“N.C. Family Accused of Plotting ‘Jihad’ Stopped in Israel in 2007”
By MIKE BAKERAssociated Press Writer
July 29, 2009

SNIPPET: “An Israeli security official confirmed that members of the Boyd family were denied entry in 2007. He declined to say why they were stopped or provide further details. He spoke on condition of anonymity because the information was not officially made public.”

“Jihad, USA”
by Oliver North

SNIPPET: “Our nation’s chief executive, consumed with preparations for his “beer summit,” was as mute about the “North Carolina Seven” — all charged with conspiring to provide material support to terrorists overseas — as he was about the fraudulent elections in Iran. Perhaps that’s because he doesn’t want to alarm the public about a real and present danger — or because he was involved so personally in choosing just the right brews for himself and his guests.”

“The Terror Connection”
By: Jamie Glazov
FrontPageMagazine.com | Friday, July 31, 2009

SNIPPET: “FP: Dave Gaubatz, welcome to Frontpage Interview.

Seven Muslims from North Carolina (NC) were recently arrested for terrorism-related charges. Frontpage previously interviewed you about Islamic Centers in NC advocating violence against America and innocent people. Are they related?”

“The Creeping Homegrown Threat”

SNIPPET: “The arrest of seven North Carolinians on conspiracy charges shows, says Steve Emerson, how the U.S. is becoming like Europe, where homegrown terror plots get stopped—or not—seemingly every week.”

by Steven Emerson
The Daily Beast
August 2, 2009

SNIPPET: “This week’s arrest of seven North Carolina residents, including Daniel Boyd and his two sons, on charges of supporting terrorism and conspiracy to commit murder abroad, showed how the problem of homegrown Islamic terrorism is far more rampant than the media or the public is aware of. Just look at the major cases in the past year alone:

The convert from Long Island who joined al Qaeda (disclosed this past week) and gave the group information about Long Island trains and New York City’s subways.
The plot to blow up two synagogues and a National Guard plane in upstate New York by prison converts (scheduled to go to trial).
The plot to kill hundreds of soldiers at Fort Dix by assimilated American Muslims living here 25 years (all convicted).
The plot to operate a terrorist training camp in Oregon (pleaded guilty).
The plot to blow up buildings by the Liberty City 7 (all convicted).
The sweeping conviction of Hamas officials for conspiring to support terrorism overseas.
The cases of young Somali teenagers raised in the U.S. going overseas to become suicide bombers.
The Boyd case in North Carolina proves that radical Islamic ideology transcends economic class problems as has been claimed by pointy-headed sociologists. The Boyd family was white, had a middle-class existence, and had the economic opportunities afforded all Americans—just like most of the terrorists cited above—and yet chose to engage in jihad to the point that Daniel Boyd was willing to send his two kids on suicide missions to Israel.

That the FBI stopped all these plots is amazing, but they will never continue to bat a thousand. One of these days, the jihadists will succeed.

In the end, the mainstream media refuses to recognize that the “mainstream” Islamic groups are actually radical organizations that teach and imbue their followers with a hatred of the United States and Israel. These groups front as civil-rights groups, but in fact are radical Islamic groups whose constant message disseminated to the millions of Muslim followers is that the U.S. is an evil country engaged in a war against Islam. Once that message takes hold—and after all, these groups control the mosques, the Islamic newspapers, the Islamic schools, and the Islamic leadership from which American Muslims and converts get their ideas about the world—it is not a huge leap for some of them to become committed to violent jihad.

We are talking about a situation that is far more rampant than government leaders want to admit because the Islamic groups routinely throw the term “racist” at anyone who claims there is radicalism in the Muslim community. Two years ago, a poll was taken of American Muslims: 29 percent of young Muslims approved of suicide bombings. And those 29 percent are the ones that admitted their views. How many more would not tell the pollsters what they really thought?”

“THE CURIOUS CASE OF DANIEL BOYD”
—Author: Marisa Urgo

SNIPPET: “However, it’s clear there’s much more to the story than the weak indictment and the initial — mostly local — news reports.”

SNIPPET: “The Post has helpfully republished 1991 profile of Boyd by Steve Coll. Boyd, then a member of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar’s Hizb-e-Islami party in Pakistan, was living there with his wife, brother and sister-in-law:

In Pakistan the Boyds shifted from house to house in Hyatabad, a suburb in the foothills of the Hindu Kush mountains beneath the Khyber Pass, which leads to Afghanistan. After a year, Charles Boyd and his second wife, Debra, joined them.

The Post also returned to Pakistan to follow up on Coll’s 1991 article later in the week.

I am curious about the extent of the Salafist-Jihadist influence in the Raleigh, North Carolina region.”

“WHAT MEETS THE EYE”

Headlines | —Author: Marisa Urgo

SNIPPET: “Daniel Boyd, his two sons, and four other suspects will remain behind bars pending their trial on terrorism charges. A federal court judge determined this week that the suspects were a flight risk and a danger to society, and ordered them held. The detention hearing offered a few glimpses into what federal prosecutor may offer as evidence when the case goes to trial.”

SNIPPET: “This case — particularly Boyd’s biography — may offer counterterrorism analysts their first look at the substance and history of organized Salafist-Jihadism in the United States. However, it also represents the first substantial litmus test for US-based Islamist groups. Will they support the legitimate prosecution of the case, or will they go on to characterize the NC7 as hapless victims of non-Muslim aggression? I’m pessimistic.

We could be witnessing the beginning of a future radicalization movement in the United States: Al Qaeda (ver. 4.0).”

Superseding Indictment in Boyd Matter Charges Defendants with Conspiring to Murder U.S. Military Personnel, Weapons Violations

RALEIGH, NC—United States Attorney George E.B. Holding announced that on Sept. 24, 2009, a federal grand jury returned a superseding criminal indictment in the Daniel Patrick Boyd matter.

While the superseding indictment returned today includes all of the charges alleged in the original indictment of July 22, 2009, it also includes new charges against three defendants, Daniel Patrick Boyd, aka “Saifullah,” Hysen Sherifi, and Zakariya Boyd, aka “Zak.”

First, the superseding indictment charges Daniel Patrick Boyd, aka “Saifullah,” and Hysen Sherifi with conspiring to murder U.S. military personnel, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1117. The superseding indictment alleges, among other things, that in furtherance of this agreement, Boyd undertook reconnaissance of the Marine Corps Base located in Quantico, Va., and obtained maps of the base in order to plan an attack on Quantico. According to the superseding indictment, Boyd possessed armor piercing ammunition, stating it was “to attack the Americans.” A conviction for conspiring to violate Title 18, United States Code, Section 1117 has a maximum penalty of imprisonment for any term of years or life, and/or a $250,000 fine, followed by five years of supervised release.

Second, Boyd, Sherifi, and Zakariya Boyd, aka “Zak,” are also charged with possession of weapons in furtherance of a crime of violence, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 924(c). These section 924(c) charges are separate from, and in addition to, the section 924(c) charges alleged in the original indictment. A violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 924(c), carries a maximum penalty of no less than five years in prison nor more than life, a $250,000 fine or both fine and imprisonment, and up to five years of supervised release following imprisonment. If any of the defendants are convicted for more than one of the section 924(c) charges alleged by the grand jury, the minimum term of imprisonment rises to 25 years, to run consecutively to any other sentence.

Third, Daniel Boyd is also charged with the providing a Ruger mini 14 rifle and, on a separate date, .223 ammunition, to a convicted felon, each in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 922(d). If convicted, Boyd faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, and three years supervised release on each of these charges.

U.S. Attorney George E.B. Holding commented: “These additional charges hammer home the grim reality that today’s homegrown terrorists are not limiting their violent plans to locations overseas, but instead are willing to set their sights on American citizens and American targets, right here at home.”

“The events over the course of the week should serve as a reminder that there are those at home and abroad who continue to plot to cause harm to U.S. citizens. The FBI, U.S. Attorney’s Office, and our law enforcement and intelligence community partners will continue working tirelessly to prevent that from happening,” said Owen D. Harris, Special Agent in Charge of the Charlotte Division of the FBI.

“NCIS investigative efforts in support of the FBI’s investigation centered on protecting Marine Corps personnel assigned to MCB Quantico during Mr. Boyd’s alleged activities. These efforts were closely coordinated and supported by MCB Quantico Command to insure the safety of military and civilian personnel aboard the base. This case represents the close coordination between NCIS and FBI in addressing terrorism issues that may impact the operational readiness of the U.S. military.”

An indictment contains allegations that a defendant has committed a crime. Every defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.

FBI, Navy Foiled Alleged Terror Plot on Quantico

By Gerry J. Gilmore
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Sept. 25, 2009 – An indictment handed down yesterday in a North Carolina federal court charges three men with plotting to attack Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., with the intent to murder U.S. military personnel.
The men — two American citizens and a legal U.S. resident from Kosovo – are Daniel Patrick Boyd, 39; his son, Zakariya Boyd, 20; and Kosovo native Hysen Sherifi, 24, according to Justice Department and Marine Corps news releases.

The three allegedly were involved in a plot to procure maps of the base and assemble weapons as a precursor to an attack, the releases say. They also are named with four other men — including another Boyd son, Dylan, 22 — in a sealed indictment July 22 for alleged involvement in a conspiracy to provide material support to terrorists, as well as conspiracy to murder, kidnap, maim and injure persons abroad, the releases say.

Agents from the FBI and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and Quantico’s headquarters’ staff collaborated on an investigation that uncovered the alleged plot at the base.

“We have been in close coordination with NCIS and FBI agents and other officials throughout the Boyd investigation,” Quantico’s base commander Marine Col. Dan Choike said in a Marine Corps news release.

“We have ensured that the safety and protection of our Marines, their families and civilians who call Quantico home, received our first and absolute attention,” Choike said. “That attention in all matters continues to be our main focus.”

Others indicted in the alleged broader terrorism activities include:

— Anes Subasic, 33, a naturalized U.S. citizen;

— Mohammad Omar Aly Hassan, 22, a U.S. citizen; and

— Ziyad Yaghi, 21, a U.S. citizen.

All seven men are residents of North Carolina.

The defendants were arrested July 27 at various locations. All are being held without bond.

“These charges hammer home the point that terrorists and their supporters are not confined to the remote regions of some far-away land, but can grow and fester right here at home,” U.S. Attorney George E.B. Holding said in the Justice Department news release.
