LOS ANGELES - Gidget the Chihuahua, the bug-eyed, big-eared star of 1990s Taco Bell commercials who was a diva on and off the screen, has died. She was 15.
Gidget suffered a massive stroke late Tuesday night at her trainer's home in Santa Clarita and had to be euthanized, said Karin McElhatton, owner of Studio Animal Services in Castaic, which owned the dog.
Although she was hard of hearing, Gidget was otherwise in good health up to the day of her death, eating well and playing with her favorite squeaky toys at the home of trainer Sue Chipperton, McElhatton said.
"She was retired. She lived like a queen, very pampered," McElhatton said.

Look at how badly political correctness has become in just the last ten years. I seriously doubt anyone would have the guts to do a commercial like that today.
Pathetic, isn’t it?
Don’t these celebrity deaths come in threes? Who’s next?
What a laugh, the truth is that the commercial made people laugh, and made the image/stereotype more lovable in the hearts of all Americans.
It was the complaint that damaged the image of Hispanics in America. Americans HATE whiners.
Well, at least Gidget was one celebrity whose passing merits a bit of mourning:
She was a classy lady and a consummate professional who did her job and kept her private life private.
She was never busted for drugs or public drunkenness.
She never slutted around in public with every pretty-boy stud Rover, Fido or Rex in order to get cheap headlines and tawdry sexual thrills.
She kept silent on matters not related to her job, and never pretended to be an expert on politics, climate change, economics, homosexuality or even “animal rights”.
She never ridiculed or spoke disparagingly of others, no matter what her personal feelings might have been.
As regards those so-called Hispanic stereotypes, she epitomized and was an original “wise latina”, unlike that copycat pretender to the Supreme Court.
Let us all remember her fondly as one of those few in Hollywood worth remembering...
15 years is about max for a small dog. She had a long and pampered life. Much more so than most dogs. Adios Gidget! Via con dios!
BRAVO! TODAY’S WINNER !!!!
“The ads made the Taco Bell mascot wildly popular, although they provoked criticism from activists who accused them of promoting Hispanic stereotypes.”
What kind of accent did they think a Mexican dog would speak with?
Duke, the Bush's Baked Bean dog??? Hope not, those are some of my favorite TV ads...
I didn't care for them until we got our Heidi from a rescue shelter. She's a great dog and, when we're out with her, everyone tells us she looks like the Taco Bell dog.
Gidget will be laid to rest inside several crispy tacos with a side order of refried beans.
Gidget was a cutie. 15 is pretty good for a dog. Glad she had a long life.
