What do Reno, Orlando and Las Vegas have in common? To some pockets of the federal government, they just seem like too much fun.
Instead, employees at some big agencies, like the U.S. Department of Agriculture, are being encouraged to host meetings in more buttoned-down places such as St. Louis, Milwaukee or Denver.
Travel-industry lobbyists say government policies have essentially resulted in a blacklist of some destinations, such as Las Vegas, top, and Orlando, Fla., above, where Walt Disney World is located. ..When a conference planner for MGM Mirage's New York-New York Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas tried to book a conference with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, she received a polite refusal.

I'll see you next month Las Vegas! Viva! Viva!
yeah I’m not sure I’d put Vegas and Walt Disney World in the same category for the type of “fun” these govt people are looking for.
Thanks for visiting!
I hope you got a good deal...there’s lots of them out there right now.
The “boys” who support Dingy Harry in Vegas won’t likely be supporting him come re-election time. Reid’s Messiah has been bad for business in Vegas if you get the drift. Reid has big problems in Nevada including unhappy voters.
My favorite hotel/casino had layoffs last September. I was there in May, and it was so great that all of my favorite employees were still there, because they make it fun. I can't wait to see them again.
Hi, there!!!
Yes, indeed, there are many great deals.
Check it out everyone.
Is there any industry these morons can’t harm?
How about meeting AT HOME?
M-O-R-O-N-S!!!
I feel so very sorry for people in these industries.
That’s why the exist — for conventions/meetings.
And now we’re going to punish them?
S-T-U-P-I-D!!!
At least in Vegas, my hubby (the great GOP_Harley_Guy) can enjoy a cigar with his adult beverage with other like-minded adults.
Stay away from Milwaukee...we got enough government people here...and we prefer people thinking our town isn’t “fun”
That’s just a thrill, isn’t it?
Only kidding.
Yes, it does serve a purpose.
But my hubby (the great GOP_Harley_Guy) would love to see the Harley plant! LOL.
Every time I go to Vegas, I tell the locals that Harry Reid should be voted out of office. I make a point of it.
I believe it.
It breaks my heart when I see news articles such as this about Vegas. I just keep thinking about my favorite employees there and hope that they still have their jobs.
We need the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to get you on the payroll.
Yep, for the most part Vegas remains a last bastion of freedom.
It’s tough times right now, but not so much people aren’t coming...they are. The strip just got too leveraged and now is struggling with the lower room rates and less spending by tourists.
Anyway, have fun!
OUTSTANDING idea there, KarlInOhio!
City Center is a massive project that will completed at the end of this year. They are hiring 12K workers. Unforunately, 8,500 construction workers will lose their jobs and there isn’t anywhere for them to go. The concern is that the new influx of rooms will put pressure on the rest of the strip and cause more stress. We’ll see.
You won’t see much construction in Vegas for some time. What you will see is lower costs and a return to what Vegas used to be...a low cost, high value destination for your vacation dollar.
Tell him to hurry all we may have soon is the museum...
I have attended a conference for the last two years in Orlando that is sponsored by a .gov agency. I have found the conference meetings to be very helpful to my job and the accomodations (Marriott) are very nice. However, the same conference could be moved to LV and easily halve the hotel room nightly cost when compared to Orlando. I also expect the airfare could be cheaper.
The bottom line cost should be driving this, not “appearances”. If a decision has been made that a conference would have value, then present the conference at a place where the value is enhanced by reasonable costs for hotel, food, and airfare.
BTW, in the years prior to my going to this conference, I am told it was held in prime places like Toledo, OH. Personally, I have my doubts about the value of returning to such garden spots just to keep up “appearances”. I guess this also explains why there was not an announcement at the end of this year’s conference about returning to Orlando.
You wouldn't believe the number of people that I work with who go to Vegas. They know I love it, and they come up to me and say, “I'm going to Vegas!”
One lady with whom I work with asked me why I love Vegas. I told her “It's the people you meet,” which is true, but she really wouldn't understand my real reason — FREEDOM and being around happy people because of it. :-)
Toledo? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL.
Indeed, Vegas is one of the CHEAPEST places to have meetings/conventions.
I can fly non-stop, round-trip from Cleveland for around $200.
Actually, Las Vegas, in some ways, is most affordable for these conventions... the range of prices for food is from cheap to WOW...... and rooms are still very affordable — probably less than SS Administration paid for the Phoenix Biltmore.
The big casinos in Reno - Atlantis and Peppermill have been holding their own....cut a few hours but no big layoffs. Atlantis seems to be paying off more jackpots(they have a casino wide jackpot that goes up to $50,000 that can go off anytime, anywhere, any machine...it paid off 3 times last month!). Because of all the jackpots and payoffs...they draw more of a crowd. I won $2500 on the Wicked Winnings II penny slot last month! ;) They also have a Reno exclusive contract with a couple of the slot companies so they get all the newest and latest games before anyone else in town! (Smart!!)
I cannot get over the fact that more and more casinos/hotels are being built....it is stupefying!!!
Maybe they will have finally learned something!
Yup, seems the libs are trying to kill the Vegas economy. Seems they also hate gambling now from what I have been seeing online.. its now “Selfish and greedy” according to them
Idiots.
It’s the non-selfish and non-greedy people like me and others who are ensuring their jobs.
You’ve got that right, Arizona Carolyn.
The people in Las Vegas have every right to sue not the government but those in authority in the govt. under the equal protection clause.
the mandates by the govt have the effect of going against the US Constitution by punishing the way they gain renumeration, although their gainful employment is 100% legal.
Re: “Yup, seems the libs are trying to kill the Vegas economy. Seems they also hate gambling now from what I have been seeing online.. its now Selfish and greedy according to them”
*********
Well, it appears some of the idiot libs didn’t get the memo to stay away because a few I know just returned from a week there — on their own dimes. I hope they spent a LOT of money in L.V.
Thanks for the info, BossLady.
I’ve never been to Reno, but have had offers.
At my favorite casino in Vegas, they reduced the hours of the floor beverage servers from 8 to 6 per day and are having them cover more of the floor. They’re working even harder now.
I figure he doesn’t give a rats behind. He is bigger than his state. He’s a lifetime congress critter!
I play later at night and I bring my own beverage since there is about 3 servers for a huge casino like the Atlantis! LOL!
