Two of three hikers being detained in Iran are Bay Area residents and freelance journalists.

Shane Bauer and Sarah Shourd, both UC Berkeley graduates, worked as freelance journalists affiliated with New American Media in downtown San Francisco, according to Sandy Close, executive director.

I doubt it even occurred to them that Iran would arrest them. Attending UC Berkley can give one a very warped world view. They probably think the whole thing is just a big misunderstanding with their Iranian brothers and that they will soon be released.
