Aim higher than rap or basketball, Obama urges young blacks

The 45-minute address was Mr Obama?s first big speech on race since he was forced to tackle the issue head on during his presidential campaign last year

James Bone.

In his first big speech on race since winning the White House, President Obama has exhorted young blacks to aspire to be more than basketballers and rap music stars.

In a historic address, America’s first black president told the country’s oldest civil rights group, celebrating its 100th anniversary, that it was time for “a new mindset” that did not internalise a sense of limitation.

He told a rapturous audience of 5,000 members of the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People (NAACP) that the “pain of discrimination” was still felt in America but that black parents should teach their children that there were “no excuses” for underachieving.

“I believe that overall there probably has never been less discrimination in America than there is today,” he said.

Adopting the impassioned style of a black preacher, Mr Obama urged black children to embrace role models other than the basketball star LeBron James or the rapper Lil Wayne.

“They might think they’ve got a pretty good jump shot or a pretty good flow, but our kids can’t all aspire to be LeBron or Lil Wayne,” he said to applause. “I want them aspiring to be scientists and engineers, doctors and teachers — not just ballers and rappers. I want them aspiring to be a Supreme Court Justice. I want them aspiring to be the President of the United States of America.”

I remember when there was an outcry because of what Bill Cosby said. All I hear after this speech from Obama is crickets.

Only a "big speech"?

What......not "landmark"? or milestone? or even "major" speech?

Hussein truly is slipping in the eyes of the slobbering media.

I think the fact that there is a black president proves that there is nothing holding anyone back, from achieving what ever they want to achieve.

The fact that we have a black president also shows that there are not critical masses of voters who would never vote for a minority president.

The affirmative action crowd keeps telling us that blacks and other minorities continue to be hobbled by the vestiges of past discrimination.

The affirmative action crowd also tells us that America is a racist, bigoted society, which has never really moved past the discrimination of the past.

Well, we now see that there are no barriers to minorities achievement in the political world. That glass ceiling is shattered.

We see that there are no barriers to minority achievement in the business world. Or in the educational world, or any level of government service.

Do the NAACP and other organizations think it is still 1950? Some of the organizations most resistent to change are those who have promoted change. The NAACP has seen numerous favorable changes come about. Yet they still seem stuck in a mindset that, whatever has happened, whether living conditions are better for black people in the year 2009 than ever before, that it isn’t enough.

Aim higher for what? You can't start a business and have employees without being a slave to government and giving away half your money to losers. The small window of real opportunity has passed...you made sure of that.

Government has always been the problem Obama. Your commie cohorts have sold you down the river. None of us are free to aim higher now because of you.

Discrimination is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Once you’ve made up your mind to be a victim, eventually victimhood will find you, one way or another. To say that “we’re still victims of discrimination” is to ensure that the same pathetic cycles play out for generations to come. Stop the madness!

Rap and basketball are also entrepreneurial achievements. There's nothing wrong with neither endeavors.

Of course, both professions offer multi-million dollar salaries, so Obama is opposed to them.

From the article responses:

"each time he speaks I seem to admire him a little bit more. With his chipless shoulder, and his can-do philosophy, he is an authentic voice of hope and inspiration for the US and the wider world"

Some people apparently have not noticed the enormous chip on Zero's shoulder.

They are too enthralled with "The One's" celebrity to see beyond the words and photo op's.

For a second there, I thought Obama was actually saying something positive about America but when he waves the old discrimination flag at a Black audience it signals that their failures are 'society's' fault, even as he says otherwise.

Some things never change, especially Marxist politicians and Black race hustlers using Black victimhood and White guilt to blame others for Black failures; a 70% illegitimacy rate, very high high school drop-out rate, disproportionate prison incarceration rate, etc. while pretending to encourage young Black citizens.

Bill Cosby said it much better - and without the caveats and built-in excuses. Cos emphasized that Black people are going to have to stop blaming 'Whitey' for their failures and start taking on personal responsibility. I seriously doubt this is what Alinsky disciple Barack Hussein Obama really wants.

"“I believe that overall there probably has never been less discrimination in America than there is today,” he said. "

The sitting president of the United States said that...so much for race relations. So much for a color blind society.

He is letting us know his presidency is about race...and money. Nothing more.

Divide and conquer is the mantra of commiebama. So long as he can keep the ACORN mindset alive, he thinks he is assured the office.

But, his statement is probably right on...if you look at total "discrimination", which includes mostly so-called "reverse discrimination". There are a lot more blacks out there who hate "whitey", than the other way around.

This man is not a man of peace, and he has none, nada, zero, nicht, zilch leadership skills. He is letting out all of the stops at his disposal to break this country into little, tiny pieces, and is using...yes USING the blacks to achieve his goal of supremacy. Little do they know, once he gets there and doesn't need them anymore, his commie side will come out...and they will be no more important than any of the rest of us. They are his useful idiots.

Aim higher kids.

If Obama can be President without anyone seeing his Birth Certificate, seeing his grades or seeing his College transcripts, you can do it too.

In fact, you can do Cocaine just like Obama said he did, but stay away from that Crack. If you're a drug dealer like Obama was, be sure you only spend the money you make on more drugs or your Tuition. Don't be going out there and buying a gun.

Or Murder a cop, go to deathrow, get your own radio show, become a celebrity to all the Hollywood libs and give a taped commencement speech to a Ivory league college.
