Some speculate that left-handedness was repressed during the late 1800s and early 1900s, that it was seen as an abnormality and a hindrance to getting manual labor done in a timely fashion.
Today, it is much more accepted and sometimes even coveted as studies show that the left-handed population tends to produce a higher percentage of overachievers and that left-handed men tend to be richer than their right-handed counterparts. And in many sports, polo notwithstanding, left-handedness is a distinct advantage. Look how much closer the left-handed batter is to first base.
Researcher Alan Searleman recently wrote that, in general, southpaws are smarter than righties.
I wouldn't go that far, but Albert Einstein was a lefty. So was Michelangelo. And so is Barack Obama.
George W. Bush? A righty.

I’m a southpaw and am without a doubt smarter than any Leftie....
Ditto. My handwriting is bad enough too.
George Bush the Elder is left handed. As is Bill Clinton, and Ross Perot, so that when Bush 41 ran for reelection, all three candidates in the rare three way race were left handed. If we are going to talk about Presidents and handedness, this little trivia should be mentioned.
I see these stories resurrected from time to time (summer doldrums?!), and am reminded that it was my dhimmicrat 2nd and 3rd grade teachers that insisted that I learn how to write right-handed. I did - in school. Out of school I reverted to what was natural to me and as a consequence became somewhat ambidextrous (and considerably conservative!)...
Do you write with your left hand?
Four of the last six men in the White House were left handed (two GOP and two Dems).
From personal experience I noted a far higher percentage of left-handed people in law school than in the general population.
It must be because we use our right brain so much more.
Medical school too.
