ROME — Officials say a Swedish couple looking for the pristine waters of the popular island of Capri ended some 400 miles (660 kilometers) away in the northern industrial town of Carpi after misspelling the destination on their car's GPS.

Angelo Giovannini, a spokesman for the Carpi town hall, near Modena, said Tuesday the couple drove into the main square last week and asked the local tourist office how to reach Capri's famed Blue Grotto sea cave.

Giovannini said "we thought they might mean a restaurant. Capri is an island, they did not even wonder why they didn't cross any bridge or take any boat."

Reminds of the scene on the office when Michael drove his car into a lake by following his GPS.

“Capri is an island, they did not even wonder why they didn’t cross any bridge or take any boat.”

I think that pretty much explains the problem.

We were on a driving trip in June and while somewhere in Tennessee, wifey tried programming the TomTom to our proposed next day's destination in Arkansas.......she came up with something like 4700 miles.

She thought AK was the abbreviation for Arkansas......sigh

As long as we’re on this topic, I have a gripe about my Garmin Nuvi. I have set the vehicle as “bus” (when we travel with our 36’ motorhome towing a car), but it has still sent us down one lane dirt roads and on steep climbs with winding curves. I wonder what good it does to set the vehicle as a “bus”.

We often vacation in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

I’ve had to get the Mountain Directories (East and West) to make sure we don’t get onto an unnavigable road.

Well..., people gotta use a little bit of common sense with GPS. Actually I use GPS a lot, but I also check things out on a real map, too... :-)

Back when John Engler ran for Governor here in Michigan, he made the mistake of saying that he would drive his Oldsmobile to Mackinaw Island for vacation.

The media loved it of course and it was kind of amusing but what he meant was that he wouldn’t use a state owned helicopter to go on vacation.
