Dan Rather wants Obama to help save the news
Aspen Daily News ^ | July 29, 2009 | Andrew Travers

Posted on 07/29/2009 8:17:08 AM PDT by george76

Former CBS News anchor Dan Rather called on President Barack Obama to form a White House commission to help save the press Tuesday night in an impassioned speech at the Aspen Institute.

“I personally encourage the president to establish a White House commission on public media,” the legendary newsman said.

Such a commission on media reform, Rather said, ought to make recommendations on saving journalism jobs and creating new business models to keep news organizations alive.

“A truly free and independent press is the red beating heart of democracy and freedom,” Rather said in an interview yesterday afternoon. “This is not something just for journalists to be concerned about, and the loss of jobs and the loss of newspapers, and the diminution of the American press’ traditional role of being the watchdog on power. This is something every citizen should be concerned about.”

Rather, who has been a working reporter for more than six decades and currently hosts “Dan Rather Reports” on HDNet, pointed out that there are precedents for such national commissions, which have been used to help other at-risk industries.

Wow. What a concept. Some day maybe we'll have something like that in America.

"Free and independent" is defined as long as it ceaselessly praises all things liberal/Democrat and destroys all things conservative and/or religious, eh Danny-boy?

“Help save the news”......that is frakin hilarious especially in a consumer-based environment. If your product(s) fails to sell itself or attract consumers....yeah, according to the logic of the great Dan Rathers, turn to the government for a bailout to help ease the failure of news media to produce a viable and selling product that the consumer evidently does not want. =.=

“A truly free and independent press is the red beating heart of democracy and freedom,”

Yes and then, Dan, you and your ilk ripped that beating heart right out, crushed it, and spit on it.

The true, independent, free press is now on the Internet, and you and your intellectually bereft brethren can all go find a nice rock, and crawl under it.

Go away.

Sure, Danny boy. What liberals like you have done to the news is like a bully walking down the street and knifing the first person he sees, then screaming that the victim will die if he doesn’t get the medical help he needs.

You helped create the mess you’re in - deal with it.

Old Media:
local monopoly on news
local monopoly on pricing
classified ads monopoly
employed many
they decide when you get the news
they decide what news you get
delivered by a person driving by your house
delivered at 5, 6 and 10pm on the tube

New Media:
multiple sources of news
pricing will be greatly reduced
classifieds online (craiglist, etc)
far fewer employed
far greater political point of view
news available any time. updated every minute
delivered on Apple Tablets by next spring or some other ereader
available on satellite 24/7

Why would you want to save the Old Media except for the fact that you are just stuck in a time warp and nobody listens to you anymore and you are losing millions each quarter and ...

My goodness Dan, why can't the presstitutes create their own commission? After all, they're smarter than anyone in the world (if you don't believe it, just ask them), and therefore it should be a piece of cake for them!

Maybe they'll ask you to lead the charge Dan, I hear you're pretty good at creating things out of thin air.

The media has politicized itself. Anything or anyone that politicizes themselves especially towards the liberal spectrum tends to become stigmatized and they slowly whither away. They picked the wrong side of the fence to sit in. Their profits, ratings and their hand outstretched panhandler are what they have to show for it.
