Sussex and Kent. Remove it from the equation and the state would be GOP. Ironically, decades ago, it was the opposite. Sussex and Kent were old-school Dem (almost like a Southern Dem state) and New Castle was the urbane, upper crust GOP county.

Since Delaware is so rural, you could probably find someone who’s mayor of town under 10,000 that would still be a credible candidate in both the primary and general elections, like Palin was in Alaska. I wonder if they have any Steven Laffey types who could take out Cap n’ Traitor Castle in the primary? I think running a state legislator would be a non-starter.

The funny thing is Beau barely won the AG's job in '06. The GOP ran some guy named Ferris Wharton, and he held Biden to a paltry 5% victory. Hell, why not run Wharton again ? Worst thing that happens is that he wins.

DE doesn’t have many towns of that size. The only Mayors I know anything about are Wilmington’s (a Black Dem) and Dover’s (White, non-partisan). There may be a GOP Mayor, but the town would be so small as to not be on my radar.

Sussex is now the GOP stronghold and Castle’s been paying the bills for the headquarters in Georgetown. Newcastle is Democrat...Kent...middle of the road.

If Sussex had a good pub party they could run this state. Got a lackluster but really nice fellow head of the GOP, he needs to quit and stay home and take care of his wife.

Matt Opaliski was once a GOP candidate, ran twice for Thurman’s seat. Sussex GOP screwed him over. Why didn’t they encourage Matt? He’s young, a family guy, ordinary but good talker, a conservative. Instead they ignored him and didn’t help his campaign.

But Bill Lee...hohoho....let’s pull him out of a bar in Dewey Beach, dust him off, and run him AGAIN.

Sussex county...there’s the conservative power...no leadership. give me a good leader and Delaware goes Republican, no sweat.

Wharton got himself arrested on a DUI about two years ago. He’s toast.

Yeah, he was a good candidate. Beau, come on, his Mama still wipes his nose. He won for his name...it’s a Delaware tradition.

I’m gonna change my name to Patricia Castle.

Yeah, but even if you got Sussex under excellent leadership, getting New Castle in line is still a pain in the ass. Too many liberal moonbats (went 70%-29% for the False Messiah, and that was way up from ‘04 when it went 61-39% for Kerry). I just noticed Kent is also getting the moonbat spillover (probably all the state gov’t workers), and even it went for Zero 54-45% after going for Dubya 56-43% in ‘04).

What a shame. Of course, having Biden as my Senator (nevermind Vice-Prince) would drive me to drink, too. I’ll tell you the real turning point for the DE GOP happened in the ‘80s. Had Tom Evans not f’d up with that sex scandal, he’d be in the Senate now (presumably would’ve succeeded Bill Roth, who stayed too long with no heir apparent), and Pete du Pont’s biggest mistake was not taking out a sophomore Biden in ‘84, which was the best year to have done it.

Brian Pettyjohn is GOP.

He is a young man—mid thirties, who is currently my councilman here in Georgetown, DE. He was elected to his first term in May, 2008.

He’s a smart guy, full of potential.

I know Joe Booth and voted for him. He’s a good man, has a lot of experience in Dover, and is highly respected in his district.

The Dems didn’t really care if Booth won this seat from them, because it doesn’t affect their lopsided control of the State Senate.

It’s Joe’s Assembly seat they are after. If they win this seat, they will have a supermajority in the House, and it will be a mirror of DC now, with Dems in control of both houses and the executive seat(governor).

The Republicans pick their candidate tomorrow—there is no primary. Forty one days until the special election, so we have our work cut out for us.

Pettyjohn and another conservative, Eric Bodenweiser have expressed interest. Ruth Briggs King, former head of the Sussex County Realtors, also wants the nod.

Whoever gets it, needs everyone’s help. The 37th Assembly District is fairly conservative, so there is an excellent chance that the GOP retains the seat. But there will be a fight.

First...exit...you remember me? I was at the tea party in the circle.

Listen, I’m in the thirty seventh district. We don’t eat cilantro here and we grow our own tomatoes.

I am willing to work like a dog to get a good candidate elected. You know anybody knows Pettyjohn pass along my name. Hell I’ll even put a sign on my lawn I’m so damn serious. We need to win this election.

Anyway....I’m on another Delaware Blog giving them hell...The GOP is gonna win this election. Sussex county pubs need to grow a pair and maybe I can help.

Although I’m a woman....heh.

I’ll fight like a dog to keep that seat GOP. I think with the help of Obama, this country’s looking for pubs to lead us out of the nuthouse. We gotta edge is what I’m saying here.

Yes, FT, I remember you. Even in the rain in April, we had a lot of fun.

I was in the crowd at the Mike Castle Town Hall meeting at the CHEER center on June 30th.He got woke up that day!

I was at the July Tea Party also.

Let’s see who gets the nod tomorrow. I know Mike Wyatt is interested on the Dem side. He’s a good friend also.

But the GOP needs to keep the seat to block the Dems.So that’s who I’ll be working for.

Ever call in to Bill Colley’s show?

Yu’ve described DE’s two southernmost counties to a tee—and the two did vote for Presidnet Bush. But Wilmington’s New Castle County votes like Delaware County, PA, and casts the overwhelming majority of the state’s votes.
