UK: Asian man who called policemen 'white redneck hooligans' is guilty of racism

An Asian man who called police officers "white redneck hooligans" has been found guilty of making racist remarks.
Hassan Butt, 29, also accused officers of acting "like the Gestapo" and asked them: "Why are you treating me like a Paki?"
Butt, who once admitted having claimed he was a terrorist to make money from the media, was convicted of committing a racially aggravated public order offence by District Judge Diana Baker at Manchester Magistrates Court.
(edit)
He also asked officers who arrested and searched him: "Do you like feeling Pakis up?"
Butt, defending himself, admitted he used the words Paki and Gestapo and accepted he used the word hooligan, and possibly the word white, but denied calling the police rednecks.
Judge Baker told him: "You demonstrated towards the officers hostility based on their membership of a racial group."
Butt, of Copthorne Lane, Cheetham Hill, Manchester, was fined £200 and ordered to pay £100 costs and a victim surcharge of £15.
Judge Baker added: "I take seriously any form of racist abuse and feel the courts must strive to protect people."
Butt has previously admitted feeding untruths to journalists in order to "cash in" and having plans to write an autobiography called Leaving Al Qaida: Inside The Life And Mind of A British Jihadist.

He doesn't look Asian to me, but I understand that Pakistanis are called Asians by the Brits.
I have mixed emotions on this. While it is delicious that the law protects against white racism as other forms of racism, I believe freedom of speech should be paramount.

Asian in UK means Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Afghan, Bangladeshi etc.
Oriental means Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese etc.
The leftovers of colonialist parlance.

I am a big fan of Free Speech and people should be allowed to say what they want.
Having said that, if we are going to have any kind of “Racist Speech” laws then KUDOS to the Brits to applying it all around.
As much as I hate The Donald (Trump not Duck), the ONE time in my life when I admired him was when in The Apprentice (yes, yes, I watched the show...now get off my back) he FIRED a white guy for using the term “White Trash”. He said it was demeaning and racist, which it IS!!

PC consideration for all or PC consideration for all. Hate crime protection for everybody or hate crime protection for nobody. When "rednecks", the lower than dirt category in the PC pecking order, gets some consideration it may be a sign that the tide is turning to equal respect under the law for EVERYBODY. I hope Eric Holder is paying attention.

We actually are quite short of what the article calls "Asian" folks.
We'd be happy to have 'em if they like barbeque, 4-wheelers and beer.

He doesn't look Asian to me,One of the true idiosyncracies of the English speaking world. Almost as idiosyncratic as the way the term 'American' is used.
What does an Asian look like? (it's answered the same as what does an American look like?). 'Asian', if taken at face value, implies a huge blend of people. White skinned ones, very dark skinned ones, almond-eyed ones... In the States when someone says Asian invariably they mean 'Chinese looking'. But Pakistan and India are both part of Asia (as is Russia). The Brits don't do any better- as you point out they usually mean 'Pakistani/Indian looking' but I have asked a few Brits what they pictured on hearing the word have been told 'nothing specific/a range of possibilities' (although the probabilities seem to be weighted towards 'Pakistani looking').
It is like America. A Brazilian is an American. As is a Mexican. When I was younger and wanted firm rules that made sense, this used to grate a bit but as I got older, I realised that the English language itself is at fault here. That and the fact that we chose a name for ourselves that doesn't lend itself easily to the usage- although in Spanish one can say it specifically 'Soy estadosunidense'. Which means literally 'I am a United Stateser'. I use this usage when speaking Spanish instead of saying 'Soy Americano'.
But there is no way to win that battle because in most other languages it seems it is also codified- Ich bin Amerikaner. There is just no way for someone from the US to say it in English (or many other languages) without seizing both continents, north and south, for himself.

So Oriental is the PC term for far-eastern Asians in the UK?Nothing PC about it. Different country, different usage of the language. Not everybody speaks English the same way. LOL, we say aluminum, they say aluminium (a loo mini um- 5 syllables) :-)
It's funny, I was chatting to someone from rural Georgia (my birth place) on the phone the other night and was trying to explain to her that the Scots don't say 'you're in my way'; they tend to say 'you're in my road'. She wanted to know why they said it that way, why didn't they just say it the 'normal way'. It's like she thought the Scots were just trying to be difficult.
LOL, the Scots call a soft drink (i.e. Coca Cola) 'juice' as well. I always ask them which tree the coca cola fruit is grown and they look at me like I'm stupid.

If there ever was a name for a new band, this would be it.
To: Stoat
The ironic thing here is the man is referring to himself as a ‘Paki’ which is a racial epithet in the UK. If a white person said that to him, they’d get in a lot of trouble.

Yes, the ‘urban’ and gangbanger-wannabee blacks call each other ‘the N-word’* here in the USA but if a white person were to use that word even in jest among friends he would be in a world of hurt.
* PC expression used in this context because I don’t want to be banned from FR.

“Asian in UK means Muslim.”
Asian does not mean ‘Muslim’ at all in the UK. It’s is generally used to denote someone of Pakistani, Indian or Bangladeshi origin.
The reason for this being that, due to those being former British colonies, seeing someone from one of those countries was a Brit’s first view of someone from the continent of asia when immigration to the UK began to occur from the 1950s.
There are therefore plenty of non-Muslim ‘asians’ and plenty of non-’asian’ Muslims.

“I understand your point, but when did they start calling Arabs/Muslims Asians?”
No, the usage dates back much further. For instance, UK police forces on their national computer (which dates to the early ‘70s) have seperate ethnic classifications for ‘asian’ (IC4) and ‘oriental’ (IC5).
Someone of Arabic descent would be described as arabic, however, not asian.
