Miami - The mayor of the western coastal city of Fort Myers, Florida fired city Administrator Scott Janke once it became known that the latter married a porn actress last year, The Miami Herald reported today.
Mayor Larry Kiker convened a hasty meeting with council members at City Hall on Tuesday evening once it became known that Janke had married a porn actress in October.
The Council voted 5-0 in favor of firing the city administrator.
The newspaper indicated that the Adult Industry News website recently reported that Janke's wife, Anabela Mota Janke, used the screen name Jazella Moore in the porn films she acted in.
"We keep our heads very high. We have nothing to be ashamed of, we have done nothing wrong," said the former administrator.
Janke commented that the mayor called him personally by telephone before the urgent meeting at City Hall but did not invite him to attend.
It is possible the former administrator will be indemnified with 6 months' worth of salary (around $50,000) and health-insurance benefits.
The mayor of Fort Myers acknowledged that Janke had broken no law and that he performed his administrator duties well at all times.
However, he pointed out that his concern as mayor was that Janke's remaining in the position could be negative to the community as it would detract from essential problems.

This dude makes $100,000 a year? Why, the hell? How do they come up these figures, anyway? Throw darts at a board?

I find it hard to believe that someone could be fired from a job (especially with government) based on who they married.

Well, this has “unlawful termination” lawsuit written all over it. Even in a “right-to-work” state (like I believe Florida is), this won’t be a tough civil suit to win.

Almost certainly none. But that doesn’t matter. He probably serves at the pleasure of the mayor. Or else there’s a morals clause in his contract.

When one considers the usual moral standard of your common polidiot, being a porn actress/actor is a definite step up.

Fort Myers has been trying to tame Spring Break for years and a City Manager with a porn star wife makes that difficult.
To: rrstar96
Yes she is not hard to find on the web! I was going to put up a link but it would be in bad taste.

Apparently to some people, otherwise why would they bother firing him?
To: edcoil
depends on how protected he is in the state code, but in many cases govt officials couldn’t be fired for this.

yah....perhaps, but you don’t get the outraged telephone calls and e-mails from constituents who voted for you. Try and put yourself in the shoes of one of these City Council Critters for a minute and then tell me what you would do when the phone started ringing in the middle of your dinner...
I can only imagine what a living hell these people’s lives must be, as this is one of those situations that no matter what you do, Bill O’Reilly, Whorealdo, FreeRepublic, Kos (et al) are going to be crawling right up your backside over this. If they didn’t fire this guy, you’d have Glenn Beck having another hysterical temper tantrum about it.
So it goes...

This is Fort Myers BEACH...NOT Fort Myers. FGS! They can’t even get the most simple fact right. Fort Myers BEACH is at least 15 miles away from downtown Fort Myers. Sheesh.
That being said, they’ve had about 5 different Administrators in so many years. Something is VERY wrong there to be sure.
To: Travis T. OJustice
“How would that apply?”
This was the stated rationale:
“[the mayor] pointed out that his concern as mayor was that Janke’s remaining in the position could be negative to the community as it would detract from essential problems.”
I’m guessing they’ll say the outrage or ridicule following from Janke’s marriage is just the sort of thing morals clauses are for.
To: rrstar96
I am a huge
prude when it comes to stuff like this (porn), but I think that it is wrong to fire this man for this reason. Unless something else was going on that was to the detriment of Ft. Myers, I think this administrator has one heck of a cause to sue. As a matter of fact, the man is probably a safer employee once the background of his wife is known because knowledge certainly removes any motive for blackmail.
Curiosity leads me to ask how this was discovered? Who on City Staff is perusing porn and recognized her?
To: Tublecane
They’ll get destroyed in court for that.

I agree, what's the point of marrying a porn "actress?"
I would fire him for stupidity and demonstrating a lack of judgment.

The administrator erred by marrying the woman. He should have been more clintoniean and offered the actress a position on his "staff."

If the city officials are Republicans, then their action fits the mainstream media's stereotype—but at least it isn't hypocritical relative to the usual political stances of Republicans. If they're Democrats, then the action is highly hypocritical—at least with respect to the standard political stances of Democrats (although that may not in fact apply to the actual people involved.)
Regardless, the firing is just wrong.
